HOTWIRE picked this so called 2 star Hotel.From the minute you squeeze your car into a parking space, you feel the sterile environment of cement everywhere.On entrance sliding door (like the ones in movies' jail cells)there is a huge poorly handwritten sign NO EARLY CHECKING BEFORE 4PM , NO EXCEPTIONS! The unfriendly host, barely speaking English, demanded my papers.The room was mediocre and smelly!WE WOULD NEVER RETURN TO THIS HORRIBLE PLACE!!

The only problem we had was with the parking. Some of the spaces were definitely not large enough. Other than that, it was fine as an inexpensive way to stay in the area - no frills, but fine.

To be fair, I will say the deal was great. We were looking for a hotel close to Sea World and this seemed to be a great fit. Eleven miles away from Sea World, just a couple mins from the freeway, and walking distance to a few restaurants. When we walked in a little after 3, I saw a sign that said check in was at 4. I was under the impressiom that check in was at 3, so when I asked the woman at the front desk she rudely says "check in is at 4 and no early check in". That's literally all she said. No "hi" or "welcome". She seemed miserable at the fact that she had to be there actually talking to customers and doing her job. I told her we would be back after 4. she didn't seem to care. When we got back unfortunately she was still there and still looking unhappy as can be. I went to the counter and she didn't even say a word. I asked what she needed from me to check in. She replied and her reply was all she said the whole time. Our last night there, the man at the counter was pretty much the same. We will never go back to that hotel because of the service. That's too bad because price was great. Would only recommend if you don't mind bad service.

Maybe I was expecting too little, but was pleasantly surprised. Much more than I expected. Nice rooms, nicely appointed.

Let me preface this review but saying that over the last 2 ¿¿ years I have stayed at the La Mesa Travelodge numerous nights. I was a very good guest and tried to make this hotel my home away from home. I have over looked the rude and really, really bad attitude of EVERYONE who works/runs this hotel because it was a clean, reasonably priced room in a semi-decent area that was very convenient for us, as it is not too far from our family. That being said is what makes this whole recent nightmare even more unconscionable.My Mother-in-law fell gravely ill suddenly, so being as we live in Reno, NV, my husband raced down to be with her in the hospital. I booked a room for him at the La Mesa Travelodge for 4 nights. Unfortunately he stayed at the hospital night and day and she passed after 3 days. The room was never used but I paid full price anyway. No problem. Due to timing restraints with the church and mortuary it would be a grueling 12 days before she could be buried. My husband drove the lonely 10 hrs back to Reno, where he and I then made the 10 hr trip back to La Mesa with very heavy hearts the following week. I again reserved a room at the La Mesa Travelodge for the night of the viewing and then the next night after the funeral. We drove all day (10 hrs) to make the 4:00 pm start of the viewing. We arrived at the La Mesa Travelodge at 3:30 pm, exhausted, grief stricken and full of anxiety, anticipating this very sad event with just 30 min to change and get to the funeral home right down the street. There is a sign on the front door that does say ¿¿¿check in @4:00 pm¿¿¿No exceptions¿¿¿. Seeing this sign I had no choice but to enter and ask the familiar desk clerk if there could be an exception since it was only 30 min and I was a repeat guest for the past 2 ¿¿ years. Oh and not to mention paid full price for a room the week before for 4 nights that was never used. Needless to say I was greeted with the same horrible customer service, as always no smile, and the¿¿¿ look¿¿¿ like they are doing you a HUGE favor by letting you stay there. She said no but we could use the employee restroom to change. This is 30 min from check in. I was taken back as I was certain this would not be a problem to check in 30 min early given the circumstances. After much pleading, admittedly and understandably I became annoyed and stated that the reviews on Trip Advisor were correct about their horrible attitude. The desk clerk immediately became hostile and told me my reservation was canceled since I threatened her with trip advisor????? My grieving husband mentioned again that his mother just died, we are trying to make her viewing and only 30 min early to check in. The desk clerk¿¿¿s comment was ¿¿¿we all have problems¿¿¿my grandmother just died¿¿¿. Unfriendly words were exchanged on both ends and needless to say we had to scramble to find another room for the night. The bright news is that although they act like they are the only hotel in the area that is not the case. We went right across the freeway to the Holiday Inn where we were greeted with a huge friendly smile, a bottle of water each and a much nicer room. I have NO idea why the family that runs this hotel are so miserable and unhappy but ¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿¿We have found a NEW home away from home.
