Good...but
This hotel is very good in the way of good bedding and bathroom.good size rooms with a couch.the only thing I struggle with is the airconditioning. There is none!!! I do not understand how a hotel can not be aircondtioned.we found the room very warm,we do ask and recieved a small desk fan,so we managed to sleep.I would probably not come back because of that

Very good family hotel
This hotel is very close and convenient to the castle, and the south side shops. It is off the main street so it nice and quiet. For kids, this is great. It was also one of the few hotels where our young kids (5 & 8) could stay in the same room. The heated pool is wonderful, and a great way to relax and wind down the kids at the end of the day. If you are looking to shop along Princes street, it can be a bit of a hike. Also, there were a great many tours that used the hotel, so in the morning the breakfast service was overwhelmed, and many times coffee or porridge had to be asked for twice before they were actually brought to us.

Overpriced and dirty
I have stayed in many hotels including Novotel hotels all over the world and I have to say this hotel is nowhere near a 4stars hotel they claim it is.Poor decor, air conditioning in the room was not working, telephone in the room was not working, the glasses and the cups had lips marks on them. Breakfast was really poor. This is the worst Novotel I have ever stayed. Nothing compare to the Cardiff Novotel for example. The pool was really really small and as you come in and wait to be checked in at the reception, the whole groups floor smells of chemicals that they put in the swimming pool. The restaurant at the hotel was also overpriced. Bad quality of food as well. You can have a much better dinner elsewhere at the city centre (e.g.the Dome) and in a way better environment. The only positive is the location ( close to my conference centre and the city centre as well).I do not recommend this hotel at all.For 150-170 a night for a basic room! The travelodge next door is half price and I am sure is no worse that this "4-star" Novotel!

Great family base for exploring the city.
Stayed for a weekend with our 2 girls and found this an excellent base. Particularly good for the old town. Pool is a real bonus and the bus stop outside makes it very convenient for heading out to Leith or returning to the airport. You can walk easily here from the station in 20 minutes although some of it is uphill. Rooms are clean and family rooms spacious. Breakfast is buffet style but plentiful and there wasn't the stampede like you get in the premier inn next door. Catch the number 23 bus if you want to bus it from the station or the number 35 from the airport. Kids play area for toddlers and pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and gym all inclusive. Didn't use the bar or restaurant apart from breakfast.

Good rooms - and kudos for a sensible walk-up price!
Was booked in here in late April 2013 for a night before a business meeting.Unfortunately, despite being assured a room had been booked for me, I arrived at around 8pm to find that the hotel had no record of my stay. Not having time to source alternative accommodation, I bit the bullet and asked if any rooms were available on the spot. "No problem sir!"And the rate for room and full breakfast was - ¿¿99 inc. VAT.This was an EXCELLENT rate for the centre of Edinburgh without booking - top marks to Novotel for not taking the mick like several other Edinburgh establishments whose on-the-spot rates can be double or even triple that of just a few days in advance. Good show!Room itself was very comfortable; one curious quirk is that the toilet is entirely separate to the bathroom; being in a cubicle by the door, wheres the bathroom is beside the bed area. Definitely a positive touch and added to the feeling of increased space. The bathroom had an entirely separate bath and enclosed shower - again, a nice touch, setting it above the more ubiquitous "shower over bath" of, for example, most Premier Inns. Bed was a proper 5-foot (King) with a mattress at the upper end of "firm". This is exactly how I like them and I would say more common in newer hotels such as this. If you happen to prefer a really soft, saggy mattress - this may not be your place!Sound insulation was adequate; the south of the hotel where my room was is over Lauriston Place which is a busy thoroughfare (though no fast traffic!) - but I got a great nights sleep and found noise to be at a minimum.Breakfast was definitely a cut above average - extensive hot and cold buffet at least on a par with the smaller Holiday Inn / Hilton type establishments - a sensible amount of choice and a very good turnover - no hot items sitting baking under lamps for 30+ minutes.Plenty scope for evening eating here too, within a few minutes walk - Tollcross is just down the hill - using "Near me now" on the Tripadvisor phone app is handy here; found a high-rated Indian under 10 minutes walk away which didn't disappoint. So - a great option for central Edinburgh - I walked there & back from Waverley station; it took around 15 minutes each way - but if you had luggage I'd recommend a cab - especially from the station up The Mound. Haymarket is probably slightly closer, but more to see if you travel from Waverley. In summary - a short stay, but definitely sweet. I shall return!
