Grand old lady bearing up under the strain, if a bit arthritic
The Metropole has old-world charm and character at modest prices (out of season, certainly). Itis very close to the centre of the old town in Brussels, 5 mins. walk from the Bourse, making it a good all-round choice. The WiFi coverage is dreadful, extremely slow and disconnecting periodically, while the management is a little stiff and out of step. All in all, not bad for an old lady, and the business centre area is much more recent and quite good for small meetings (apart from the WiFi). Not very wheelchair-friendly, though, with it's original gated lift and many steps between the various levels.

Luxury!
We stayed here for one night and were treated to luxury. It was our honeymoon so were given a nice surprise upon our return to our room of a bottle of French wine and a lovely note from the hotel manager. Yummy buffet breakfast, lovely and helpful staff and the rooms are beautiful.

Perfect Location
This is an Old fashioned 5* hotel that is perfectly located for the centre of Brussels. They provide a great (full English and continental) buffet breakfast. The decor in the public areas are art deco and reminded us of an episode of Poriot. The room that we stayed in was slightly tired. Overall very pleased with our choice and we recommend to others looking to enjoy cafe culture of the Grand Place and surrounding area.

Pokey room and a little jaded
Not a good stay at this hotel. The room was dark and pokey. Thankfully, we only stayed for one night but this did not stop the cleaning staff from trying to enter at 8am. Overpriced for what it is, a little off the beaten track, and we found out when we got here that the cafe was shut. I would avoid this place

Glamorous 5 stars on the surface...
We spent two nights at the Metropole at the end of April. The hotel is located next to the De Broukere Metro station (public transport is excellent) which is virtually the centre of Brussels, so plenty of restaurants and pubs nearby. The hotel has a very large and glamorous Art Nouveau style reception area. We were checked in at noon with no problems. I booked a superior room, and asked in advance for a refurbished room at the back of the hotel. We got a room at the back of the hotel that had not been refurbished (2019). If this was a superior room then we were glad we didn't go for a basic one. The room was fairly large with a large bathroom (a few smashed tiles, cracked grouting, very unsecure bath handrail and a trace of what looked like mildew round a part of the bath spoilt the classy image), wardrobe, desk, bedside cabinets, an old-fashioned box-style TV and a free minibar (your allowance is 2 Cokes, 2 waters and 2 Maes beers per day). The bed was very comfortable and clean, and the room was quiet - although you could hear the occasional emergency services vehicle blasting by the front of the hotel - surely to be expected in a big city centre.The caf¿¿ in the hotel (which was supposed to be a nice place to chill out with a coffee) was closed for refurbishment - shame. The breakfast area was unusually decorated. The entrance was very nice (with beautiful Oriental wall mouldings) and it was initially bright and welcoming. It was, however, let down by the shabby taxidermy display we were parked next to - upside down birds and dusty ferns detracted from the creepy peacock! Still not sure how PC this kind of thing is now (although a TV program the other night suggested taxidermy is back in fashion - who knew!). Along with surprisingly chipped crockery, holy linen and permanent ringmarks on our table and a variable quality of breakfast items, it was a disappointing start to the day. Again the staff were all very pleasant.We checked out on the Sunday morning very early, and the receptionist was again most professional.Overall the entrance to the hotel, reception, bar area and service gave a 5 star impression. However the tired room and breakfast experience suggested otherwise - if we were there for longer than two nights we probably would have been bothered to complain.
