Perfect escape
I recently spent 4 nights in Amsterdam. The city was a wonderful experience. Yes it does justify the title of Venice of the north. Friends made the arrangements for us, we had recently arrived in Europe from Australia, and at every turn from the warm greeting at he front door to restaurants to breakfast to the concierge and check in check out, every member of staff went that legendary extra mile to may our stay memorable. The location is very convenient to the city, the trams the airport and the trains are just an easy walk away. If you have time to explore you will find the surrounding area enchanting.

Don't stay here!
My friend and I booked two deluxe double rooms for two nights in early May, and have never regretted a hotel choice so much. From the start we were both struck by what my friend described in the lift on the way up to our rooms as the "cold efficiency" of the check in. Little did we know then that to call it efficient was very wide of the mark. (Cold was spot on though.) We'd booked double rooms (and received letters confirming this). Both the rooms we were actually allocated turned out to be twins, something the receptionist had failed to mention at check in. We both requested a change of rooms (as a twin bed was clearly much less comfortable than a double). I was fractionally ahead of my friend, so got what turned out to be the last double they had available (although my temporary satisfaction at being moved was slightly undermined by the attitude of the receptionist who seemed to me to be doing her best to make me feel I was a trouble maker for having the effrontery to ask her to honour my booking). My friend was less lucky. In conversations with both the reception staff and the duty manager he was told they were fully booked so couldn't move him to a double. There was no recognition that they had let him down and no attempt to make it up to him (not even a free drink at the bar, let alone anything more substantial that might at least have made it clear they were sorry).I didn't mind settling for a twin quite as much, so offered to change rooms with him, but he wouldn't hear of it (as, typically thoughtful, he wouldn't think of inconveniencing me for something that was clearly the hotel's fault). But he was very upset, cancelling our reservations at the hotel's restaurants, which we'd been looking forward to trying. It wasn't so much that they had made a mistake - promising him a double room and only providing a twin - what was really hard to take was that they clearly didn't care that he felt so let down and had done precisely nothing to make amends. So I tried to talk to them on my friend's behalf. I didn't want to have to explain the (private) circumstances which made the response he'd had received so upsetting (and in a decent hotel with staff who cared about their customers it wouldn't have been necessary). However, the complete lack of any sign of understanding of his complaint or any willingness to do anything positive to address it, led me to tell them that he is very ill and this was the first trip he had been able to make for a year, so it was very important to him and his confidence in travelling again that it went as smoothly as possible. I'm sorry to say that even this made no difference to the reception supervisor or duty manager - even now not a single word of apology or regret was forthcoming and no gesture of compensation was offered. The only "help" I received was a hastily typed note (not even on headed paper) from the reception supervisor, confirming her verbal assurance that the hotel wouldn't charge our credit cards for either night of our stay if we cancelled our reservations on the spot (which we therefore did, hoping that even though they'd broken their (written) word about the rooms we'd booked, they would at least refrain from charging us for the substandard accommodation offered in their place.) The completely cold and uncaring attitude of the staff we had to deal with at this dreadful place ruined my friend's holiday and has made him decide not to use what limited energy and time he has left doing one of things he most loves, travelling. So if I could award a negative rating instead of the minimum one star to this hotel, to properly reflect the damage they've done, I'd gladly do it, and I would urge anyone giving even passing consideration to staying at the Hotel Okura Amsterdam not to touch it with a ten foot pole.

Lovely hotel-but expensive
The Hotel Okura really is a lovely hotel-the rooms are fabulous, the food is fantastic and the staff are excellent....However-for a hotel that is pretty expensive to stay at, the fact that you have to pay for Wi-Fi, and for use of the leisure facilities, it's a major grumble on my part. It's like they are just trying to fleece you for as much as possible-I mean, my local coffee shop offers free Wi-Fi and a hotel where I'm paying ¿¿¿300 a night is trying to charge me?!?! I'm sorry, but that get's my goat!Fortunately the conference that I was attending had a corporate deal to sort out internet access!Location wise, the hotel is a fair distance from the train station-but Amsterdam is a fantastic city to mooch around and explore, so it doesn't impact your visit at all!

The Hotel Okura Amsterdam
I visit Amsterdam frequently and my home away from home is the Okura Hotel. The staff are excellent from Guido the Doorman, Didi and Natasha in Serre and Marc, Anne-Belle and Edde in the Lobby Bar and 23rd Floor Lounge. They are always anticipating my needs and no request is to small for them to immediately devote what ever energy needed to make it happen.

Nice hotel! Good Breakfast! Great staff! Great view (if top floor)
Hotel Okura is a nice hotel, specially if you are traveling to Amsterdam for business meetings and conventions. However, as a simple tourist it is a great treat as well.We were in the executive floor, which for the same price it included the entry to swimming pool, gym and sauna (great spa, great saunas (unisex sauna and steam room, and also a women's only sauna. In the women changing room there is also a free use sunbed. Btw, if you like yoga they have classes of Yoga on Fridays, free to join. The spa treatments are also nice). Being in the executive floor also gives you freeway to the executive lounge, where there are always nice snacks and drinks to eat special in the early afternoon and evening. n the morning you can have also some treats in the executive lounge). The hotel is not in the very city center, but it is still city center. i had to take a taxi to the main train station and it cost me only about 9 euros. The tram 25 is very handy, although I walked a lot, and for instance Rembrandtplein is about 25 minutes walking easily. The tram is very easy. Tram 12 goes to some other museums, and 25 goes to city center and most other tourist destinations in Amsterdam. The hotel is very nicely located. i can't believe people who complained about it being far! It is actually in a good place, tranquile and easy reach to everywhere.I would like to mention the amiability of the bellboys and doormen, all always very nice, chatty and helpful!Restaurants in the hotel are good, although they could do better if they were not so expensive, but one can always go outside for dinner. Our room was in front of elevator and at first it was a bit disturbing to imagine that it could be noisy, but it was not. They offered to change to a different room in 3 days when they had more availability, that after the first night when we realised it was not noisy we decided not to move.Something we did not like is that the light in front of the closet is sensitive to movement so it would constantly switch on even if one is waking up in the middle of the night to go to the toilet and also it is annoying when one is sleeping an the other is returning later on. Even more annoying when during the day one is wanting to see what is in the closet, because the same light switches off after few seconds of being triggered.People in the reception were extremely nice. There was only one guy that wanted us to pay a supplement, but we think it was a small confusion easily fixed the day after by one of the other receptionist.Breakfast is nice, some food was overcooked during the week we stayed, and some mornings the porridge was excellent and others it was just average... but in general mega good. We enjoyed our stay. The view from the room was great, the bathroom was very nice (separated shower and bath tub). Two sinks (which I also liked). The WC had this rinsing device to keep you "cleaner", it is like a WC/Bidet together. What else, the lights can be switched n and off (as well the curtains open and close) from a remote machine on the bedside table, which is also nice.Overall it was a nice experience. We did not see any other room so we can't compare, our room was classic decor, functional, everything seem well taken care of, although a sticker in a bed side table left by somebody else ruined a bit the place. Pitty the windows can't be fully opened. The toiletries were not 100 per cent as posh as we expected, but hey,.. having a WC/bidet is priceless.. hihihihi.Overall -again- people were beyond kind, helpful, open, and professional,... also the waiters in the breakfast room. Thank you Okura for a nice stay!
