A dream come true!
This is the very best hotel in which I have ever stayed! I am on holiday with my sister, and we are staying at the Scotsman for one week. Our room is absolutely lovely, and the view from our Windows is absolutely stunning!! The staff goes above and beyond to help us. They are friendly and sincere, so I do not think twice about asking for assistance. They have called taxis for us (since we have health problems), walked us to the taxi, booked tours and shows for us, and even asked how if we enjoyed our outings! Housekeeping is amazing, and even gave us extra shortbread when we requested it! I will absolutely stay here again if I have the chance!! Love it! Love it! Love it!!!

A for effort
The hotel staff was generally friendly, and our room was nice with great views. But it is not as nice an experience overall as we had at The Balmoral just a block away; the Scotsman's layout is a bit byzantine and rather like a rabbit warren if trying to get, for example, from your room to the spa (gym). And it lacks five-star professional service, e.g. they cannot easily hail taxis for you or help with bags curbside because their entrance is set back quite a ways from the street so there is no doorman on duty; the same person acts as doorman/greeter/concierge. The staff tries to be helpful in securing reservations but the effect overall is not as professional The housekeeping was intrusive (moving items around randomly, not logically) and not commensurate with top hotels - although everything was clean, comfortable and functional.

I wouldn't recommend this hotel to others.
Good location, gym and rooms. The problem is the noise and the hot rooms. Whatever you do, do not get a room on the Fleshmarket Close side of the hotel. There are a number of pubs right outside the hotel windows and a hostel nearby. We spent two sleepless nights as a stream of screaming, singing drunks paraded through each night until 3:30 in the morning. (Despite having a room on the 6th floor and wearing ear plugs!). We moved our room and got just as much noise. Friends who stayed on the 7th floor were also awakened. Also, we had a leaking sink and rooms not made up until after 3 pm. We won't be back.

Great Position BUT....
Great position, central to the Castle, the Royal Mile, numerous shops, railway station etcThe spa in the basement of the hotel is very well done,w tih a 20 m swimming pool, and new gym.Staff a re friendly, helpful and courteous.However, there is an issue about air conditioning. We visited in May, weather was warm. Room had a good view, spacious, however the air-conditioning was absent. Bed only had a Doonah, should have had a sheet as well. One had to open the window to get a cool breeze (hopefully)...however to do this required you to have the curtins open, which meant sunlight beamed into your bedroom at 4.30 am. Make your choice of what you like, but in our circumstances we could not seem to get away from sleep deprivation.This is not good for great travel.In addition do not use the phone under any circumstance. A UK call of 5-10 mins cost us 34 Pounds, which was ludicrous, but they would not change. Just read the fine print, and above all do not use the hotel phone.Breakfast excellent, but up there in terms of price,But great location, pity about the air-conditioning / light in summer...or hot days

Gorgeous hotel in the middle of Old Town
We loved our stay at the Scotsman. It is a beautiful, stately hotel with friendly and professional staff, and lovely rooms with everything you could ever think you'd need. The room was a good size, with the bathroom particularly luxurious. The bed was comfortable, and we were okay if we used both pillows. We had a lovely view from our bay window.We'd like to commend Roy, the concierge on duty during most of our stay, who not only pointed out things that might be of interest during our stay in Edinburgh and dealt with our overly warm room promptly, but also got us a great deal on a hire car at the last minute. Thank you!!We felt right at home at the Scotsman and can't recommend it more highly.
