OK hotel but needs to up its game.
Stayed at JW Essex House for a week in May 2013. We were really looking forward to our stay and particularly the "JW" experience, we were unfortunately disappointed. Having stayed in the various levels of Marriott over recent years this hotel is yet to be of JW standards. The Ritz Carlton one block down is head and shoulders above the JW. The rooms were a good size for New York but in need of refurbishment (which we heard that this was in progress). One of our major complaints was that despite being advised (in writing) that the executive lounge was opening on April 30th, it was not open when we arrived on May 7th. The staff on-site were varied - some "ok" and some that were excellent (particularly Peter in the bar who was a blast! and Adrian Simpson, Front Desk Manager, who was extremely helpful & went a long way to make our stay more comfortable). I imagine once the hotel has undergone all its refurbishments (Marriott acquired the property in Sept last year), it may well be the place to be, but at the moment it lacks something..... The best thing about JW Essex house is its Central Park location. Take that away and I think customers would be less complementary.

Comfortable Hotel
The Essex House is a luxurious property with great access to the subway, Central Park, and all of New York City. The rooms are smartly appointed and rather large by New York City standards. Though undergoing some additional renovations (e.g. Concierge Lounge), I would strongly recommend staying here.

Fab only hotel to stay
Love this hotel have stay many times.ths staff are helpful,willing too help if you have a problem big or small.went for my birthday they sent a cake and flowers to my room.Wonderful I have never had a problem.Rooms clean bedding very nice.all in all no faults what so ever.fab location .the flowers in the lobby are always wonderful.This hotel has had many,many changes over the years I just hope it does not end up like the plaza which now has no charm whatsoever ever.

The best location and a very good Hotel!
We booked this hotel well in advance, almost 5 months before our visit. Fortunately, we have not cancelled our booking as we came across some very negative reports. The first day we were in the 24th floor and an air-conditioning unit outside the window in the night was very noisy. Next day we were relocated to the 36th floor and we were given a discount for this relocation! We had a big and well organized suite facing the Central Park with very good view!The location for us was the best, near to everything we wanted. The Hotel is old of course, but beautiful and well preserved. We like the service, the bar at the South Gate and found the concierge very helpful. We will consider coming back to the same Hotel next time we come to NY if we deiced to be near to the Central Park again.

Lacking in quality
The staff was available and helpful when needed. The lobby is nice. The adjacent restaurant was being renovated but still open while we were there. The room was lacking in quality. Given the price and the photos on the website, I was expecting something of a Ritz Carlton quality and its just not that caliber. The location is great though.
