Old Charm - if a little expensive.
We enjoyed a two night stay at the Brown in early April. It was a great base for exploring Louisville and the hotel certainly makes an impression - the hotel lobby is really quite impressive. And as history buffs we enjoyed the hotels interesting past. The hotel offered all the amenities you would expect for a top hotel but we felt that the rooms were a little dated. Generally, we felt that a 'certain something' was missing at the Brown and we left feeling we¿¿¿d not quite got value for money.

Took my customer service issues all the way to corporate
I feel the need to preface this by saying that I'm not a fussy, impossible to please, luxury-only traveler. I began planning a Bachelorette girls' night in Louisville for my best friend in January (our stay was in mid-April). In an effort to spare you the details of this months-long ordeal and just pass along the basics, here's the jist of what happened:-The reservations process was insane. First, I was told I didn't need to reserve a block of rooms for my group of 12-20 guests, that "there's no way the hotel will sell out that night." Wrong. When guests started calling, they were told there was no vacancy. That was fixed by the manager, who materialized some rooms and held them under my name. But then, when guests called back to book, the same phone number we'd all been using wasn't working. We were later told they were experiencing phone trouble. When they finally got through, they were told they couldn't have one of my rooms unless I called and released it to them, even after the conversation I'd had with the manager. Did they expect me to personally sleep in 7 rooms!?!? -We were told that rollaway beds could be added for last minute guests at no extra charge. They tried to charge me for one. The charge was finally waved.-My husband called three hours prior to our arrival to order a mimosa service. He asked if it would be possible for it to be set in time for us to see it upon arrival to the room. He was assured by the room service manager that it was no problem. When we arrived, I asked the front desk person to please quietly and discreetly check and make sure the champagne service was set in our room (it was supposed to be a surprise for the bride!) So what does he do? Yells over his shoulder, "Hey, does anyone know if their champagne was set up!?" There goes that surprise. No one seemed to know anything about it, and it wasn't set when we walked into the room. AND the icing on the cake is that my husband was double charged for the $100 service that wasn't set up the way we asked it to be.-Some of our guests arrived at 7 pm, well beyond normal check in time, and had to wait several minutes for their room to be ready. WHY!?-On top of all of this, my card was overcharged for the stay. Not the normal amount a hotel overcharges to make sure you can cover any extra incurred expenses like they tried to claim - but overcharged by $160. I even asked if they were going to put a hold on my card at the front desk at check in time and they said no.THE HIGH POINTS: The hotel really is gorgeous and very clean. The concierge van drivers were super friendly and drove us to and from Fourth Street Live at all hours of the night. The breakfast bar at J. Grahams located inside the hotel was delicious and well-presented. A detailed email that one of the managers asked me to draft in March went unanswered. One of the managers I first spoke to seemed sincerely sorry to hear about my problems, but I could never seem to get her on the phone after that initial conversation. The other manager was rude, defensive and downright insulting on the phone. When I was finally put in touch with the assistant general manager, he was indifferent to my concerns and seemed to care less about retaining my business in the future, or making amends for my trouble in any sincere way. He offered us the champagne free of charge. Completely fed up at this point, I contacted corporate and spoke to a vice president. He finally seemed genuinely concerned by the lack of service we'd received and generously refunded our entire stay. He said he was leaving the task of earning our business back to the local staff, and suggested I wait to hear from them about how they aimed to do that.Miraciously, an offer then appeared from the assistant general manager for half off our next group stay. Very torn at this point between what I know could be a very fun, romantic stay with my husband - or could be another customer service nightmare.

Great hospitality and old world charm
A very warm friendly hotel with loads of olde world ambience. Great lobby. Nice bar. The room was quite comfortable though a view to the North would have been better I think. I thoroughly enjoyed my 4 night stay there.

Worthwhile to visit
Great old classic! I highly reccomend a stay at the Brown. One word of caution about Louisvlille though - plan your excursions beforehand. We did not and meandered the streets and although local attractions like 4th Live look nice, the town appeared dead, even at 5 - 6pm when people were getting out of work. I think they roll up the sidewalks and everyone heads to their homes in the suburbs.

A Grand Hotel
The hotel is gorgeous with its rich historical heritage preserved.The staff go out of their way to make sure your experience is a positive one.Food in the J Graham Brown Cafe and the English grill are excellent.Bed was comfy and hotel quiet at night while I was there.Too bad I had to go home.A classy place for sure! The Grand Hotel on Mackinac could (and should) take a lesson from the Brown! Bravo!
