Lunch with a view
Having never stayed at the Sandhouse, this review is for their Sunday lunch.Nobody could have any compaints about the location of the hotel as it sits on the fantastic Rossnowlagh beach. This is why, if you are booking to eat, you should request to sit in the conservatory at the back, so that you can take in the beach/sea view while enjoying your meal. The food itself is tasty, comes in good size portions and is great value for money. The staff are very friendly and efficient at attending to their guests.

Beautiful beach hotel!
This was our third trip to the sandhouse in the last year and again everything was wonderful! It's so nice to see the owner involved in the daily running of the hotel &making sure meal times run smooth! The staff are extremely professional and polite &they really give you the feeling that nothing is too much to ask. The rooms are quite old fashioned but fit with the hotel, I really don't think modern rooms would look 'in place' here. Spa facilities are also outstanding. I agree with reviews that it is quite pricey but I definitely feel you get what you pay for. When the weather is nice, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else!

Nice hotel in a lovely location
Stayed here for one night bed and breakfast at the end of April. We requested a sea view room which was provided and had wonderful views out over the beach. This is the only hotel we have stayed in where the receptionist actually takes you to your room personally. The room itself was a spacious double although there was a very strong smell of drains when we walked in. This lingered until we ran the bathroom water taps for a while and flushed the loo a couple of times. Old style wallpaper and furniture, I thought it was a bit tired looking to be honest. Flat screen hd ready tv but only local channels available. The loo roll had not been replaced by housekeeping for our arrival, the remainder of the last occupants was left on the holder. Room felt a bit cold in the evening, only the bathroom radiator seemed to heat up. Plenty of hot water for bathing/showering. Dinner was a 5 course menu with option to choose less courses and pay accordingly. Cost Euro 40 per person. We explored however and found a lovely pub/restaurant up the road so did not dine in hotel. I had a 30 minute back massage on arrival which was ok but certainly not the most relaxing I have had. Staff throughout seemed helpful and pleasant. We did have an issue with breakfast however. We went to the glasshouse restaurant where it is served from 8am till 10am. No staff were anywhere to be found and after 10 minutes we asked at reception if we could be served. Four waitresses then appeared! We gave our order for cooked breakfast and waited, and waited. Other guests arrived after us and were served cooked food long before us. we had to ask if there was a hold up or if our order had been given in to kitchen. Ten minutes later we finally got our food but not much in the way of explanation or apology for being kept waiting almost an hour. The food was quite nice. The hotel seemed to be around half full, bar was dead and we thought some music would have been a nice touch. The best thing about the Sandhouse is its location.

Fine, but seriously pricey for what it is
First off, let me say we didn't have any problems with the hotel itself, or the staff (who were excellent) - just that it is way over-priced in my opinion. We stayed here in March - two nights with bed and breakfast which cost us ¿¿¿255. Fair enough you might say, but we were expecting better for that kind of money ...The hotel itself was easy to find and the beach behind it is beautiful. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed and shown to our room. The hotel interior is very old-style - creaky stairs, old carpeting, etc, and instead of key cards we were given one (not two!) old-style key with massive key fob (seriously, I defy anyone to get it into their pocket). Some people, however, may love this old-style, rustic experience. Whatever floats your boat. The room itself was fine - old furniture (slightly stained), old-style vibe with a bathroom door that had glass paneling and wouldn't lock! I must say we had a gorgeous view of the beach. The bathroom was clean and the bed was comfortable. The restaurant was lovely - helpful staff and the food was good. It was ¿¿¿20 per main course though, which I thought was way too much - no starters or desserts included in that. I would expect to pay ¿¿¿20 or so for a steak dinner, but for chicken?! The whole thing smacked of the Celtic Tiger. We felt ripped off.All in all, the hotel was fine. Lots of minor little complaints - but I won't list them here. Basically, stuff I would overlook and wouldn't mind if we had paid a lot less.Overall, a fine hotel. Just way too expensive for what it is and we won't be staying there again.

Our favorite hotel during our break
And we'd just come from Ashford Castle--which was lovely, of course, but overpriced. The Sandhouse Hotel is reasonable, comfortable, and in a wonderful location. We watched surfers from our windows. The restaurant and bar are very nice and the staff is absolutely lovely. We will be back. In fact, we will probably choose Donegal over other parts of the country for some short breaks because of this hotel.
