Wonderful location overlooking golf links and the sea
We have just returned from a two day break at this hotel. The location is wonderful, in a quiet area overlooking the sea which could be reached by walking over the golf links just in front of the hotel. The lounge and restaurant and bar rooms have huge windows looking over the links and the sea to the Bass Rock, island of May and other smaller islands dotted about. We had a room on the first floor which was very large with huge bay windows overlooking the links and the sea. Very relaxing just sitting and sipping our complimentary bottle of wine watching the birds and the walkers, golfers and the sea. The staff at the hotel were extremely friendly and helpful and the breakfasts were of a good standard. We ate in the restaurant in the evenings and were very pleased at the quality and standard of the meals. The hotel is within North Berwick and within walking or short driving distance of the main shopping streets, harbour and beaches, not to mention the very interesting Seabird Centre and cafe overlooking the bay. There is also a station on the main line at North Berwick giving easy access to Edinburgh. We also enjoyed a couple of spa treatments and unfortunately did not have the time to enjoy the jacuzzi which is again located overlooking the links and the sea with a swimming area outside. To be recommended.

Made our celebrations special
My wife and I spent a night here and then caught up with family for a celebration birthday the next day. We'd checked out then phoned the hotel hours later to ask if a group of us could come for a late lunch - no problem!The guys set out a private lounge for us, offered a choice of menus and looked after us extremely well for the next few hours - above and beyond the call!Nice to see the staff of a sizable chain going the extra mile for a small family group.

Can't get the staff!
The restaurant and the spa are really worth a visit but the hotel itself is inefficient and in my opinion refurbished on the cheap. It was almost impossible to get a drink at the bar, despite staff chatting down the other end of the room - the same was when I tried to get a coffee in the afternoon. For such a beautiful location this hotel leaves a lot to be desired

Do not waste your money!!
We have just stayed in this hotel for one night with friends.First impressions on arrival. Only one receptionist who was preoccupied with wedding guests (who weren't checking in). We, and our friends waited for fully 10 minutes to check in.Needless to say our rooms were not ready after eventually getting (the only) receptionists attention.We both took early retirement and we are very lucky that we can travel fairly frequently. We found this hotel to be grossly overpriced and they put a supplement on ridiculous items eg kippers at breakfast. Where in the world do you pay ¿¿2.50 to have something as basic as kippers?????The bed was far too small. Goodness knows what the Americans must think. The double bed was a single in the US equivalent.The staff were all very nice and helpful, although on observation, were completely disorganised at times.On a final note. Our bill in the morning was totally wrong and took 30 minutes to sort out.After this experience in a McDonald Hotel, we will not be staying with you again.To sum up......overpriced & disorganised staff and a tiny uncomfortable bed in a cramped room.

Superb Spa Experience
If you are looking for a fabulous spa experience look no further than the Macdonald marine hotel, we visited yesterday myself and three friends for the afternoon tea package, the afternoon tea alone was worth it, where we were treated to the most tempting cakes and scones, the relaxation room was so quiet and peaceful, and the views whilst we were having our afternoon tea was breathtaking, the staff were attentive and made us feel very welcome, we enjoyed the experience so much we have already rebooked for June.
