Very posh but affordable
I booked this hotel thru Priceline by picking 3 1/2 stars and downtown area. I knew there were only 3 hotels in the downtown area. I paid $85 which was supposed to be 53% off.It is right downtown, about 3 miles from Mercy hospital where I have family in ICU.Since it is downtown you have to pay for parking. The hotel offers valet for $16 a day, and there is a city ramp is $11 a day(right next door). This is a remodeled historic hotel. I didn't use any of the services. The beds were GREAT. The bathroom small but adequate. The staff even comes out from behind the desk to great you and to say goodbye.Oh yea, and mints on the turned down bed.

Great Hotel
I am from Iowa and stay in the Renaissance Savery Hotel every time I'm in Des Moines. The staff is always attentive, the restaurant is always great (with good drinks at the bar as well), the rooms are nice and large with comfortable beds. The bathrooms are a bit small but I've stayed in rooms that have come with two bathrooms! It's centrally located with great views and I would highly recommend the hotel!

Unique property, good stay, but some misses
My family chose the Renaissance Savery for a stay in Des Moines for my son's wedding. The hotel is conveniently located near the river and Des Moines is a wonderful city for walking around and exploring. The hotel has posters all over with information about its history. Even in our bathroom there was a note that when the Savery was built, a private bathroom was a luxury in a hotel, and that this bath was the original dimensions. Yes, it was small , but modern and well laid-out. Wi-Fi was free (I have Silver status) and easy to use. The wait staff in the hotel and coffee shop were friendly and attentive. We had dinner there Saturday night (nearly everything else was booked due to a major event) and the waitress was constantly checking in the status of our food and keeping us informed; one dish arrived late and she said they wouldn't charge for it- without being asked. The food was fine and reasonably priced. I do wish the coffee shop had something to eat other than a couple of choices of breads and rolls; I had a couple of very hectic days and didn't want to bother with the sit-down restaurant at breakfast so I skipped it entirely. Fitness center was in the basement and windowless but large and well-equipped with up-to-date equipment. Pool was really too small for swimming laps and closed when we were there. I didn't find the Services Directory till the second day; I was looking for the typical large binder and it looks more like a glossy brochure but has all the essential information including TV channels. Parking in the nearby garage was easy and inexpensive. Not sure how it would be during the work week, though. The big miss: just before the wedding, my mother, sister and I were in a frenzy of completing 8 bouquets, 12 boutonnieres and 4 corsages. We finished an hour before the ceremony, rushed into our Sunday Best, and left the room a bit cluttered. OK, I'll admit that. We had no time to pick things up. The cleaning staff used this as an excuse not to do anything to the main living area. The bed was not made, the used towel was not taken off the bed, and it was left exactly as it was when we rushed out. They did replace toiletries and towels in the bath, but I felt they could have done more to straighten things up.Overall, we liked the Savery but will probably choose the Embassy Suites, our usual destination in Des Moines, for its larger rooms next time.

Big rooms, but needs work
I stayed here for a hybrid work/fun trip, and was disappointed considering that this is a Renaissance property. There's not enough staff. I had to go looking for a valet when I arrived to park my car. The cable and internet service is awful, which is a problem for business travelers. The toilet and sink were super loud, which woke me up when my friend needed to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. I also came back to my room once to find my bed unmade, though my friend's was made. The location and room size are good, but otherwise this property needs work.

Small rooms = average accommodation
My room at the Renaissance Savery in Des Moines, IA bears more than a passing resemblance to a postage stamp. Even the full-size (double) bed seems oversize in this room. A low ceiling in a very tiny bathroom lends to a claustrophobic sense. Most annoying of all is a clothes closet that is only about 8" deep, meaning that all the hangers need to be angled, you can fit very little, and it's difficult to get your clothes in or out. The toilet is extremely noisy when flushed and literally rattles the walls. This hotel is on the historic register, but surely there must be some options to knock down some walls and expand the size of rooms to more contemporary standards. I am surprised that this property has been accepted by the Marriott/Renaissance brand. In fairness, I would point out that the common areas (lobby, restaurant, bar) are very nice.
