I've stayed at the Roosevelt several times during this last year.This was due to the fact that my husband was friends with the ex manager, so we got a preferable rate every time we'd go.For the rate we'd get, it was a great place to stay. But for the regular rate, is too much.The place is old. Old carpet, old curtains, extremely dirty windows (I think the windows were never cleaned).There's not enough place for the clothes. (the cabinets are so small it barely fit underwear.There's no minibar/fridge at the regular rooms. If you can get a room here for $200 a night, great. Be all about it. But for $400, NO WAY.I know is hard to find a nice hotel in the city and they are all overpriced, but get yourself another chance.

When looking at both of the beds in our room, we could tell that they had a huge dip in the middle of each one. The bedding was horribly old, and we were really disappointed in the room. The lobby was beautiful, and the concierge was very helpful, but they could have used more employees, as this is a very busy hotel. We went to check in around noon, but were told that our rooms wouldn't be ready until after 3 pm.

I am sometimes amazed by customer ratings.....seeing that the Roosevelt gets 4 stars on average an even a handful of 5 makes me think I have to revisit my standards. Clearly I was spoiled when I lived in Europe or Asia ! The Roosevelt is very simply a wonderfully located, but dated hotel. The service varies from OK to nonexistent depending on the area you are talking about (with an exception : I found housekeeping to be quite nice and polite) and this is also a little bit of a tourist magnet. yes the rooms are cosy : if you think 15sqm works for you. Some attention has been paid to the bedding and overall the place is clean (again : housekeeping saves the day), but by and large the place simply needs a make over and needs a middle eastern billionaire to buy it out and re-do it totally. Sadly it is very expensive too. I am not sure what the future holds for places like this.

I attended a conference based in The Roosevelt so automatically booked a special rate room. I will not do that again.Where do I start? My room was tiny, facing inwards with no overhead light, so dark at all times. To use my laptop with connectivity and power, I had to perch on the edge of the bed with the laptop hanging over the bedside table and my power cable trailing across the room. The air con was very noisy and on a humid night sounded like an express train going through the room. What sleep I did get was interrupted every night, by the clock radio springing into life at random times, despite my attempts to turn it off. The only mirrors were in the bathroom, and being British, I have a fear of using electrical items in the bathroom and so had to style my hair using a tiny handheld mirror I'd brought with me.I was there for 3 nights. For a period of at least 12 hours, there was no connectivity in the hotel at all. The vending machine on my floor had run out of water on the first night, and still hadn't been restocked by the time I left. An empty plate of food I'd left in my room was still there 2 days later, despite the room being cleaned. Admittedly I could have put it outside my room, but it became a test to see how long it remained (it was still there when I checked out).On the second night my smoke alarm started beeping intermittently, probably because the battery was running out. I called Guest Services but got no answer so had to go to reception to report it.On my last night, I had someone else's bill put under my door. When leaving, I asked for a cab to JFK. The doorman got me a car - I asked if it was the same fixed fare of $55. He said it was. Once in the car, when I questioned the fare I was asked whether I was paying by cash or credit card. I asked what the two prices were, but the driver would not commit until I had stated cash. The fare became $60 + $5 tolls (or $70 + $5 tolls for credit card). Due to the heavy traffic we took an alternative route which did not incur tolls, but the fare was still $65. I could put it down to my naivety, but I did not appreciate the doorman's actions.So, overall, not a pleasant experience. If I attend the same conference next year, I will be booking a room in an alternative hotel.

I was honestly a bit worried after reading some of the reviews, but we recently returned from a 5 night stay at The Roosevelt and had a great stay!Check in was efficient. Our room (a cozy queen) was certainly small, and a little old, but it was clean and the A/C worked great (though it was really loud!) There wasn't much room for our luggage, but we made it work, and we were hardly in the room much anyway. The only small complaint we had is that we were never brought fresh soap (we bought some from a nearby drugstore) and we didn't receive a new plastic bag for the ice bucket one day. Also, the ice machine on our floor was broken the first half of our stay, but eventually fixed. The bathroom was showing some age, and the tub didn't look clean enough to bathe in, exactly, but the water pressure in the shower was really good, and we always had hot water.We rarely had waits at the elevators.The lobby bar was nice, the comfy seating especially appreciated after a long day of walking around the city. We appreciated the complimentary bowl of nuts, and though the food there was pricey, it was always good for a late night snack. Location was excellent! Within easy walking distance to Times Square and Herald Square and several subway stops. Several fun pubs within a few blocks distance as well.We liked the rooftop bar, even though we only went up there once. Lovely view!On our departure day, the doorman got us a car to take us to the airport, cheaper and nicer than a cab. Overall, I'd recommend The Roosevelt and would stay there again.
