Pretty depressing
Stayed two nights last week. Room 101 (really??). I thought thick grain veneer went out with the 80's but the wardrobe and desk, headboard / bedside furniture were all covered in the stuff. Carpet badly stained, wall paper as you enter heavily stained. Ironing board left out in the middle of the room. No view. Tiny TV which makes annoying low level noised as it needs to be plugged into a digital box now. Thick duvet on the bed which was way too hot for the weather. There was a blanket in the wardrobe but no sheet to form a barrier so I assumed it's for when it gets so cold that a duvet needs to supplemented rather than for warmer weather. Constant sound of water dripping into a cistern. I could go on into the bathroom but you get the picture that it's all depressingly passable. Breakfast is the usual stuff which they charge an extra tenner for. From the dining area you can see unused mattresses and divans strewn around the next room. The public areas are less tatty but look again like a blast from the 80's. I understand it's quite cheap for a city centre hotel with free parking (the castle is virtually across the road) and the owners obviously don't see the point of investing into an update and charging more after. I hope not to have the misfortune of having to stay there again.

Requires a truckload of investment
I stayed here for two days recently on business and I can report the following:Check in - speedy, efficientFloorboards - as you would expect in a 500 year old buildingDecor - decaying 1930's grandeurRoom - very very bijou for a double roomBath - CrimeanShower - lowWalls - paperWallpaper - hystericalBed - cleanBreakfast - functional (the chef has clearly taken a view on the two words 'Hash brown" and decided that the key word is very much the latter)TV - historic (seriously, you could sort this out very quickly and at minimal cost)Tariff - highly agressiveGuests - livelyStaff - polite and looking a tad embarrassedTrouser press - 5 series Corby (good for paninis)Desktop space - non existantWindows - elderly and incontinentLocation - impressiveRestaurant - closedNoise levels - see walls and floorboardsWiring - hurriedTemperature - variable (see windows)Complimentary drinks tray - substantial and refuelled dailyTowels - plentifulChecking out - see checking inOverall, you really do get what you pay for and I didn't pay a great deal (¿¿110 for two nights including breakfast). You would need to spend a fortune on the place to bring it up to scratch but, bearing in mind the location, you would see an impressive ROI in the fullness of time.

Great staff and a superb location
The staff here are an asset to the hotel. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful. I came to Warwick so that I could compete at a swimming competition at Leamington. I would recommend this hotel to anyone swimming at Leamington next year. My room was spacious but in need of some refurbishment. The bed was hard but surprisingly comfortable. I got a good nights sleep on both nights. Much better than when I've stayed in very stuffy Travel Lodge / Holiday Inn type hotels. The room was clean except for the window frames and a teaspoon. The shower is definitely in need of replacement. As swimming at 9am I was disappointed that I could not have a cooked breakfast as at weekends cooked breakfasts start at 8am. Sarah and Jason though were superb letting me have a continental style breakfast at 6.30am allowing food to be digested before the swim. The hotel has character. It is right in the town centre of Warwick which is a wonderful place to visit. The Roebuck was my favourite pub ! I would definitely stay at the Lord Leycester again.

Superb value-for-money
We spent 4 nights at the Lord Leycester recently, for only ¿¿40 per night, two people including an full breakfast. The hotel is old (that's part of its attraction), and consequently not in the best condition (e.g. our windows didn't open properly, and many rooms would be inaccessible for the disabled), but the staff are very helpful, and with the excellent, you will not get better value-for-money.

Not as bad as people say
I stayed with my girlfriend for 3 days in mid April 2013. Whilst I agree that the floorboards are incredibly squeaky and the music from the wedding party on the Saturday night was a tad loud (But over by Midnight :) ) We thouroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel is in an excellent location a few minutes from the town and castle. If you are looking for top quality accommodation or a honeymoon it might not be the best choice but for me and my partner in our early 20's on foot of the job ladder incomes it was just perfect. The Breakfast was particularly good and the staff friendly.
