Improved.
Well, we thought we'd give Rydges another go. This time, we stayed in a King Spa Room on the third floor. I have to say, the best floors are from 2 upwards. We breakfasted in the restaurant on both days. The selection was impressive and the food nice. Cost $27/person. The room was in good condition, no complaints. I noticed that some wallpaper repairs had been done on the basement level. The lift carpets are still stained. However, I must comment on the staff. They all were working really hard and were very attentive and professional! We dined in the Mezz Bar one night - had a beautiful plate of chicken skewers with Moroccan spice. Very tasty and reasonably priced - about $14. We had been planning to go out to dinner, but these were so nice we got two more plates. Scott, who works at the Mezz Bar, gave outstanding service. The Mezz Bar has happy hour between 530 and 630 each night. We also got room service, which was very prompt and cost-effective: only a $3.50 surcharge.

Spacious but dated
We had a 3 night stay, our room was on the 3rd floor. The room was spacious, definitely a bonus with our two children and the beds were great, really comfy. I had a few issues however - on our way out for breakfast the 2nd morning of our stay, one of the housekeepers rudely walked in as my husband and our children were walking out and she walked straight into the bathroom when I was still in there. I agree with previous reviews, the rooms are dated and the bathroom and spa bath weren't clean. But we enjoyed the buffet breakfast and dinner meals which had a great selection, and the service from the morning dining room staff is excellent, very friendly and really helpful, there were 3 staff members in particular whom I'd like to mention, but I didn't get their names.

Tired & old
Stayed here 2 nights. It was selected by the tour company. Rooms were in the "basement". They are large but very old and dated. Hallway smells like sulphur but maybe due to its closeness to the hot springs. Carpets were stained, counters worn, shower tile stained and cracked. Luggage shelf was broken. Dinning room was pleasant and the food was good.

5 star I think not
We had a wonderful 9 days in the north island ending with my daughters wedding. We were a group of 6 family and friends who did a road trip. One friend and I went to reception to book in and the reception person he obviously thought he was better than anyone else the way he spoke to us. He gave us the rooms and it wasn't what we had booked over 6months ago he was giving us a Queen and we'd booked a King suite. The friend I was with said so and asked to be given the rooms that we booked. My husband and I got to our room it was the ground floor facing the car park and didn't look like it had been used for awhile the sink and bath were stained, it was shabby. Back down to reception and spoke to someone else and we were given a better room with a balcony. I wanted to use the phone to book a Hungi & Haka evening and couldn't get on the internet to see what was available. I rang reception and got the same guy again and he said internet was down in the hotel and hung up before I could ask anything else. I rang again and said we'd like to do the Hungi & Haka and could tell me where we could go. He reeled off a couple of names quickly and again hung up. Very helpful man....I don't think. Because of him it really spoilt our stay at Rydges.

A Delightful Surprise
We were lucky to be able to book this place via Travelbug''s Secret Sale. The buffet breakfast was great. We like our room on the ground floor too. It was very spacous and clean. We enjoyed the in-room spa too :)
