We arrived at 8 p.m. local time, very tired and were told that there were no rooms free, despite having booked the holiday over 6 months beforehand. They moved us to another nearby hotel, Khao Lak Bayfront, for 3 nights. While we were at the Bayfront, our holiday rep visited us and we explained our disappointment. He rang the hotel and as a result we were given a room upgrade to a bungalow with a sea view, vouchers for 3 evening meals, a free Thai massage each and late check-out to 4 p.m.This made up for the disappointment considerably!Once we were back at the Khao Lak Resort it was lovely. The hotel is right on the beach and our bungalow was only 50 meters away down a hill. The verandah on our bungalow looked down onto the beach through the trees and we spent many happy hours there reading and listening to the sea and the birdlife.The staff were all friendly and the food was good and not too pricey for a good hotel. Our only complaint was the hardness of the mattresses.The shop on site is also very handy for water and snacks as the town is a good 20 minute walk away.Our tip would be to visit Peter's Bar, just 200 Meters south along the beach. The food and cocktails there were great and very inexpensive and the staff really friendly. We even had a free hot pot meal there on our last night because we were such regular customers.We only ate out in the town once because there is a lot of road noise in all the restaurants on the main street and the prices were not any cheaper than at Peter's.Wouldn't recommend the night market at all. The goods are not priced and they start to haggle at such high prices it discouraged us. We found you could buy all the same items in the shops in town anyway, and know what price to expect.

Stayed 12 nights in this beautiful bit of paradise. Bungalow set back in a bit of rain forest was comfortable with a large bathroom.Pleasant,relaxing and unpretentious. The staff were friendly and helpful. A bit of a climb to breakfast but food and variety was good and it was wonderful looking out over the resort which was not too large. The hotel restaurants and bars more expensive than in khao lak but good local dishes for lunch. Thai massages also more expensive but worth the extra due to friendly service and spotless surroundings. The walk into khao lak only took about 10 mins depending on pace and was easily manageable every evening unless you have walking difficulties.Most of the way was lit. But I liked to have a small torch for the late walks back. One of the few places I really would have liked to stay longer.

We stayed for 5 nights as part of a 14 night holiday in Thailand. After the madness of Bangkok it really was paradise!We were upgraded from a Superior bungalow to a Deluxe bungalow - which was great. We were just a few metres back from the beach and very near the fabulous pool. We loved the bungalow, it was very rustic but with all you need - safe, tea/coffee making facilities, fridge etc., It had a brilliant large balcony where you could sit and watch the sunset over the sea - perfect!We loved the fact that it felt and sounded like you were in the jungle, but we were very near to a couple of beach bars and restaurants, and the restaurant on site was very good. It's about a 10 minute walk into central Khao Lak, which I have to say we were a little disappointed with. It was basically on a very busy road, with restaurants/bars and shops on either side. However on a short stay you don't really need to use the town, you have all you need at Khao Lak resort. We loved the area at the back of the beach where the sunbeds were which was very spread out, we thought the setting was the best of all the hotels on that part of the beach. You could relax all day on your sunbed overlooking the sea, just moving a few feet to one of the bars for food or drinks when you felt the need! The whole resort felt very laid back and relaxed. Extremely well kept by all the staff who worked very hard, in particular the ones who we saw sweeping the sandy paths every day!Our only minor complaint was that they allowed people to get away with putting towels on sun beds very early. We stayed at the end of our holiday at La Flora, where it wasn't allowed and surprisingly people actually kept to the rules there.Comparing Khao Lak Resort and La Flora, both were great for different reasons, and some people may prefer La Flora, but our favourite was Khao Lak Resort for the ambience and the setting.

Exceptional value for money. Place literally on the beach. Felt very private. Times that we had the beach to ourselves. Staff friendly and attentive. Opt for the bungalow and you wouldn't be disappointed. Would definitely return here

We stayed 8 nights at the end of March 13. This wonderful hotel had the unique feel on being a beach resort within the jungle. I could not think of a better hotel to capture the spirit of Thailand with its very authentic style buildings, facilities and accommodation, at the same time maintaining a luxury feel. Accommodation was of high quality, good size rooms (we only stayed in superior rooms) and balconies, although like most Thai hotels the beds were very hard, a problem easily solved by requesting extra padding for the mattress. All the staff were friendly and professional in approach particularly the reception. Great location as you were able to walk into town in 10 mins or so, but also had access at the hotel to probably the best stretch of beach along that part of the coast. Swimming pools that were built to compliment the resort surroundings were a godsend in the extremely hot temperatures and high humidity experienced (up to 38 degrees) during our stay. Khao Lak is a drive through town that has plenty of restaurants and enough shops together with a local market 3 times a week. The hotel atmosphere was very cosmopolitan and friendly, with a chance to make friends with other holiday makers, many of whom came from other parts Europe. We would certainly recommend this hotel and Khao Lak as a resort area in general if like us you prefer a picturesque and quieter location than the busier Phuket resorts.
