Not what we expect from a 4-star hotel
Located in walking distance of port and shops, but in an area that becomes unsavoury after 6pm. Shower (1/2 open) flooded bathroom floor. Hotel under renovation, ceiling tiles in reception loose/missing. Bar unfriendly, fluorescent green/white, BRIGHTLY lit, plastic chairs. TV in adjacent room (dining overflow) with 8 comfortable chairs and the rest hard cafe chairs + tables/high stools. Not for relaxing. Bar was closed before scheduled. We attended an event with more than 200 delegates.. Room servicing friendly but sloppy (shortage of towels or cups.) Beds rock hard - we did not sleep well at all. 1 chair, 1 small bench/foot stool, 1 bedside table next to 1 bed, for 2 guests. To buy water etc. we had to queue at busy reception.

Bad news!
Stayed there for 3 nights this week and found it a poor performance. - very low water pressure on the 12th floor- incident with no hot water anymore- incident with the reserved parking ( could not get to my car anymore )- power loss on 220 volt for an hour plusHotel is under reconstruction at the moment, that shows.Good news: the logistics team for the conference was very helpfull

Okay hotel, bad area
I stayed in the Mercure for a business conference. It didn't get off to the best start - I arrived 50 minutes before check-in and was rudely informed there were no rooms ready (I found that hard to believe), the staff were not helpful in suggesting anywhere I could sit and wait (I wanted to sit outside). When I returned to check-in the staff were slightly more friendly and were okay for the rest of the stay, but not what you expect from staff at a conference hotel. The area is rough - turning right out of the hotel is not a good idea (a colleague nearly had his watch taken off his arm), turning left gets you to the Marina in a couple of minutes if you can navigate the dog-poo lined streets. Generally I wouldn't recommend Marseille for a break at all - but back to the hotel... the room was nice, always clean with a good sized bathroom (for the people who have said on here that the shower is waist height, there is a 'waterfall' shower in the ceiling, you need to flick the tap switch to activate this!). There was a good range of food at breakfast and the lunch time meals I ate as part of the conference were of a high quality, so I imagine all food is good there. The hotel didn't wow, but it was fine - there was nothing fundamentally wrong with it.

not a 4 star hotel. only one set of bathroom towels. espresso not working. small rooms. very poor breakfast. good position. large publicparking under the hotel. also some shops. easy to reach vieux port

General information lacking
The front desk staff were friendly although trying to get accurate and helpful information from them on the local train and bus systems was like extracting blood from a stone. We were advised to get a bus to Cassis until I asked the staff member how she would get there to which she replied that she would travel by train. We were also incorrectly advised that the buses from the train station to the airport would take 90 minutes. Fortunately, concierge at the Sofitel was excellent and provided thorough detail on how to get there - pay the extra and stay there - their pool and terrace overlooking the harbour is great and service awesome.Breakfast was nice and rooms were clean although I have no idea why this is a 4 star hotel
