We only stayed one night, but were treated wonderfully!
On our first day in Ireland (after arriving in Dublin from JFK at 6 am and quickly trying to learn to drive on the left and use the GPS !), we arrived in at the Heritage Golf and Spa Resort in Killenard. We were so early that our rooms were not yet ready, so we walked around the resort to look around. Although the outside buildings look modern, the inside of the hotel has all the personal charm, quiet elegance, and multiple comforts one could hope for, including a very grand staircase--many lovely sitting areas to read, have tea, just talk,or relax. Finally, the jet lag kicked in and I had to lay down on a couch--I was then gently awakened by an alert reception desk employee (Maria Dunne) who became the continuing "angel" on the rest of our trip! She gave me the keys to our room so we could get settled and I could take a proper nap. We were also thirsty and she personally brought us glasses of ice water with twists of citrus to refresh us. Our room and bed was very large and comfortable--all the furniture was new and rich in tone. t was easy to find everything that we needed in the closets: hair dryer, coffee/tea maker and with tea and coffee, iron, toiletries, etc. There was a large television (which we enjoyed very much learning about the local Irish news and television shows). There was one peculiarity--our bathroom was clearly intended for someone with perhaps wheel chair difficulty as the shower was an open space in the corner of the room, with a folding seat, and retractable shower head. Although we did not require this amenity, it was nice that the hotel was so well prepared for guests with disabilities.Back to Maria Dunne: she tried to help us figure out how to pay the M50 toll out of Dublin, but it turned out our credit card had a huge "block" put on it from the rental car company. With Ms. Dunne's help, I was able to call my credit company and get our level raised (our it would have been a very "restricted" trip for us financially!). We told Ms. Dunne about some of the other destinations on our itinerary and, in showing us the map, she gently recommended some other sites we might want to see. We wound up doing every single one she suggested (Rock of Dunamase, Rock of Cashel, Kinsale), and feel we have a much more _authentic_ than "touristy" experience than we might have had.As we were still very new to Ireland (and driving there!), we decided to eat dinner in the "pub" which was actually quite a grand restaurant in its own right. We had a delicious Irish smoked salmon club, an Irish ham club, a bowl of heavenly leek and potato soup, and, of course, a Guinness. Our waiter was particularly warm, humorous, and thoughtful (and he looked a bit like a young James Cagney too!). We sat in a lovely area where we could look out over the greenery where we saw many ravens, blackbirds, and other birds that I could not identify. It was very idyllic and a wonderful way to start our much needed vacation. After dinner, we took a short walk to the church of Killenard across the street-- a beautiful little local church and cemetery with meadows beyond (with cows). I took many pictures of this picturesque place complete with Celtic crosses, huge cypresses(?), hedgerows, and fields. We slept very well that night and then had the best full Irish Breakfast (of our whole trip!), the next morning. Black and white puddings, sausage, salmon, brown bread, the most-gorgeous butter in the world. I particularly fell for the sauteed mushrooms and baked beans, and my husband loved the stewed tomatoes. Plus there was fruit, cereal, eggs, all kinds of breads, etc. It was such a feast that we did not eat again until dinner that night!Although we are not golf players (so I cannot speak to their courses), we were truly pampered and coddled at The Heritage. It was a welcome, wonderful, place to land on our first trip to Ireland. We had stayed in the Ritz Carlton in Boston many years ago, but it was nothing like the feeling of being treat

Don't count on early check in.
This hotel is about an hour outside of Dublin. We took this hotel as part of a package and thought it would be fine to charge our batteries after flying overnight from the US. So after arriving at 5am Irish time, renting a car and navigating the roads, we arrived at the hotel and eagerly checked in so that we could shower and nap. Not so. We were promptly advised that the room was not ready and probably wouldn't be ready until well after 12pm. The girl at the desk curtly stated that the hotel contract states that check-in is at 3pm and we would be lucky of we got a room before that. While I understand that most hotels have a check-in at 3pm, any time I have traveled to Europe, the hotel has understood that people were flying in first thing in the morning and made every effort to check people in. Not this place. The number of jet-lagged Americans increased as the morning progressed. We kept watching people check out, but no one was checked in. After three hours, I asked if any rooms were available, and the clerk called someone and was told that no rooms were ready. I begged her to let us know as soon as she could if something changed. She never bothered to call to inquire. It was a male employee who seemed to work in the restaurant who took pity on many of us and advocated that we get keys. The hotel clerk could not be bothered doing this. When we left the following morning, the lobby again looked like a refugee camp with crying babies and weary travelers waiting for a room. Kind of surprising since this hotels participates in promotions as a first hotel after landing in Dublin. The room was clean and sufficient when we checked in at about 2pm.

Magnificent place and staff
During recent trip this was the 1st and most inviting overnight stay. The staff on arrival were so inviting after a long flight, tour of Dublin then a drive to this high end location , it made a huge relaxing impression. The friendly, helpful staff attitude is long lasting. The room was large and well appointed, so quiet even after a wedding going on the night in the hotel the day before that we slept in,almost missing the best brunch possible. Late evening bar meal was exceptional as was the service Hated to leave but loved the staff and property. Thanks for the most positive start to our trip to Ireland.Oh bathroom is like a mini spa.

Special Treat
My husband surprised me with a spa break for our wedding anniversary. When you first walk into the hotel "WOW" is the only way to explain it, amazing features and beautiful decor. Our room was incredible - huge comfy bed, stand-alone bath, waterfall shower. The Thermal Suite in the spa was a little piece of heaven - I could spend all day here!! All my spa treatments were truly relaxing and amazing but I do have exceptionally sensitive skin and I got a skin reaction to the products which cleared up reasonably quick. All the staff are so friendly and accommodating especially in the main restaurant. All our meals were eaten on the premises and the selection, presentation and taste were all fabulous.
