A great "secret hotel"
After booking the bank holiday weekend in Madrid, we decided to gamble on a "secret hotel" on last minute.com and were pleased to find it was the Intercontinental Madrid. On arrival the hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Our room overlooked the courtyard and was reasonably sized with a very comfortable bed. We booked room only so can't comment on the food but enjoyed coffee and croissants at a cafe nearby and tapas at a nearby restaurant recommended by the concierge. The hotel is in a quieter area outside the city centre but has a frequent bus service and the metro gets you there in minutes.

Location let it down
This hotel has all the things you'd expect from Intercontinental - opulent decor, helpful concierge, generous-sized rooms and a plentiful breakfast buffet. But unfortunately, it is a fair distance from the Old Town which I hadn't appreciated when I booked (probably my oversight!) It's in a great spot for the lovely Serrano shopping street, which is a pleasant walk down to the Retiro park. But at night, taxi fares to get us back from the La Latina area - where most of the restaurants and night life is - added up.

Good RA treatment, nice lounge, bar and restaurant poor gym
As a Royal Ambassador I received an upgrade to a large Club InterContinental room complete with lounge access. In addition Royal Ambassador (the highest level of status with InterContinental) receive complimentary minibar, Internet and movies.I had an excellent meal on my two visits to the restaurant, cooked to perfection with top-class service. The bar staff were also very attentive.Only drawback with this hotel is the leisure facilities are poor, I've been to some IC hotels that feature excellent swimming pools, sauna, steam room, etc. At the moment the IC Madrid is renovating the gym and so the gym equipment is in a temporary room. I hope once the gym is reopened fully it will be of an excellent standard, but I don't think there's any plans for a pool or any other facilities.I think the hotel is mainly a business hotel, but getting to the centre of town is a nice relaxing walk or a short ride on a reasonably priced taxi.

Excellent stay
We arrived early as we were on the first flight out of london arriving at nine not expecting the room until the afternoon. However friendly staff sorted a room out for us and also upgraded it to a club room which was very comfortable. Breakfast was nice but suggest paying in advance as expensive if you buy when you are very. Overall no complaints.

Faboulous overall experience .
This was my 2nd stay in the past year . I particularly like the Intercontinental name and try to look for one where ever I travel either pleasure or business . Madrid on particular is an incredible venue . The staff are always cheerful and ready to take that extra step to help out. The club level service is definitely incredible !!!The location is perfect if you want to walk, take the metro or taxi.I was on vacation from Miami and hopefully when I return again to Madrid this will be my choice again.
