Great stay in downtown LA.
Stayed at this DoubleTree for 4 nights in May. The rooms are very spacious and extremely modern. The bathroom is a bit on the small side but that is expected from a downtown hotel. The rooms are clean and staff is great. The location isn't the best but it works. There are 2 Metro stations within half a mile. This made getting to Hollywood and Universal very easy. I would definitely return.

Quick trip - would stay again
I made a quick trip to LA for medical care for my young child. We stayed here because our medical clinic has a special arrangement with the hotel for rates that are fairly reasonable. When we weren't at the clinic, we walked to El Pueblo, Little Tokyo and Chinatown. We used a taxi to get to the downtown medical areas (cost around $11-12). I don't go to hotels for the decor, so I thought it was just fine, even though I see others have complained about it being shabby. The bed was very comfortable and my little one slept very well (hip hip hooray). The staff was very courteous and responsive. It was the best customer service I have received at a hotel in a very long time. I had occasion to interact with the doorman, front desk staff, bar staff, restaurant staff, and the maid -- each and every encounter was pleasant, and my needs were handled swiftly and professionally. My only complaint was that, typical of Hiltons, the hotel food (meals, drinks, breakfast) were terribly overpriced. I shelled out for the convenience of not having to get out on my own in downtown LA with a small child. I expect to have to return for further medical care for my child, I would definitely consider staying here again.

Ok but not great...
I called the MOD to complain about my food on room service. The staff said he was with a guest and they would have them call me back...he never did. Room clean, staff friendly its a 3 out of 5 on my hotel-opinion score...not bad but not great.

Friendly staff, dumpy hotel
I have to say that the staff here was very friendly. The bellman outside and front desk staff were excellent. The hotel is old and dumpy though... Lobby is large, but in need of renovation. The bar area is really worn. The hall area to the elevators is weird feeling and straight out of the 70's. The elevators have graffiti keyed into the brass plates, which makes you feel like you are in the ghetto projects. The room was redone, but still remnants of the 70's come through. There is barely enough room in the bathroom to turn around. Way too small... The room had a nice desk and furniture, except for the tv stand which looked like a bomb went off in the area below it. Nice on outside, but when I opened the door, it looked like it was going to collapse. The room also had old single pane windows which made it very noisy all night and difficult to sleep.No executive lounge on property either. All in all, choose another hotel in downtown LA. The Hilton Checkers is much nicer, in a much better location and neighborhood to access downtown. I will stay elsewhere on my next visit.

In need of modernization
The initial room we were booked into was oddly shaped and had a noisy old bed (very squeaky when just sitting on the bed). Fortunately they moved us to another room, where the bed was still old, but far less squeaky. The closet in the 2nd room looked like it hadn't been maintained since the 80s, lots of paint issues and whatnot. The hotel could use newer beds, modernizing the room interiors, and restaurants/room service that stay open past 11pm. You also get to hear lots of sirens, but what else would you expect while staying in downtown LA?
