My wife and I are of an age where we enjoy revisiting places we liked years ago. We booked this hotel through Hotels.com. who were very prompt and efficient. They even gave us a local weather forecast for the three days we proposed staying here. In our former visits the Campaniles boasted large log fires crackling in large fireplaces, with excellent choices at mealtimes. How things have changed, and for the worse. The open fires have gone, now, which we knew. What we did not know was how this hotel had deteriorated with age.On our arrival at reception mid-afternoon we found the desk unmanned, and waited several minutes before I found the staff sitting outside at the rear and not too keen to come out and attend to us. A poor start. We got our key and found, at that time of day, the room had been only partly cleaned. We could hear the cleaners shouting to each other nearby. We made a cup of tea and the cleaners arrived. We went outside and sat in the car for less than two minutes. On our return to the room the cleaners had gone and locked our room with the key inside. Management were not too pleased to have to unlock it for us. There were only two towels in the room - no hand towels, and no hand towels available. Be prepared to use a wet bath-towl next morning if showering before dinner. Meals are poor, and the limited breakfast choice is pricey at 10 euros inc tax. There was no house wine and the hotel was recommending white Bordeaux at approx 9 euros per half bottle. They also have a good choice of beers. Dinner meals were adequate. We were made to pay after every meal, though other guests paid only at the end of their stay. Perhaps they don't trust people in their seventies. The outer door of our room had suffered attempts to break in, judging from the gouges and deep dents around the door jamb, Inside the ageing room was clean and the beds comfortable. There is a large flat screen tv, but only French speaking channels are available, unlike other Calais hotels where English is also available. Wi Fi is available. There is limited shelf-space available, with no shelves in the open wardrobe, and five or six fixed hangers. This suggested that this Campanile is suited mainly for an overnight stay There was a welcome infra-red bathroom heater, which was welcome, as well as tea and coffee making facilities. Cardboard cups were supplied, which is the norm nowadays, despite there being at nearby Arques the largest glass,china and porcelain factory in the Western World.! In summary this hotel is ok for budget overnight stays only. There is only 1 towel each and virtually no shelf or storage space. Don't expect warm friendliness from all of the staff. You won't get it. The Campaniles of yesterday would not have recognised this one.

Will not be returning to Campanile Hotels as I totally agree with previous contributor - the Campanile chain seems to have lost its way and this is the second poor experience with them since January. At Calais the room was cold, hard to heat up, 'tired' and poorly maintained. Not properly cleaned. No answer when I rang reception with a query. Finally went along to reception and, in fairness, was offered another room but by then I had unpacked and couldn't be bothered changing. Restaurant cold and draughty - huddled by one of wall heaters. No cheese course available as restaurant had run out of cheese - could this be the only restaurant in France to have no cheese - amazing! Breakfast not what it used to be. In the bread tray was a wholemeal loaf but no bread knife + half a pre-mauled baguette. On departure, I presented the 'loyalty(?)' card for Campanile Hotels I have held for about 8 years but it turned out that it is no longer valid - first I have heard of this change and so much for loyalty! Unhelpful (verging on rude) response from staff at the hotel regarding this issue.

Used Campanile's for many many years and found them to be serviceable and value for money with excellent restaurant facilities for the traveler. Over the past years they have failed to maintain their past standard, some refurbishment but mostly tired. Restaurants lost their excellent value for money food, with cold restaurants having done away with the open fires some years back. Choice is now restricted and not exciting, breakfast reduced in selection and presentation. Needs a rethink.

We stayed as a couple for 3 nights, using the hotel as a base only to explore Pas-de-Calais and to do some shopping. It was perfectly adequate for this purpose, our room being just about big enough for a ( big ) double bed, with an open wardrobe for hanging space, a desk/table for the flat screen TV, and separate bathroom. On the plus side, it was cheap(ish), and wonderfully well heated, which was especially welcome considering the freezing cold weather outside. The bathroom had a pull cord electric fire on the wall which made a big difference, and the hot water was HOT! The bed was firm but comfortable, with 4 pillows, and a warm lightweight duvet. On the downside..... the decor was old and a bit flaky round the skirting boards, and looked as if a really good clean would help. The bathroom could have been cleaner, especially the toilet. The shower over the bath was just about adequate, but what a difference it would make to replace it with something a bit more modern. Oh, and the bath would be great for someone no taller than 4 foot! ( I could just sit in it with my knees bent). It was quite deep, but had no hand rail, so totally unsuitable for anyone needing support of a rail. We ate dinner on our first night in the restaurant. Actually, the service was pleasant, the food was ok, but very limited choice. We decided to skip breakfast ( and save 10 euros per person) and buy coffeee and croissant whilst out. There was a kettle in the room and very tiny quantities of milk( ie 2 little pots), coffee and tea,with polystyrene cups, but to be fair,the reception staff are happy to provide more on request. All in all, We would have to say it was just about ok for us on this occasion, but only because we never intended to spend much time in the room, and it was lovely and warm, and conveniently located. That said, we would probably not be returning any time soon.

Excellent reception on arrival unfortunatly thats where it stoppedThere was a free drink in our room so at 1815 we went to the reception to have a drink before our evening meal (for which we had reserved a table) we were told there was no bar and we could not have a drink unless we were eating. We said were were eating we were then told we could not eat before 7pm. We said we did not need the food till 7 just a drink after a 7 hour car drive. This was not allowed before 7pm. We never did have our free drink. Why do they advertise a bar if there is not one.Bathroom,Hot water ran out during 2 very quick showers.Wall mounted wall heater did not work, so a rather cold shower.The room was clean but very poorly maintained, it really needed refurbishing. Adjoining room,There was a connecting door to an adjoining room, the door was locked but the noise which came through the door from the other guests was awful.Evening Meal,The one thing that Campanile generally get right is the restaurant, not this time.The buffet was very poor, not to the usual standards.Worst of all was how rushed the poor waitress was during a fairly busy evening. She was booking guests in and out taking food and wine orders and clearing tables. We eventually had to leave without ordering a desert, extra wine or coffee as it was obvious we would wait forever to be served.
