Pleasant, clean, cosy but a few issues
I booked here for the bank holiday weekend with my girlfriend. The location was good as its next to the zoo and a bus stop outside so didn't have to worry about taking the car into the city centre. Free car parking which was a bonus and all the staff proved to be very helpful and friendly. I also booked breakfast for 1 of the days I did think this was quite expensive as i only wanted a simple breakfast but u can actually eat as much as you want so u could get your moneys worth if your hungry and i did really enjoy it. The rooms were reasonably prices but were quite small or cosy and once we put our bags in it was quite cramped and had to fight for plug sockets. I found the bed quite uncomfortable and the quilt was far too small. On a plus side the view was lovely and the power shower was brilliant. My last point would be the prices at the bar are very expensive i had just returned from town where i ordered 2 grey goose vodkas and lemonade which cost just over ¿¿8 once back in the hotel i ordered a normal vodka and Malibu with lemonade this came to over ¿¿10! Overall an ok trip for what price we paid good location, nice breakfast, free parking just but of a shame about the bed and bar prices.

rooms could do with an upgrade
this was not the best holiday inn i have stayed in. Rooms a bit dated,no fridge,iron or safe.No complimentary water or biscuits..(may seem petty but it all adds to the experience)that said I did get a good deal via superbreaks so cannot really complain.If you want the Zoo this Holiday inn is ideal..but also not too bad for the city.. bus stop outside the hotel.. all the buses went into princess street (10mins) we opted for the day tickets @ ¿¿3.50 great value bus 26 went all the way to portebello beach..I chose this holiday inn instead of city centre where i have stayed before for the pool /spa.which was well worth it...Breakfast was also good.,There are no shops or places to eat right near the hotel but 2 stops away on the bus there was a good toby carvery.. Restaurant in hotel a bit pricey as always..

Inn by the Zoo
We enjoyed the location of this hotel. It is right beside a wonderful zoo...complete with Pandas. The food was really good, our waitress was Karen and she was wonderful. The location is perfect with a bus stop just in front of the hotel. The room was much larger than expected. The mattresses were in need of updating, but the over-all experience was spot on. The staff was very helpful.

A joke - holiday inn in the middle of a dodgy part of town in Africa was better than this place
This is not 4 star. Dodgy lifts, poor rooms with poor quality sheets, bathroom ok, poor service and unsavoury guests. On two of the three days there a staff member let himself in our room after one knock before 8am-9am?!?!?! I was coming out the shower and barely dressed which is completely unreasonable behaviour!!!!!!! DO NOT STAY HERE.

Rooms a little tired, but staff did so well - hotel fully booked!
Stayed here for 2 nights just before Easter 2013 with my wife in an executive room.Was debating whether to award 3 or 4 stars, but went with 4 in the end because I was very impressed by the performance of staff who were clearly stretched to their absolute capacity!We arrived on a Friday night and were checked in efficiently. It felt busy, so we asked how booked up it was. Not ONE spare room during our entire stay!This was an immediate heart-sink moment: visions of being unable to get a breakfast table, queuing for 20 minutes just for a bowl of cereal etc. sprang to mind. We needn't have worried.Breakfast WAS very busy, but there were plenty staff on, efficiently seating everyone. Replenishment of hot & cold items as they ran out was near-instantaneous. The little automatic fresh pancake making machines are a treat! Bit of a queue for those - kids mostly! But never more than a few minutes. Clearly, they are used to being really busy here and are experienced at coping with it - this alone deserves commendation.The room itself was, well, a little tired in that typical Holiday Inn way. On the smaller side, typical of a 60s / 70s built hotel, but scrupulously clean. One low point was the bed - Twenty years ago, a standard 4'6" double with a soft mattress would have been considered the norm, but really, in this day and age where Premier Inns and Novotels are all fitting quality 5' beds as standard, IHG really need to wake up. It wasn't awful - but it would have been so much better to have a slightly better bed.Plenty hot water all day and all night - not always the case when a hotel is completely full! Big plus point.On one other mention - the in-house oriental restaurant, Sampans.We were simply too tired to venture out one night, so went down on the off-chance we could get a table - but our hopes were low, knowing the hotel was full.No problem at all - we were accommodated immediately! The service from the waiting staff was outstanding and the food well above average. Indeed, it was not cheap, but neither did I feel it was grossly over-priced: just typical pricing level of any similar hotel occupying this area of the market. If you want a takeaway - pop over the road - I was quite happy to pay more for a comfy seat and good bar service!All in all then: would I stay again?Yes.For a zoo visit, it's a total no-brainer. Also - good for car-based travellers; despite the hotel being full, I never struggled to get a parking space - yes, there weren't many, but I always found one.For Edinburgh City Centre, definitely worth paying a bit more for the very much higher quality experience of Hotel Indigo - assuming you don't have a car, which would make it considerably more expensive.Thumbs up then - with a slight reservation on bed quality!
