Breakfast with the fish
If you really want a different hotel experience, Gayana Eco Resort will provide it. You can stay in wooden chalets which are built right over the (in restoration) coral reef. Choose to have breakfast (delivered by boat) on your private deck and you can share it with the myriad colored coral fish that swim in shoals under your feet. A glorious way to start the day.In essence staying at this hotel is an amazing experience, as long as you enjoy swimming with fish, snorkelling, diving and island living. There are free and frequent boat trips to the mainland and the hotel's sister resort, Bunga Raya. Actually I'd recommend staying for, say, 4 days at the Eco resort and then 3 days at Bunga Raya as these resorts have a different feel to each other - Bunga Raya has rooms scattered amongst the jungle and a huge beach with lots going on. Gayana Eco resort is laid back and more secluded and has only a tiny beach at low tide.I'd recommend you choose an Ocean Villa for the best experience. Being able to relax on the deck over the coral fish and then walk down the steps into the warm water and snorkel around the bay is just a stunningly beautiful way to spend your day. Then, in the evening, join everyone in the open air bar to watch the sunset before wandering across to the good quality restaurant perched over the ocean.Inside the Ocean villas you'll find a large bathroom and walk in shower, supremely comfortable bed, chaise longue and TV, daily replenished fridge, good air conditioning and plenty of soft towels. The decoration is not 5 star, it is a wooden chalet after all, but it is comfortable.Breakfast is superb, whether you eat it on the verandah near the infinity pool or on your deck. Good variety of food and cereals, decent coffee and freshly cooked chef's special pancakes - delicious. We heard reports of rubbish in the bay brought in on the tide but there was very little when we stayed in June. Apparently the amount of rubbish depends on the season - the winter storms make it troublesome through to the spring - but in the summer the bay is quite clean. If you're lucky you'll see some local wildlife - monkeys come down from the forest backing on to the resort and there is the occasional lizard and snake to be seen. One of the best features is the Eco Centre where you can see how the resort is doing its best to restore the corals in the bay and learn a lot about the local underwater fauna.Hats off to the staff who are incredibly helpful and will do everything they can to please. They helped making our stay one of the most enjoyable holidays we've ever experienced.

Amazing Experience
Me and my husband stayed at the resort for 3 days, and during this time we went snorkeling, scuba diving, took a tour of the MERC facility and adopted a coral, and visited the sister resort Bunga Raya. The experience can be related to a fairy tale- All the staff are passionate and dedicated to what they do, and the service was friendly and welcoming. We also had the opportunity to meet with Thomas (Manager) who shared his story of how the resort came to be what it is today. The hotel room was kept in top condition, and although there was rubbish floating about on the water, it was obvious that this is for the most part out of the resorts control, but it was fantastic to see the staff making an effort to pick up what trash they could from the ocean. Our only regret is that we didn't stay longer to experience what the sister resort had to offer in regards to its activities, however we would recommend Gayana Eco Resort to those who want to get in the water and see what it has to offer - the experience is unforgettable.

Still work to do
We have been lucky to travel a lot over the last few years, we picked Gayana for our honeymoon after a wonderful week in koh samui getting married.Upon arrival late one night we were told the infinity pool was closed for the entirety of our stay, despite our booking months before. We could use the sister resort pool ( only two transfers a day at around 11 and 4). We slept, woke up and immediately spoke to the manager who offered to upgrade us to a palm villa for an extra ¿¿80 per night. We were in an ocean view room number 28 which was old, broken handrail into water, mouldy bathroom ( none of which we mentioned at this stage). We declined to pay more given the pool was out of service, and he kindly moved us later that day free of charge. The palm villa is immense. Huge suite, glass bottomed living area, plunge pool and steps to the ocean. The honeymoon package has 4 treatments in a very good spa, access to MERC and honeymoon coral package and a dinner in both restaurants. Good food in both but we ate in Macac many times and found both food and drinks very inconsistent. Literally different tasting food and drinks would come out each time, it was a bit of a laugh. We were determined to like the place so we turned a blind eye to the rubbish tha drifted in, it was fished out after a couple of days, but the point I think is that this is a very expensive resort, attempting a Maldives style experience, and frankly it's not up to par. Without the upgrade we would have left, furiously. Staff are lovely but literally speak to you off a script... If one more person commented that they hoped we would be back next year for our anniversary... maybe with a child, think I would have lost it! Sweet the first time, practically inappropriate by the fourth, with nothing genuine left. On check out the bill was wrong about 4 different ways. We pointed out both activities we had forgotten to be charged for, and some we weren't supposed to be charged. We eventually paid, and then the next morning were asked to paid more, which covered points we had discussed the night before and that we weren't supposed to be charged, left a bit of a bitter taste.I think the previous reviews have been fair, the key point is that this is a really expensive experience because of the bungalow on water aspect, which is very much ruined with rubbish floating in... You just can't charge these rates for that experience. I'm afraid I would not recommend it to a friend with Gaya Resort having recently opened in the same cove.Happy to provide more detailed feedback to management that goes beyond the short surveys we were asked to fill out after every meal, treatment and experience. One last point, I swam off our balcony a and snorkeled at the sister resort the following day and came out with over 100 bites (literally look like I have chicken pox) , not the resorts fault but makes a pool more crucial, and maybe a warning?

Unique and enjoyable experience!
We really enjoyed our stay here for 6 nts in March. We had booked a Mangrove Villa but when we arrived and checked into our room we noticed a really bad smell outside the door. On reporting this to reception we were promptly moved to an Ocean Villa and later advised that the problem had been caused by the breakdown of a pump on the grey water tank under the boardwalk. They said this happens quite a lot! (So why is a permanent solution not found?). The Ocean Villa was very nice but close to the renovation work being done on other Ocean Villas which wasn't really a problem. Only on a couple of occasions did the work get a bit too noisy. The best part of our stay was being able to snorkel direct from our villa. There were lots of different colourful fish species to see. The breakfast at Macac restaurant was great with a good selection of dishes to order from the menu plus a buffet for fruit, cereals, toast, breads, pastries etc. We found the quality of the food in general to be good.Drinks at the Latitude Bar at sunset were good and the view was magnificent. We took the opportunity to visit Bungaraya, the sister resort to Gayana, which is located about a 15min boat trip away around the other side of the island. It was beautiful, but almost deserted. We enjoyed an early dinner there and appreciated the good service and friendliness of their staff. The Gayana Eco Resort staff were also lovely and very friendly. The Marine Ecology Research Centre is well worth visiting and doing a great job to save the coral and giant clams. There are quite a few monkeys around but we find these amusing rather than a problem. The rubbish in the water wasn't really a problem whilst we were there. However, on the morning of our departure there was a high tide (higher than we had seen all week) and it had brought with it a lot of rubbish. We felt sorry for the staff who had to deal with it. The management should invest in a purpose built watercraft to deal with this. There was a 'red tide' on another day when we were there. None of the staff that we asked seemed to know what it was. The water went a reddish brown colour for about 18 hrs. Finally we asked the dive master and he said it was a 'red tide'. On googling this we found it is a regular occurrence in the waters off Sabah at this time of year.We left feeling very relaxed and would consider visiting again one day. Management just needs to concentrate on maintenance issues and addressing the rubbish problem (which is no fault of the resort - the powers that be in Kota Kinabalu should be addressing the cause).

The Attentive Service made all the difference
Gayana is not only a luxury resort...it is a luxury resort with attentive service and staff that truly cares. We stayed at Gayana for 2 nights 3 days in February 2013 and the experience was pure bliss. The resort is a boat ride away from civilization. It is designed as an eco resort and the resort premises and surroundings offer amazing nature walks and even jungle treks. During our stay we jungle walked, snorkeled, took morning yoga classes, kayaked around the island and had a picnic at a private beach. It was amazing and most of if free once there. Don`t get me wrong, this was not a cheap stay. But once mentally ready for the pricey package, we thoroughly enjoyed the infinity pool, the pool bar, private beaches and our beautifully designed bungalow. Note that as Gayana resort is only accessible by boat, if you stay there you will have to budget for their pricey restaurants as well. The resort has three restaurants ( one pool bar, one lunch / buffet dinner venue and one fine dining venue). All of them have good food but are quite expensive. Our restaurant bill at the end of the stay was higher than the accommodation bill!If you go to the resort with kids, they will have an amazing time. Aside from the facilities that the resort offers, they also have a great kids club with various activities for kids of all ages. All in all, we were happy with our stay! We also were impressed with their staffs responsiveness and positive attitude, which is not necessarily a prerequisite at luxury resorts.
