Very enjoyable stay
Stayed at the West Grange from 7 to 14 May, while visiting family in Thatcham. Staff pleasant and helpful, breakfasts freshly prepared to order, and executive room spotless. Ate in the restaurant on the Sunday afternoon, and the carvery was excellent. Three choices of roast: pork, lamb and beef, with a large selection of vegetables. Have used this hotel on several occasions in the past with mixed results; however the all-round improvement this time was noticeable.

I have stayed several times at this hotel and I have always found the staff polite and helpful. The food is of a high standard and the rooms are spotless. The prices are comparable if not better than the local main chain hotel.

Never Again!
Arrived around 5pm 21st April '13..and somewhat dejected at the very tired appearance of the hotel. No-one present at reception, and waited for a young lady to appear from a door behind the counter (which had a bell on it obviously to attract attention). She checked us in, and informed us "you have already been upgraded" ! We walked through corridors, up the lift, through more corridors to our room. The room was "ok", but if that was an upgrade, dread to think what we had originally booked. We purchased a DBB package for 1 night. Around 7pm we went to the restaurant looking forward to our evening meal....empty all but a couple of customers in the bar seating area. We picked up our own menu and was quite a while before the barman attended to us. Having chosen a table in a completely empty dining room we chose our food...then the problems started. Ordered Sea Bass and Lamb - then told they were 'off' because the menu was being changed, so now put in a spot to choose something else from the rather limited choice remaining. We ended up with steak which was in fact quite nice and presented reasonably well. Now comes the dessert......My husband chose the 3 portion cheese board, selecting these from the choice of 5 - my dessert choice was again unavailable as was the cheesecake due to a menu change. So, we opted to share the full 5 portion cheese board. This took more than 15 minutes to assemble (do 5 pieces of cheese and some biscuits really take this long to put together !?). Having arrived on our table we then had to get the barman to come and inspect the cheese - we were missing the 2 blue cheeses of the 5 varieties and the remaining 3 had been doubled up to compensate. Again the pathetic excuse was the menu change. We had an apology from the barman, but would it not have been better to ACTUALLY tell the guests before ordering what they DID NOT have. Anyway, we don't believe them. The manageress came to apologise and said as a gesture the wine would not be charged to the room. Thank goodness for that.As for breakfast - well, nothing special, and why do hotels who seemingly have only a couple of guests staying, cook around 10 eggs and leave them on a hot tray so that they look congealed and unappetizing, but state in the menu that they will cook things fresh - forget the pre-cooked eggs and just cook them fresh anyway....that is wasteful.We have completed the BWSurvey and have had a response, apologizing and saying that they need to have customer comments to improve their service..., (that's debatable) and hope we will return to give them another chance......oh dear - NO WAY.!!!! EVER !! And this was most certainly NOT value for money.Only 2 nights previously we had stayed at another BWHotel in the Northeast, which was ten out of ten and absolutely fantastic.

Great stay
Came here for a quiet weekend and to visit Newbury. Were upgraded to an executive room. Plenty of room, clean andmodern. Friendly staff and the breakfast was amazing. Not too far from Newbury and Kennet and Avon canal . This is more a business hotel but we had a great time here. Would definitely stay again.

One night only
Room really good and clean, hotel staff friendly. Intended to eat in theRestaurant until we saw the prices!! No-one ate in restaurant that night - everyoneate in the bar. Quite a few business men using this hotel, food really good butexpensive.Breakfast buffet seemed to have been standing a long while, saving grace you could orderyour eggs to be done however you wished, so they were hot.
