We stayed at the Luabay at the end of April and quickly realised that we'd been here before - it had been refurbished and rebranded from the 'Florida'. I have listed positive and negatives below for 'ease of reference':Positives:* Great evening entertainment* Most of the staff were friendly and extremely hard working* Rooms cleaned and fresh clean towels left each day* Good mood lighting and nice atmosphere in both the lounge (which was fairly large) and the entertainment room* Meal times very good - breakfast from 7.30am til 10am and evening meals from 7pm to 10pm* Good location if you want to visit Loro Parque only a stone's throw away - (Adults: 30 Euros) but too far from resort centre if this is what you want* No one seems to have mentioned the 'deck' area which we thought was a lovely addition with modern rocking chairs and nice black wicker sofa's - a great place to chill out.... now for the Negatives :(* Biggest 'neg' was food hygiene - with one of the Chef's when 'cooking on demand' used the same pair of tongs to turn raw chicken and pork as he used to place cooked meat onto plates! Begs question as to what food hygiene is like behind the scenes?* Dismayed to find the mini fridge was locked and you had to pay for it - bit mean we thought!* Internet - charge for WiFi - why? when we accessed it free in Bars and at McDonalds - another 'mean move' by the Luabay * Air Conditioning - inadequate to say the least - we slept with the door open but beware of the mossies!* Bar staff friendly EXCEPT the grey haired chap (about in his mid-50s) who was extremely rude to say the least - we avoided ordering drinks when he was on duty!* Lifts are a tripping hazzard - there is a 'step' between lift floor and landing areaGeneral Comments:We had a room at the top of the Hotel overlooking the mountains which was very nice, however please be aware that this Hotel is in quite a built up area so if you want a quiet relaxing location, this won't suit you but if you are content for a bit of noise you will find if you take into account the above that you will have a perfectly 'adequate' holiday. We have just returned from a week's half board stay at The Luabay hotel in Puerto de la cruz.On first inspection we were disappointed with our room as it didn't have a sea view.The room itself was adequate and the hotel in general was in good condition.However when we visited the drab dining room and inspected the buffet food we were left disappointed in the standard of the food.which was the same very day.We were then even more surprised to see so many Germans in the hotel,luckily i am fluent in this language but most weren't keen on conversing with me once they knew i was British.The actual resort was quiet,boring and the beach had a shocking black coloured sand.Everytime i went to the beach my feet were as black as if i had just gone down a coal mine bare footed.Our rep from Thomson's who met us at the Santa Cruz airport gave us misinformation and we had to pay for our transfer via taxi to the resort hotel.It was clearly stated that we had paid for this transfer by mini bus but they fobbed us off,luckily we kept the taxi receipt and claimed our refund.All in all i have mixed feelings about the hotel,staff need training and a barbeque might be afforded in the summer since the upstairs area was under used by sunbathers.

This hotel was lovely the staff where help full and friendly, the buffet food was good but not great but still we found something to eat every night and my gf is very fussy. Its in a great location for the loro parque you can walk from the hotel and you can walk into the town in 5 minutes. The little bars outside are ,much cheaper for drinks than in the hotel.The entertainment was actually quite good and funny for a change, I would recommend this hotel for a nice relaxing break.

Please be aware this is NOT a 4 STAR HOTEL. We checked in on 4th of April on afternoon and by evening desperately we rang Thompson to find us another hotel. The Luabay Hotel was full of over 80 years old German people, blood pressure machine in the lounge area, the pool is surrounded by blocs with flats, NOT HEATED POOL, NOT FREE INTERNET, our room 202 was claustrophobic, urine smell, small balcony, no mirrors¿¿¿¿¿¿basic 2 star hotel. The food was appalling, bland, cheap quality, dry, horrible ¿¿¿.. served by rude and unfriendly staff. Even the coffee was awful so we went one of the mornings in the bar area to pay for an espresso coffee, the bar person started to swear in Spanish language when we asked for some milk and he charged us extra for milk¿¿¿.we were shocked Thompson found us another hotel for extra cost after 2 days, no transfers to the new hotel and not a very efficient service.

I stayed at Luabay for one week at the beginning of April. I booked the hotel with the tour operator not expecting to find a four-star, and it was not, but it was a very good three, and for the price, I was not complaining. Upon arrival at the hotel, I was asked to leave my case with reception, and was directed straight to the restaurant prior to check-in. This was because the restaurant was due to close at ten o¿¿¿clock, but food had been prepared for late arrivals. I was given a meal which consisted of a selection of cold meats, salad and fruit which, though not my idea of a typical evening meal, was perfectly acceptable given that I arrived in the hotel at nearly ten pm, and would not have been able to eat anything more substantial at that time of night. After the meal, I checked in, and went to my single room. Admittedly, the single rooms are small, and have no balcony. However, I do not go on holiday to sit in a bedroom for the duration, and I knew there was no balcony when I booked, so it really did not matter. On the plus side, my room was on the tenth floor, so it was very peaceful. I found the hotel very clean and in good repair, and my room was made up every day. Contrary to some reviews on this site, I found the hotel staff to be very pleasant and helpful, so I can only assume that either I must have met different staff to those which other reviewers encountered, or perhaps the staff simply reacted in kind to my attitude towards them. The food in the restaurant was always hot, and there was always plenty of choice, so no complaints. The only slight issue for me was the entertainment, which was geared towards older people, but again, I knew what to expect when I booked and, as there were plenty of pubs and restaurants in the vicinity, I knew I was not confined to the hotel and I did venture out several times. The resort of Puerto De La Cruz is very pleasant, and the hotel is well situated, the beach being no more than a five minute stroll away, and the fantastic Loro Parque within ten minutes walk. All in all, I would be happy to go back to the resort and the hotel, and I would recommend it to others.
