Perfect for a stress free holiday with young children
Loved loved loved this holiday. It wasn't cheap but was well worth every penny. We booked through babyfriendlyboltholes.co.uk who were incredibly helpful and got us a really good deal. When we got to the resort we'd also been upgraded to a partial ocean view house (having booked a garden house). Which was a real treat. I was a bit hesitant about the upgrade at first as we'd booked the garden view house on the basis of the fact that it was stated to be 'ideal for toddlers' as the garden is enclosed. However the ocean view house was lovely and the outside space was actually much nicer than that which adjoins the garden view houses. The facilities for small children are second to none and our, then, 2 year old was constantly entertained by the toys in the pool, the kids club, and the playhouses/bikes in the 'village square'. The staff were also incredibly helpful, and I couldn't fault the customer service. The only reason I haven't given this 5 stars is that the resort is in a naturally windy bay which can make it feel a bit cool. Also the on-site deli/shop is quite pricey. Not a problem for us as we had hired a car so drove to the bigger supermarket which was only 5 minutes away but would be an issue if you didn't have a car.Overall a fantastic resort and we will definitely go back.

Absolutely lovely!
My husband, our 21 month old daughter and I just returned yesterday from what was the best family vacation we ever had!!! Martinhal is beautiful, relaxing and an absolute children's paradise :) We loved every day of our 2 week stay in the Ocean House, around the resort and on the beach!Some people complain it is windy, and during our first week it very much so was, but if you have the slightest knowledge of geography u expect that and just pack one light jacket or such ;)We also made use of the spa and it is absolutely great! Do not leave without having had at least one of the massages ;)The food was very good, if in a few cases indeed overpriced (the 20¿¿¿ fresh prawns and 10-17¿¿¿ salads as well as 12-15¿¿¿ burgers were more than worth it and also the grilled fish was delicious (!) but a panini for 12¿¿¿ is just ridiculous). Also the baby/toddler menu is a great idea! Only the prices in the Mercado supermarket are for most completely things insane! E.g. a pack of cornflakes 5¿¿¿?! That's the only thing I would really criticize! :(Staff was so friendly and more than welcoming, helpful and caring! And the cr¿¿che/kids club, fantastic! Our daughter did not want to leave the few times we left her there :))) And all the playgrounds, toys and fun possibilities for children make a parents life so much easier, making it a true family holiday resort.I am definitely recommending this place, especially for families with younger children and we will surely be back!!! Big thanks to all the Martinhal team for making our vacation so memorable and happy!!!

Very good for families, but...
I went to this hotel with my wife and our baby son. This is a hotel built for families; you should go there if you want a couples retreat or if you want a quiet place. Everything is designed for the children. The restaurants welcome children as they have babysitters, a small playground for children and plenty of high-chairs. So for us this was a perfect place to be with our son. Nonetheless this place as some flaws we wouldn't expect in a 5* Hotel. In one of the days we were there the cleaning was very bad, with the beds badly made and the shower was not cleaned. Although the staff is very friendly there were some problems with their training and knowledge of the food they were serving. For example, there is a baby soup in every restaurant. We order it but asked for one of the vegetables to be removed from the soup (peas), as our child does not eat it. The waiter told us it would be done. When the soup came it was green and the only green vegetable on the menu description was peas. So we asked for the waiter to confirm with the chef if the soup had no peas and only then the chef told the waiter that the soup was pre-maid and he couldn't alter it. 1)The waiter should have known that when we ordered it 2) If the waiter didn't know, when the chef saw the order he should have told the waiter and not prepare the soup and send it to us without any warning. If we didn't ask to recheck the ingredients with the chef our child could have had an health problem as he was not supposed to eat peas at that time.

Promised a lot but very dissapointing hotel/ resort
Five star resort that should really not be classified as lower end of a four star. We checked into the hotel after midday and found no hot water in the bathroom. I called the reception and was told to run the tap! Of course, I had done that so I was not happy with the response! I went to lunch and asked that the water be sorted as I had trvelled a long way and needed a hot shower so could they please have it sorted in 2 hours time when I would like to attempt another shower. As I walked back past the reception, I was told that the water was fixed. It was not ! So I went to the beach instead. I was told to take my own room towels and when I got there I lay down on the sun bed. In a few minutes I was told to pay for the beds that belonged to the hotel but in May they were sub let to this Company who charged for the beds and made me sign for 10 Euros to lay on the beds!! I do not recommend it for couples as the Hotel pool is not only used by Hotel guests but also by the whole apartment and villa complex owned by private owners and let through the hotel. I had lunch in their what they call the beach restaurant but all you have there is a kids playgound along the whole length of the restaurant so you are having a meal listening to kids screaming! The lunch cost us 43 euros for 2 soups, bread and one tropical fruit salad and a bottle of water ! We went to dinner at 9 hoping that it would be quiet in their other terrace restaurant but alas that is when the Spanish have their dinner and they had a table right next to ours with a baby and we had a dinner with a baby crying. All the tables have high chairs set up. I wish that the website mentions that it is Only for families with small children and toddlers. I have nothing against families, having raised one myself but atleast the restaurant could have two separate areas! At breakfast the chaos continued as there were not enough staff and we did not get offered a coffee or tea until we asked, 20 minutes after we sat down. It was very under staffed and the food in the buffet was very slow to be replaced! As I live in the Algarve now I for one will not be recommending this resort.

Martinhal is gem of a place and I loved it!
This place has the wow factor. From the moment I arrived I knew my 5 star experience had begun.Martinhal is located on Portugal's Atlantic coast right on the beach of little resort of Sagres in the Algarve.The ideal place to enjoy 300 days of sunshine a year, word of warning though can be little breezy.In the day visitors can sun themselves by the side of the central pool or take advantage of the beautiful stretch of beach and where activities such as windsurfing and yoga are on offer.Other activities include cycling *, walking and horse riding* ( *payable in the resort).A lovely resort for families or couples seeking privacy and low key in 5 star standards.The rooms at the Martinhal suit all tastes, budgets from sole travellers to groups.I stayed in an ocean view pine house with queen size beds, with contemporary furnishings all to high standards and a lovely balcony overlooking the bay. The bathroom had both shower and separate bath facilities.Breakfast was in the O Terraco restaurant overlooking the bay was fabulous with a massive choice of full English to continental and fresh fruit. The orange juice was freshly squeezed and was like nectar from the gods.Lunch is served at the pool side restaurant overlooking the sand pit area where parents can watch their children play.Other highlights include a visit to the Finisterra Spa. Tip. The products used at the spa are exclusively produced by VOYA an Irish Company specialising in products made from seaweed. They are divine and smell beautiful.Another recommendation would be to do the Jeep trip that the hotel organises with the Sagres Discovery Company. Brilliant day out in the Costa Vincentina National Park.The level of customer service was extremely high with friendly, approachable but not overbearing staff. It doesn't surprise me that couples and families choose to stay longer than 2 weeks
