"Charming antique furniture" means exactly what it says. It was a beautiful, great experience to greet the New Year in such a city as Florence! The staff is friendly and amazing and very helpful and it won't hurt that when you are travelling you will show some knowledge of the language of the country when you are staying! Not everybody is obliged to speak English! I speak 5 languages and I wasn't complaining that somebody would not understand my Russian, it would not even occur to me to expect something like that from the people at the reception or in the shops for that matter! So get a silly book 'Italian in 30 days' or something and then maybe you will see more friendly faces. The distance from the city centre is just perfect. Especially for the New Year. Capodanno (the 'Italian' New Year..) is really crazy in Florence! :) But what an experience. Just a few minutes away are all the museums, galleries and other famous landmarks, the distance to the Boboli Gardens is not a feat either, just maybe a 20 minutes walk.Absolutely stunning views from the Michelangelo Square on the city and the Arno river. Again, thank you, Sergio, for such a beautiful stay, for the care and everything else! If I hadn;t fallen ill for a few days, i was amazed, it's the only place where the maids were ready to do a total makeover of the bedroom every (!) day. Ciao e molte grazie!

weekend in Florence
Great location, good friendly staff, Breakfast average, the room 11 was stuffy , mattress uncomfortable. the Shower did not work properly , mainly cold water,They dont tell you unless you ask, but Parking is free on Sundays ..............................................................................................................................................................

budget accomodation that does the job
Myself and my husband stayed in il Granduca for 5 nights at the end of july while visiting florence. The hotel is in a quiet area approx. 10-15 minutes walk max from the duomo which suited us perfectly. We intended to spend the entire time sightseeing so just needed somewhere to sleep for the night so cheap and cheerful was the main thing. The hotel is nothing fancy, quite basic, cheap and clean accomodation which is perfect for our needs. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient, good sized room clean and comfortable with air con, lift to all floors. Our shower wasn't working very well when we arrived as the shower head appeared to be clogged but the staff fixed it and replaced the shower head straight away so no problems. The breakfast is extremely basic, but did the job for the days we didn't want anything particularly substantial. Location is perfect, close to all the sights, everything within a 10-15 minute walk or so. When we arrived we got the bus from SM novella as given in the instructions on the website, and a taxi back to the station when we were leaving which cost around 10 euro. We did walk it to SM novella one day to go on an excursion and it took about 25 minutes or so, so easily walkable from the station if you don't have a lot of luggage and don't want to take a taxi/bus. Other than when we had luggage, we didn't need to use buses or taxis as everything is close by. Overall the hotel is a good value, clean, budget hotel and we had a lovely stay. Would stay again.

avoid at any cost
this hotel is a total disappointment. "charming antque furniture" means old metal frame beds with sinking springs and thin mattrasses, probably as old as furniture. rooms are always full of mosquitoes, against whom some smelly substance is being used. breakfests are poor, they charge separately for real coffee, and this morning when asked about boiled eggs, the owner said that "eggs finished." free wi-fi is nearly non-existent in our room. and water pressure is extremely low in showers.

Comfortable hotel and an excellent value
I stayed 12 nights in March. The staff was friendly and accomodating, the room was clean and spacious, the breakfast was just right, and the walk to the attractions was well worth the modest rate. Ms. Rudina speaks excellent English and Mr. Sergio does quite well also. They were all gracious and I enjoyed my stay very well. It's close to the bus route and I had no trouble taking the bus to and from the airport (change at SMN). Don't miss Santissima Annunziata: it's on your way to the Duomo; by day the square is a fine place to linger and the church, despite its plain exterior is amazing!
