Well what can I say we arrived on a rainy day to this beautiful city which we fell in love with the history of this place. after a day of driving around and seeing the sights a bus tour and a look inside all the places of interest we found ourselves walking around the crescent and enjoing the beautiful view of the city. Trying to find somewhere to stay last minute we stumbled accross the royal crecsent and walked in to our surprise to the most beautiful secret garden in the middle of the handsome hotel. The rooms were beautiful and peaceful and true English style. We loved every second of our stay.

Shabby...
We arrived at a deserted reception and eventually wandered out through the grounds to find any sign I life. A kind waiter walked us to an unusual reception (?) area. We stood in a small 1970s like office, which we believed to be reception as nothing was marked, we were left guessing and in an very awkward position. We were walked to a room that bore no resemblance to the room we booked as advertised on the website. The room was small and boxlike with a heavily stained sofa taking pride of place in the center. A cupboard sized bedroom was adjacent that was completely consumed by a double bed. We rang for a clerk who assured us that although it was a suite it was not the garden suite we booked. This was evident from the fact that it looked out on to the road but the clerk maintained that the term 'garden suite' and photos there of, that we based our booking upon were no more than (representative) of the kind if suite we might get. He agreed to move us to an alternative 'suite' which was better, but still shabby and fell so short of our expectations. I believe this hotel has a five star status, which quite honestly is farcical. Our room was ¿¿540 for the night and the overall experience fell short of a typical ¿¿200 hotel in London.

Five stars??? Well don't really know!!
When you watch Dacning On Ice and they only mark out of six and then give the first one up a five you kinda think they should hold something in reserve, and I guess I am guilty of doing this when it comes to marking hotels, as I have given hotels offering much less than this the same, or a higher mark. Or maybe I am not guilty.....read on....When you mark something out of five you are not left with a lot of room to mark up or down, so I will give this hotel 83 out of 100, which places it right where I want it.My first problem when marking it is I did not pay for it, my wife did, so I have no idea of the actual price she paid, but I am assured it was a lot....and I am sure that is the case.Lets look at the good stuff....We stayed in a front facing "Superior" room on the second floor, room 14 as I recall, it was very spacious, had a nice bathroom, air-con, massive bed, chairs, TV, DVD and many period features. Very nice, and the view was to die for.....almost worth the money for that alone.Lets look at the bad stuff....Room was a bit tired, wall coverings a bit shabby, bathroom OK but taps would not turn off so dripped all the time, cracked tiles on the floor, the lighting in the room was such that you could not get a decent light to read the paper by no matter where you sat, the window opened all of four inches (to stop me throwing myself out I guess....I keep trying you know....) so it was a bit stuffy.Lets look at the excellent stuff...Room service, we stayed two nights and they CHANGED our bed, newspapers to the door each morning, a bed turn-down service, charming door staff, (and reception staff). You are shown in to an "anti-room" to check in, cases vanish only to re-appear in your room.....it's all top dollar. We did not eat AT ALL in the hotel, no reason but my wife elected for room only as she does not eat breakfast and it was ¿¿20 per head each. Its good, it's a once in a lifetime place to stay, but my room at the Mercure in Bristol was nicer....and half the price, but offered a view of offices...and there is the rub. You get what you pay for, but sometimes not all of it is tangible.

Outstanding location let down by maintainence
My husband and I were booked in for a one night stay to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Upon arrival the doormen were wonderful for taking our luggage and the car. We were shown to our room and informed we had a free upgrade from the classic suite I had booked to a deluxe suite, this was a nice touch. The room, however, was a bit of a disappointment. Stunning view over the crescent, but shabby inside. The carpet was stained and thread bare, there was dust over every surface, everything rattled when you moved around, all the upholstrey had holes. The bathroom was fairly small, with a loud knocking tap, a bulb missing and no extractor fan. Having said that, the four poster bed, although very high off the ground was incredibly comfortable, the curtains were excellent at keeping the light out and the room blissfully peaceful. We took afternoon drinks in the garden which was lovely, sheltered location and the barman welcoming.Breakfast was lovely, certainly the best poached eggs I have ever had, which made for a fantastic eggs benedict. Overall this hotel is in a lovely location, but the interior really doesn't make it worth the huge cost of the room. If we were visiting Bath again, I am sure that I could find a hotel offering better value.

royal crescent hotel bath
We stayed at the Royal Crescent Hotel in Bath for a two night weekend break in late April 2013 and i have to say i could not find one fault, drawback or detrimental side to it. The hotel will shortly be undergoing a make over i believe to polish it and take it on to a new level. I was assured that it will keep its regency feel and hope that it will. You have to understand that whatever they do, the hotel will still be two joined houses on the royal crescent, built in the mid 1700's. As you would expect, the ceilings are soaring, the decor is true to the period and the fireplaces are all open. The staff were superb and do true justice to a Relais and Chateaux establishment. The Spa is superb, accesible and very relaxed, as are the treatments. They give you fantastic direction to the hotel from whatever directions you come from and they whisk your car away to leave you one less hassle. The concierge is amazing and will help you with anything you need and while we ate dinner out in Bath, we did have breakfast in the hotel and it was superb. Yes it is expensive to stay here but really got full value from a historic, centrally located, slick professional and serene hotel. We will definately return.
