Great value B & B
So glad to see this hotel after a long but beautiful 14 mile walk from Bakewell. Our room was comfortable and it was lovely to have a bath to soak my weary limbs in. Dinner was good - plenty to choose from and breakfast was excellent. Great value.

Great location, iffy food
The hotel is ideally situated for exploring the Peaks. The roomy bar has a good range of real ales, and the staff throughout my 2 night stay were generally friendly and courteous. The rooms were fine (tho a little dated), with plenty of steaming hot water for a bath after a long day on the hill.My only complaint was the food. I had a steak on the first night, and it was almost inedible - it was ridiculously chewy. And in the morning, I plumped for the full English, but firstly the poached eggs were under cooked, and the barometer of any hotel breakfast, the quality of the sausage, showed a tasteless and seemingly meatless eating experience. But....the next day I had fried eggs, mushroom and bacon and it was great. Massive mushroom instead of the small tasteless ones dished up before, and bacon and eggs cooked just right.Anyway, that aside, the Scotsmans Pack is decent value at a decent standard of accommodation, in a great location, and with good beer, served with a smile (...except by the owner who seemed to be permanently grumpy!)

Scotsmans Pack - Jewel in the Hope Valley Crown
We eat out a lot and are certainly not afraid to speak our minds when things don't measure up but every now and then the opposite happens and what you think will just be an ordinary meal turns out to be something special. My first accolade goes to Steve and Sue, the landlord and landlady. How refreshing to find a couple with time to talk to you even though they are running a very busy pub. Steve looks a lot like Bruce Willis but the only Die Hard quality we experienced was his determination to ensure we were well looked after. Sue was the same, no I dont mean she looks like Bruce Willis, but she too looked after our every need. So on a snowy night we were given the warmest of welcomes by Sue Steve and the friendly bar staff. 10 out of 10, good start. Next the pub itself. The layout is very traditional with plenty of seating and a log fire to boot. On the walls are the usual nick nacks you would expect but in addition there are loads of posters and photos of local events which clearly shows the Scotsmans Pack plays a huge part in the social life of the village. There is some background music but it is 'background' and appropriate which makes it possible to hold a conversation at normal volume levels. The current financial climate has meant that to survive most pubs have had to up their game in order to survive. Sadly for many this has meant turning the pub into a restaurant with many completely abandoning their regular drinkers. I know of at least one former pub in the same village as the Pack who refuse to serve anybody who just wants a pint. I dont doubt that there has been little choice for the majority of pub owners but they could do much worse than look at what The Scotsmans Pack have been able to achieve. They serve meals throughout the day and early evening but they have made it clear that there is always a place for those who do not wish to dine but just want a pint and a chat in the time honoured tradition. After 9 ish the pub ceases to be a restaurant and immediately transforms into a very popular place for locals and visitors alike to sit or stand and do what they want; laugh drink tell jokes, discuss the issues of the day or just chill out. Again I have to score them 10 out of 10. Finally just a quick word about the food they provide. The quality is very high indeed. They have an extensive menu that caters for all tastes and a specials board to die for. If you get the chance try the Belly Pork. Its the best I have ever tasted. The choice is tremendous with far too many mouth watering options to mention here. So is it perfection. Well almost but not quite. The price of their drinks is way above any of the other local establishments which undoubtedly will put a lot of people off. Shame really because in every other respect The Scotsmans Pack is the perfect place to be on a snowy February evening.

Post ramble grub!
Been here a couple of times, always after a walk in the Peak District. Good Sunday lunches, although Yorkshire pud let's it down, decent sandwiches & chips but not on Sundays. A firm fave if I'm out that way. Car park is tricky though - very tight!
