We booked as a last minute thing to go to Thirsk races on sat 18th, finding it was booked up, we thought we'll try friday 17th stay over and go to races on sat, excellent room, superb meal, good beers, friendly atmosphere with caring welcoming staff. Had a great time, and started the race day with a cracking breakfast. Would gladly stay again.

good weekend
stayed here with my husband as a weekend away, weve seen this pub before and we were ataying there as a dummy run for july when we stay over for the racing,The pub had a really friendly atmosphere and the staff very lovely and very welcoming, our room which was a twin upstairs had a shower (with shampoo and shower jel) the water was red hot and the beds were comfortable, the stay was pleasant with a good nights sleep and a very good breakfast i would recommend this as it just mins from the station and about 10mins walk to the racecourse,We had evening meal there aswell and found the restaurant very good and plentiful well worth the money for the stay,

Excellent Sunday Carvery
I regularly go to the Vale of York for their carvery on Sunday. The food is always good and is excellent value for money. The service is also good and the staff are very friendly and helpful. If you are in the bar before your meal try to sit away from the door as it can be a bit cold there!

Good Breakfast
I was a bit worried on reading the reviews but the accomodation was fine and the breakfast was very good. The room we were in was clean and comfortable it had 5 single beds in it so I can see where people may regard this as a hostel. The bathroom was large and clean. The door to the bathroom had a label which read "No Food Or Fishing Bait allowed" Which I thought was a bit strange. It was quite near the racecourse so if there was a few of you here for the races it would be fine.

Fawlty Towers
Quite simply an appalling excuse of a hotel. The strange stench that greeted us upon entering the bedroom/cupboard was the equivalent of several piles of mouldy laundry. The decor was like watching Life on Mars and the grotesque shades stayed in your head even when you shut your eyes. The 'en suite' part is very tenuous, mouldy seals, leaking shower - together with the previous unfortunate occupiers bathroom products and warning signs of not eating or bringing fishing bait into the room.No pictures, furniture, style, class or elegance. The Vale of York exudes everything a B & B should not be.Reccomendations - hire a cleaner, painter, style expert, or alternatively a demolition company to save the expense and knock the accomodation down. The plus point, the owner is very friendly and amiable which itself takes some guts.
