The Sandviken Brygge Hotel was located just outside the main city, but we used the bus which was a very short ride. The room was small but clean and we didn¿¿¿t might the size. We felt a like disappointment towards the breakfast. It was great¿¿¿¿¿¿..but same time not horrible ¿¿¿ it would have been better.

Nice and clean hotel, breakfast ok, rooms on the smaller side- we had two beds- but they were just centimeters apart. Easy access to the city by bus. Bus stop just outside. Everything you need for a reasonable price.

This hotel is NOT in the Bryggen tourist area of Bergen. We arrived in Bergen in the evening and couldn't find anyone who could tell us how to get to the hotel. No one answered the hotel phone number we had gotten with our online reservation. We walked to Bryggen, and then people told us all different ways to go, up and down, left and right, near the harbor, over the mountain, down the stairs, through the tunnel. We walked and walked on the steep hilly streets, carrying our packs, exhausted, utterly lost and frustrated, until we finally met some older local gentlemen, one of whom was so kind and helpful as to walk us all the way to the hotel which is in the Sandviken area, kind of a suburb of the town. We would NEVER have found it without him!!! (Thank you, Per Johansen!)If you want to stay here, take a bus from near the station. We later found out that many buses go right past the hotel, about a 15 minute ride, about $5 US. Once you know where the hotel is, you can walk into the town for sightseeing, if you like walking (about 25 minutes) and the weather is good. There is not much to do and not much open late in the area around the hotel. One good thing: there's a full-size grocery store right next to the hotel if you are trying to economize on food.The hotel room was small but clean. The wi-fi did not work in our room, very annoying, and we had to take the laptop down to the lobby as there is no wired connection. Apparently there are wireless routers only on alternate floors of the hotel and we weren't on one of those floors. We were able to use internet in our room only during off-peak hours when fewer other people were online. Room was quiet overnight but noisy early in the morning as it overlooked the grocery store parking lot and there were delivery trucks and trash trucks coming and going. Someone online commented that the beds are too soft. We didn't find them too soft, but they are very bouncy. After our marathon hike to find the hotel, we slept well anyway.The hotel breakfast also got mixed reviews online, but we found it quite good. More than enough food, including juice, yogurt, muesli, very weak coffee, 2 kinds of cheese, salami, nice fresh-baked loaves of bread, hard-boiled, scrambled and fried eggs, tomatoes and some kinds of herring. Not all is great quality, but the multi-grain bread is very good. We could make cheese sandwiches to take for later, which we then supplemented with smoked salmon from the fish market in Bryggen. For a short visit to Bergen, you will probably prefer to stay right in the town, but this hotel is good for people who want to spend a little less, hike a little more, or who have a car to park. I'd have given it 3.5 stars if I could have.

This is one time where I kind of wish I could give 3.5 stars because we found the hotel staff to be excellent but there were a few things lacking which make me unable to rate this a "very good". Essentially we paid a lot of money to stay in this hotel, of course, Norway is expensive but the price is comparable to what we paid for a hotel in Oslo and we felt we got much less bang for our buck at the Sandviken Brygge. The room is small but adequate and clean. The bathroom also was tiny but perhaps the one unexpected perk of the room was the heated floor. The bed was comfortable and we had no issues sleeping. Someone mentioned having no AC but we certainly did not miss it, we just opened our window at night.There is a lovely rooftop terrace we discovered by accident by looking back at our hotel from a higher elevation. It's even equipped with lounge chairs and barbecues. However, when we investigated we found a sign stating something along the lines it is only for permanent guests. Definitely disappointing as this would be a unique perk to advertise for the hotel. (For the record, we hung out up top for a bit and no one seemed to notice or care, your mileage my vary.)Probably the biggest reason I feel I cannot give the 4 stars is breakfast was disappointing. This is certainly not the fault of the staff as the one man handling everything was going non stop but that was the problem, there was one man who seemed to be responsible for cooking, bussing the tables, refilling the coffee and juices, and replacing things as they run out, including washing dishes and bringing out clean ones as the cups and plates get used up. I felt bad for him because I felt tired just watching him. There was always something run out or gone cold before he had time to replace it. Maybe seems minor but when you are spending so much these details stick with you and this could be remedied by having adequate staffing for the breakfasts rather than a one man show.Lastly I should mention the location. It is outside of the main city center, however, I found this to be a positive. We purchased the Bergen Pass which includes unlimited public transport while the card is active and it is a very short bus ride. We actually preferred the walk in and out so long as the weather was cooperative. If you take any of the stairs up the mountain to one of the residential streets you are in for a treat, it is beautiful scenery and you can follow these roads pretty much into downtown. Also Sandviken itself has some great hiking just steps away from the hotel which we took full advantage of. Just ask the hotel reception for details and it should be easy to find.

The room was clean, but shabby, needing a good lick of paint and a freshening up. The bed was too soft and pressed against the wall and very difficult to access.Staff at the desk were very pleasant and helpful. The restaurant was not clean, poorly staffed and the breakfast buffet was limited. I stayed here because the conference I was attending was within walking distance. I would not recommend this for a holiday stay, better to pay the extra and stay in the city centre - you can put the money you save on bus fares to a better standard of accommodation and service.
