Disgusting. I didn't even stay the night.
Was desperate for a night in the hillsdale area for a last minute thing. BIG MISTAKE. The 70 us dollars i paid was so so so not equivalent to what this old, dark, moldy, musty and just overall filthy room straight out of the 70's. pillows were so thin you'd think they were blankets. plus the room they assigned to me was in front of a garbage bin. i tried to lay down to rest but the noise from the thin walls of occupants was too much, and this was at 4pm. Bathroom was dirty like they hadn't serviced the room in weeks.

Walked in - and ran out!
OK, I like a good hotel deal as much as anyone, but this deal was a dog. First impressions are everything and the Hillsdale Inn had that covered. Outside the entrance, a clearly inebriated biker was holding a negotiation with a "self employed" woman regarding the rate she charged for various services - "and you pay for the room, baby" Hummmm, not exactly what I am used to hearing when entering a business hotel, maybe just not the business I am familiar with! At the front desk, there was a handwritten sign informing me that the attendant will be back in a minute. During my wait, I was graced by a spirited debate between a couple of drunks located just off the "lobby" in the local hangout bar. Bear in mind this was at 5 PM, not 3 AM. Seeing that I still had my health, I willing forfeited my non-refundable payment and left. Don't make the same mistake as I did, DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT STAYING HERE!

Don't GO!
This is a motel w/ permanent low income residents. This is NOT a hotel for travelers. It is filthy and disgusting and more than a little scary! Thankfully the women at the front desk allowed me to cancel my reservation when I was concerned about the conditions. Don't go unless you are prepared to be exposed to the darker side of life!

By far, out of the hundreds of hotels/motels that I have stayed at in my life, this one stands out as one of the worst. I booked this hotel on a third party vendor site so I didn't select it ahead of time. When got to the front door of the room, I became immediately concerned that many of the hallway (exterior) lights were burned out (this is not a good sign). It was pitch black in the hallway and quite frankly did not appear safe (see photo of burned out lights). When I opened the door, I was taken back in time to the late 1970's (that is about when this room was last renovated). The carpets were absolutely filthy dirty (see photos of some of the more prominent "stains" I found). The bathroom had a broken toilet lid and stains on the walls next to the shower (where the shower tile met the wall). I tested the Internet (wireless) and had "no bars" and was unable to connect after a few trys. The bed was so old that all you could feel the spring coils when pressure was applied. Oh by the way, NO air conditioning in these rooms and the windows are the old crank style pane windows of the 1950's - perfect for allowing the busy street noise on E. Hillsdale Rd. to filter into the room from the bathroom. They did have one of those stand alone plastic fans set up in the corner as the substitute air handler. So what happened? I called the third party travel vendor exclaming my disgust and anger that they would even entertain contracting with this deplorable property. And to give it a 2 1/2 star rating is an INSULT to a true 2 1/2 star hotel. This place doesn't even deserve a star; its that bad - really. I was able to re-book a different hotel and get out of that place as soon as possible. I have attached a few photos highlighting some of the things I was talking about here. My advice to the management of this place if they even bother to check travel reviews - CLOSE DOWN, gut the rooms and start over!

Horrific
I spent two weeks travelling around California and stayed in some great places, some bad places and then... this. The receptionist was unfriendly and demanded to see my ID although my friend had booked the room, then walked away with my passport. Just as I was about to ask where she'd put it, she came back and handed it to me without a word. The building is filthy - the pool had silt or something at the bottom, the steps leading up to the rooms were grimy and there was trash around. To top it all off, our room had an eviction notice on the door! The room stank -- and I mean, it was overpowering - of smoke. There was a door nailed shut. The windows were filthy. The carpet was stained and the wall leading to the bathroom was sticky. The remote for the TV didn't work. There were hairs in the bed, so we ended up sleeping on top of the bedclothes. To top it all off, the neighbours were doing drugs down the hallway, out in the open, until gone past 2am. The walls were paper-thin so you could hear everything. We also had a lady knock on the door and ask what we were doing, as she thought the room was empty. It turned out that the previous occupant (a tenant?) had been evicted merely THE DAY BEFORE. They exclaimed that they couldn't believe they'd let the room so quickly. It certainly hadn't been cleaned. We would have complained, but we had a flight to catch at 4am. Reception, of course, was firmly locked up. The motel came with a nice extra, though. We were asked by one of the tenants if we 'liked to party' as we went to the car. Whatever that means.
