'Does what it says on the tin'
Looking for a cheaper hotel for a citybreak in Barcelona we came across this one which appealed because of its proximity to the beaches.It is a bit basic, the room we were allocated was fine apart from overlooking a building site but at least we saw the sea. We were on a bed and breakfast tariff and must say that the breakfasts are good with a great variety of cereals, hot and cold buffets, tea, coffees and juices. I felt that overall it was a pretty basic hotel with few frills. It is quite a way out of the centre of the city but taxis stop outside. We walked everywhere though. It is a 25 minute walk to the Olympic Port along the beach - there are plenty of eating places there; that is if you turn right out of the hotel. If you turn left and walk a couple of blocks there is a Pharmacy and a bit further on, a lovely little cafe bar which does great tapas at a reasonable price.The Poblenou district is interesting to explore but we had gone to Barcelona to do some sightseeing. Next time we go we will probably pay more to stay at a hotel nearer the city centre with more to offer than Rafael Hotel Diagonal Port can offer.

Better than expected
Stayed here pre-cruise as part of a package. Room and shower 4 star, breakfast food (not service) 2 star. Comfortable, firm beds. Quiet situation just across road from beach. Exceptionally helpful staff at reception. Very clean hotel which has recently changed hands from Hotels Rafael.Bus 41 stops outside the pharmacy (out of the entrance, turn left) takes you to Place de Catalunya. Poblenou metro station is a pleasant 10 minute walk from the hotel. A 10 journey central zone carnet ticket costs ¿¿¿10, and can be shared. Amazing value!Not many places to eat in immediate vicinity. We tried the Chinese - out of hotel entrance, turn left and walk past the pharmacy. We ate there a couple of times, the food was good and very inexpensive - ¿¿¿26 for 3 main courses with rice and a couple of beers!

Nice bed, problems with the shower
The location is very nice, close to the beach. The bed was comfortable, the room was quite and I selpt very well. Also the breakfast was good. However, I had problems with the shower, the water was either too cold or too hot.

Cannot fault
Stayed in the hotel overnight before a cruise. The room was adequate and there was plenty of variety at breakfast. Left our cases there until time to go to the port. Also had lunch which was very good and well priced at 3 courses for 15 euros.

Below average
We spent two nights at this hotel before cruising on Norwegian Spirit. On arrival we were shown to our room. Very basic, bed very hard and room smelled very smokey. Because we had been travelling all day we were hungry and decided to eat I. The hotel. It was a very basic dinner. Chicken and mushroom kebabs sounded appealing but it seems they didn't know the difference between mushrooms and courgettes. The dessert was a disaster. My husband and I ordered the same, raspberry sponge cake. They had take it from the freezer I to the microwave and then serve it. Mine was still frozen so I sent it back to the kitchen. A few minutes later another one arrived. Same thing frozen again. I told the waiter not to bother again. He made some excuse that the microwave wasn't working properly. Over dinner we decided to upgrade to the suite. An extra 44 euros + tax. It boasted a jacuzzi and a king size bed so we thought it would be worth it. I could have cried when I saw the jacuzzi. Very small bathtub. The bed was comfortable though. Breakfasts were the highlight of the stay and the convenience of having a taxi stand right outside. Staff were reasonable. This hotel is rather tired and needs an overhaul.
