A little piece of heaven
This is our 3rd summer we have stayed at the Fairmont to kick off the summer. Our kids love the location (17, 13,11 year olds) and we love that they are happy! We also love the service and rooms. From the minute you walk into the lobby you are met with a wave a calm. Check in was very smooth, our rooms were ready and located in the Ocean view wing so we had fantastic views of the sea. Our location was on the 5th floor- high enough up to have a view. Fig is a wonderful place to grab a bite to eat. Both mornings our server was very attentive and the food inventive and excellent. We had great massages and the only problem was that I only booked 60 min instead of 90. Sheer bliss. My husband used the new "Beach Club" with the kids. He said it was fantastic, super easy, a Jeep picked them up at the front door and dropped them near the beach. We helpful for all the beach gear they were carrying. A quick call and the driver was back to pick them up! Beats walking with all the gear. We took advantage of the free bike use both days. Such a great perk- although bikes are available for rent just on the beach from the hotel, it really was nice to just jump on a bike right from the hotel. We will be returning!

An old lady in need of a facelift, (they do that in LA)!
I have just returned from a week in the Fairmont Miramar in Santa Monica. This used to be one of the grandest of hotels in Santa Monica, but sadly has seen better days. The entrance and lobby are very nice and it's impossible not to be in awe of the fantastic tree the hotel was built around in the entrance, simply one of the most impressive trees I have ever seen. This trip was mainly business and a bit of family towards the end of the week to celebrate my nephew graduating from high school. My problems started when I was shown to my first hotel room on the 9th floor. It was small, furniture had seen better days, but clean and might have sufficed if it were not for the vibrating engine sound emanating from the ceiling above. I called the reception and they sent engineering up. The engineer heard the noise, agreed it was terrible, disappeared and discovered that there was a huge air conditioning fan directly above the room. It would be impossible to turn off, so I requested a new room. All I asked for is a decent sized room, that was clean and quiet. The next room was much larger, (I could actually fit my bag into the closet), on the first floor at the back and I was told would be quiet. The furniture in the room really was in bad condition with veneer lifting off the top of the sideboard where too many ice buckets had been left over night. The room looked clean and as it was already quite late, seemed quiet. I woke the next day when the phone rang. I reached for the phone and got a dial tone, it wasn't my phone but next door's. He wasn't a happy chap,(whatever was going on with that call), and I could hear every word. The walls were very thin. I got up and went into the shower, and after showering, reached for a neatly folded towel. This is when, in my 20 years of staying in business hotels of all types, I had an experience that repulsed me. I opened the towel to discover a huge urine colored stain in the middle of the towel. Thankfully I hadn't started to dry myself, I quickly threw the towel on the floor and reached for a different clean towel.I approached the front desk, towel in hand and explained to the manager all of my woes, ending with the repulsive stained towel. He was very apologetic and genuine in his horror of what had happened to me. He immediately arranged for me to be moved to a bungalow room. These rooms are very nice, situated in the garden, and definitely an upgrade from anything I had seen so far. Apart from glaring huge things like the towel, small things can also be a disappointment. In the new, upgraded bungalow room, the bath tub used to be a Jacuzzi style tub with jets. At some point the motor must have broken and instead of replacing, the jets ere just covered up with plugs. Generally, the upgraded bungalow room would be what I would expect as a standard room, but that's a preemo room in the Miramar's view.Noise. The Bungalow Bar is a hip new bar that the hotel has in the front of the hotel. On Saturday night there was a line of young hopefuls trying to get in that wound around the building. My 75 year old mother who had a room overlooking the front, could not sleep. At 1am she called down to complain, the solution was not to have the bar turn music down and calm things, (I mean there making money right), the solution was to give my 75 year old mother a pair of ear plugs...I kid you not! The next day my mother was wrecked, and had an 11 hour flight to look forward to.Another annoying thing came on Thursday night when the whole front of the hotel was rented out for a function. All valet was moved to the side of the hotel and no guest was allowed to use the main entrance. when I pay for a hotel, I expect to be able to use the main entrance at least! This apparently is a repeated complaint by people. I understand making money on events, but that's what conference rooms and banquet halls were made for.Food. The food is generally very good and the Fig restaurant at night is re

Massage Envy
We have been frequent guests at The Fairmont Miramar over the years and enjoy Fig for our dining experiences. The rooms are always first class and the staff is pleasant, warm and welcoming. The highlight of our visit this trip was the massage at the spa. No doubt that Les offers the absolute BEST deep tissue massage--and the spiritual massage to go along with the workout. It was full body and full mind regeneration after a long run along Ocean Avenue. The perfect way to complement a workout and enjoy the surroundings of Miramar and the spa.Whether staying on the property or visiting around town, the massage by Les at Exhale breathes new life and energy into your body. It's a sure way to restore your body and soul.

A PLEASANT OLD AUNT
Tired after the long flight to Los Angeles and then a hectic taxi ride into Santa Monica, it was a great pleasure to find we had been upgraded to a Room with a View, and what a view overlooking the Santa Monica city and Pier, especially if the cool Sea Bloom does come in frequently. The hotel rooms are tired and in need of a serious refurbish or if kept will soon become "classic period of the time". The hotel is however ideally situated for a short stay, where one can just step out of the door and be in the main shopping area, visit the Farmer's Market on a Saturday morning or take an evening stroll along Ocean Boulevard. Rooms are spotless and beds are comfortable and guarantee a good night's sleep with bed linen and towels of good quality. Given the age of the building, the bathrooms as add-ons, though very tight are serviceable.Toiletries are pleasantly perfumed and useful.Food is served in the main Lobby and Bar which leads off to a tiny garden edging on to the Swimming Pool. The Menu is pretty limited but makes up for that by being good, the Flatbread is outstanding. The Fig Restaurant for either Breakfast or Dinner is a bit of an ordeal. The noise level must surely be higher than permitted, but it seems to be the thing to try and shout louder than everyone else. Service is swift and efficient, in the Lobby though it does tend to lag. Alternatively just order Room Service where the menu tends to be better or if you have experience in Food and Beverage apply for a job and give the place a good shake up.The main Lobby is very attractive with beautiful flower arrangements and a great place to meet friends, the Concierge staff delighted to help in any way they can to share their Santa Monica with you. There seems to be an open Party organised on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in a Marquee on the property but the hundreds of noisy people there seem less a problem than the din in the Fig Restaurant.

Always consistent and love the Banyan tree entrance!
A quick trip to LA this week. Miramar is always a favourite when staying mainly on the West Side. Staff is always courteous, rooms are always clean. Bathrooms need a bit of a facelift, but all in all a great value in a usually over priced market. Looking forward to my next visit.
