Pleasant 3 nights
We had read many of the review of this hotel and so when we went away a few days ago - we were expecting the worst!Was pleasantly surprised upon arrival - the staff are helpful e.g. recommended places to eat nearby and the doorman moved our car into the hotel car park himself.The location is perfect - very close to the river yet a 10min walk away from the city centre itself. Plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance. I think this is the main factor that contributed to us having such a lovely stay.The room we stayed in was large and although slightly dated, wasn't particularly bad. The reception, bar and restaurant areas are very nicely decorated and cosy.The breakfast choice was good and the hot drinks and toast - very generous helpings!A minor niggle - we were in the room when the cleaner wanted to come in and unfortunately she didn't return to clean the room later on in the morning. Would recommend going to:- Bamburugh Castle- The Strand Comedy Club- Newcastle City Centre and The Metro Centre (if you like LOTS of shopping!)- Walking along the river and over the Millenium Bridge

Two nights to visit the Sage
Close to city centre and the Tyne - The Sage is just across the river. However the hotel is certainly showing signs of tiredness - certainly the room we were in. The room was small, dark and claustrophobic - the view was only available if you stood at the window. The television was old fashioned, the TV control did not work, choice of channels limited and some missing in any event - and please note the local BBC region is North East and not East! Our reception was abysmal, the service at breakfast was equally poor and the choice was poor. What we had was OK. Positive were free wifi and the bed was comfortable. Parking was free and very close (out front or in car park a few yards away. Redwood bar comfortable and reasonable.

Fantastic staff and beautiful bar but outdated rooms
I last stayed in this hotel over 10 years ago and sadly the rooms and corridors haven't been decorated since! They are really tired, the art work very 80's, the TV's ancient and furniture battered. More positively, the hotel is in a great central location. The staff are lovely and room service excellent. The newly refurbished bar is fabulous and the wifi works well.

Central Location
We recently stayed at the Vermont for our son's wedding. The hotel provided first class arrangements for the wedding and the staff went out of their way to make their special day a first class experience. We understand that hotel is under new ownership and is is the course of refurbishment. The Heritage Suite used for the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception was a wood panelled room with leaded windows - an impressive venue. The hotel is situated in an impressive location adjacent to the castle and it is recommended that, when booking, you ask for a room facing the Tyne bridges as the rear rooms face the main railway line through Newcastle.

In desperate need of renovation
It looks so beautiful from the outside, and it used to have such a grand reputation in newcastle so I was really looking forward to staying there. Maybe it was these expectations that made it a disappointment. The reception and bar were nice enough, but for what you pay for a room, it was tiny and just outdated and a bit shabby. There's much more competition in town as there's more hotels now, it needs some investment to keep up
