The only complaint I have about the Excelsior is that when we visited they were doing renovations so the common areas were messy and noisy. Of course they did not tell us this before we arrived. That said, the service was excellent. Due to the inconvenience of the renovations we were offered a complementary breakfast, a 9 euro value. Also we could not get our air conditioning to work and they came and fixed it right away. The room was cozy, but big enough facing the courtyard with big windows. It had an interesting decor with a very comfortable bed and very adequate size bathroom. The breakfast had lots of choices including scrambled eggs, several breads, good coffee, meats and cheeses and yogurt. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. This is a very good value at the Internet rate of 99 euros and is right in the center of Nice, close to many attractions like the beach, old Nice and the Chagall museum, and many restaurants too.

Stayed here for a week late march 2013,our booking agent did not warn us that the hotel was undergoing a programme of renovation starting october 2012, we were given a room on floor 1 [not renovated] while flloors 2 and 3 were being renovated,hence having to put up with the banging,hammering,disruption and dust that go with building work from 6.30 am when the skip wagon pulled up on the road beneath our room to noisily drop a skip, to the sounds of the men filling the skip with old baths, toilets, doors etc and breaking them up with a sledge hammer.Our room was functional but very tired looking and feeling, hence the modernisation programme i suppose.On the plus side the staff were excellent and very helpful and approachable,the manager apologised and said that they had notified the booking agent about the works programme in advance of the works commencing.[pity the agent failed to inform us] The continental breakfast was quite nice,bread, ham,cheese,yoghurts,croissants,danish pastries,tea coffee etc.I was informed that the hotel was closing for 2 months shortly so that the bottom two floors could be modernised but this didnt help our cause, so i would advise anyone travelling to the hotel in the near future to check out the situation there.Once the works are completed i am sure that it will be a lovely place to stay,it is a beautiful building,in a good position,a stones throw from the railway station,15 minute walk to the beach and promenade anglais,5 minutes to tram stop which travels into Nice and out again all day [1 euro 1journey any length],or 4 euros day pass [as many journeys as you want all day on tram or bus] buy tickets from machine at tram stop and verify them in machine on bus when each time you board. Dont book a taxi from the airport for your transfers [60 to 80 euros return approx] the number 99 bus terminates at Nice railway station and 83 bus in Nice town centre,takes about 15 minutes, runs every half hour,the bus stop is 50 metres away when you come out of the airport terminal,the cost is 4 euros for which you get a day pass bus ticket which can be used for the rest of the day on bus or tram. Nice is a lovely city, throbbing with all walks of life,some really dodgy looking characters around the hotel blocks,but no trouble whatsoever,they seem to get on with their lives and let you get on with yours. I would recommend using the train, some places just down the line that we visited and thought were lovely were eze a perched village with panoramic views of the coast and lovely japanese garden and church,villefrance sur mer with harbourside restaurants and lovely cobbled backstreets and shops [this one is a must] and of course monaco/monte carlo,there are many more places to see if you have the time.On the minus side Nice and all around are expensive,[i like a beer or three] the first drink i bought there,a pint of lager with a 2inch frothy head [so probably threequarters of a pint] cost me 8euros 30 cents in the Cafe du Leon on the main street [ GULP] only had one !,the average you will pay for a pint is around 6 to 7 euros in a bar. Hope this revue has been helpful,have a good holiday.

Lovely stay.Near the train station.Nice walk down the main street to the beach.A very kind staff member gave me a French power adapter after I forgot to get one.Wifi.Great beds and pillows, and a wonderful breakfast.

This hotel is mere yards from the train station (which is not the greatest area) but was surprisingly inexpensive. The rooms were very comfortable, the staff attentive and the optional morning breakfast well stocked and a good value to start each day.

We stayed here last month and chose it due to its proximity to the station and it was only a 15 minute walk to the restaurants and bars in the old town.Very friendly staff who spoke English, fantastic continental breakfast with good coffee on tap. Rooms were small but adequate - only complaint in our room was the WC, no room to swing a mouse!Overall though a lovely hotel and would stay there again.
