great place to stay
I stayed for 3 nights and really enjoyed it.Right in the heart of the city in the old town.Good restaurants nearby and some fantastic vintage shops too.The Sandy Bells pub is an experience not to be missed, live folk music , just the place to try famous malts and whiskies.

Anniversary Celebration Visit
Initially made advance booking (to save money) mid-march but had to postpone due to family problems. Hotel booking service very helpful in making a later booking for minimum additional cost. Stayed in a second floor suite with great view of castle. Room was large and very well appointed (with two large TVs, one of which was HD). Wife loved the large walk-in shower and coffee maker. Room clean, modern, and well maintained. Good location for castle, royal mile and gardens, etc. Easy walking distance from rail station, but route can be just a little bit confusing. Very good choice of breakfast which caters for most tastes, and is of excellent quality. Staff were great, very friendly, going out of their way to ensure we really enjoyed our visit. Would go there again.

It's Gone Downhill a Bit
We stayed at this hotel back in 2008 and loved it so we were excited to return. Unfortunately, it's not as great as we remember it being. I think it just comes with the average wear and tear of a hotel, really. We had a big crack in the ceiling, the grout in the bathroom looked dirty but I think it was just old, the shower glass was spotted, etc. It wasn't bad, but it's not the 4-5 rating I would have given it a few years ago. We had a very comfortable night's rest - the beds are comfortable and it's actually very quiet considering we were in Grassmarket on a weekend. I'd stay there again, I'm just not in love with it anymore.

Good hotel let down by spa
I stayed at this hotel for one night on business.The City Hotel was fine, although a bit further from the city centre than I would have liked.The staff at reception and in the restaurant were friendly and efficient, and the bedroom was clean and tidy.However, one of the reasons I chose this hotel was that I could use the pool and spa at the sister hotel, The Apex International, about 100 yards away. This was a let down:- The sauna (for some strange reason called the 'tropicarium'!) wasn't working.- The hair dryer didn't work.- The shower was only giving out hot water. When I tried to adjust the temperature the control knob fell off!Apart from that I had a good nights sleep which is what really mattered to me.

Lovely!!
I am actually travelling home just now from staying in the apex for 2 nights. It was very cosy and pleasant! The beds are so comfy, large tv! Lovely bathroom area with separate shower. Plenty of wardrobe space too. The hotel is central to most places we were only a 10 minute walk to the city centre and plenty of pubs and restaurants near by too. It was lovely and would definitely recommend to a friend! I would say the only downfall would be not having a little mini fridge in the room as I like to drink alot of water and don't particularly like warm water but there was a shop across from the hotel so I jut had to buy bags of ice to use until it melted.
