Scam hotel!
We booked this hotel for four nights through a travel agency at home. It was terrible. The room was very filthy, fungus in the bathroom and mildew on the walls. It almost smelled and felt like being in a swimming pool. The key broke while opening the lock. Reception told us that our booking didn't get through together with our payment. They asked us to pay again for four nights. When we refused and wanted to leave the hotel, they didn't want to give back the passports. After a huge fight and threats of calling the police, we got our passports back. We left immediately.

Don't stay here - it's a rip off
Staying at this hotel was one of the worst experiences I've ever had with a hotel. You read about how people will swindle you, but you never really think it will happen to you...well it happened to us.Upon checkin at the Charming Hotel, the manager, Tony Hoang, informed us that the hotel's AC and hot water wasn't working, so took our passports and Agoda receipts and he moved us to the sister hotel, Hanoi Capital Hotel. The rooms were gross. Mold on the walls, cockroaches, electric shocks in the shower, power outages, etc. Tony was very nice to us until he learned that we booked a Halong Bay tour through another agency and not him. When we went to check out, he told us there was an $80 charge for changing hotels. We reminded him he moved us because of what he said about the AC and hot water. He denied telling us that. He then said the charge was for using AC in the hotel. I told him I booked the rooms through Agoda and the description said they had AC. He said I never gave him my booking receipts. I said - yes I did, you personally ripped them out of my itinerary. Needless to say, we left without paying the ridiculous fee he was trying to con us into. However, in all of the confusion, we left our passports there!! Our tour guide tried calling the hotel, but Tony refused to give the passports to the tour guide assistant, and was telling them various stories about how we didn't pay our bill and then when we told the tour group we HAD paid, Tony changed his story and said he couldn't give the passports to anyone but us.So when we returned from Halong, we had to go back to the hotel and fight the fees all over again. But we still didn't pay his made up fees and successfully recovered our passports. We reported this hotel scam and Mr. Hoang's actions to the US Embassy in Hanoi.Don't stay here - for your own peace of mind!!!!

Annoying staff, ok no-frills rooms, alright location.
We ended up staying here after our hotel situation fell through when we landed. The airport recommended this hotel and we paid 25USD, one night for a 2 single bed room. When we got there, we ended up in a back room on the top floor (6th floor). The bathroom door didn't close all the way. The walls were a little dirty. When we went downstairs the next morning, the breakfast looked kind of drab. We decided to look around some more and told Tony (the manager) that we were planning on looking. He told us that he would offer us a new room for 18USD. We got lazy and took his offer after looking at the new room on the 4th floor, and it was a little bit nicer (the bathroom door closes!)Overall, it's ok. Definitely more backpacker kind of feel. The aircon works, the hot water works. The wifi was iffy. It worked in the lobby and on the 6th floor, but otherwise it didn't. When I asked Peter about the wifi on the 4th floor he just shrugged his shoulders and said yea it doesn't work. I stayed there for five days...no one did anything about it. Oh also, when I used the towel one morning I noticed that the new one they gave me was dirty. Well...not dirty dirty but there were black dirt spots all over it...itw as pretty gross. The thing that annoyed me more was about the staff. They weren't super helpful, UNLESS they were going to make money off of you. The day tour to Halong Bay was pretty terrible, don't do it. And after reading these reviews, I realised I got kind of ripped off. The good thing about this place though is its location. It's not right next to the lake, about a 10 minute walk (if you can figure out the streets!!) but the FOOD ON THIS STREET IS SO GOOD! We refused breakfast every morning, since right outside the hotel is a good pho ga stall, and a good bun cha place on the corner that turns into a bahn khot/banh xeo place in the evenings.

Staff pretends to be helpfull but rips you off!!!
Me and my boyfriend got to this hotel via some guy who told us he knew some good hotels in the area (when we arrived from the airport by bus). We went with him and really liked the hotel rooms. The prices were too high for us, so we bargained them down to 300 000 dong for a double room (on the sixth floor) including breakfast. Reasonable.Everything was going well untill we booked a tour to Halong Bay with these people. We looked everywhere before booking but found it really hard to judge what was a good trip and what was bad. They convinced us that a trip for about $50 (our budget) was going to be hell. Little food and boat will sink, were their words. So they said they would give us the more fancy tour of $95 for $80 and we thought we had a reasonable deal. The tour was really nice and we enjoyed it a lot. But EVERYBODY on the boat paid $55 (or less!!!). It ruined the trip a bit and when we arrived back at the hotel we had a nice conversation with the manager and his sidekick Huan/Peter (NOT!).At first they did not believe us when we told them everybody paid $55. It was just not possible. In the end the manager got angry and told me I was a liar. And YES he put the extra $25 per person, so $50 in his pocket (his words literally) as a commission. Before we went they insisted to book traintickets for us to Hue. Our little friend (he called himself our friend) Huan/Peter asked us if we wanted 1st level hard beds, and we were ok with that. After paying him total $60 for 2 tickets he said that he allready knew that there were no 1st levels anymore, but he would make his best effort to book them anyway.... we had a bit of an arguement but were happy with the price and would see what he would come up with when we arrived back from Halong Bay.AFter the whole arguement of paying too much for Halong Bay they also said that there were no traintickets for the next day....they could get them but we had to pay more. With a lot of trouble they gave us the money back (with an exchange rate that was slightly different that what we paid but we just wanted to get OUT).Sorry for the long review but we really had to get this off our chest. We tried to keep our cool while arguing with them, but it was really frustrating. I hope the manager shoves the $50 where the sun doesn't shine...Rooms are nice though but bargain (you can get A LOT off the price). DO NOT BOOK ANYTHING (traintickets are much cheaper at the trainstation and it is possible to book a nice Halong Bay Tour for $55 or less).

We expected more
Our stay at the hotel was barely OK. At the reception we had trouble finding who were staff and who were people just hanging around, nobody really seemed to care. But the room was clean and the bed was allright. The breakfast was a disaster, only cold rice and some noodles, no bread or butter. We tried to order an omelette but nothing happened, other guests trying to order the same only got a fried egg. Bad day at the hotel? We stayed only one night.
