Very basic in dire need of a complete refurbishment
Booked two rooms 11th May to 13th May .One room ,329 great view over Bray to the hills, other room 322 looked on to a brick wall and shared an adjoining wall with the lift shaft. Both rooms were sad! and were in urgent need of a complete make-over . Grubby comes to mind. The beds however were clean and comfortable. Bathrooms are basic but also need attention , the taps have to run for ages to get hot water and toiletries provided consist of a small bar of soap. Breakfast was just ok nothing to write home about or even mention here. This is a very basic hotel that probably depends on bus tours or function trade not really up to the standard the casual independent traveller would expect or return.

The Royal Review
I was very disappointed with the Royal hotel as I had heard so many good things about this hotel, however, this was not the case when I went to stay. I had six people with me who were all in my care. The service was awful as they didnt have enough staff on over the weekend. Yes I understand that there was a bus tour of people there (which we were on) however, this had been booked for a while and they should have been more prepared. The tv had extremely bad reception in one of the rooms, this was reported and they had a technician come and look at it but all they could say was sorry. I couldnt have the people with me move to a different part of the hotel as they needed to be near my room.On the first night we were there I was told off by one of the restaurant staff for not phoning earlier and saying that there were 7 of us, but with this being a pre-booked tour I thought it would have been organised. So on the second night I thought I would be more prepared and book into the bar for the 7 of us as we wanted something different and didnt want to be in the restaurant. We booked the bar and were told that this was ok. Went and sat in the bar where it said was reserved. Over a 30 minute period I had to ask a girl twice could she come and take our order and she said twice she would be with us in a minuted, but never came. It took a very nice bar man to come and sort us out and take our order. He then came back about 10 minutes later to inform us that this area was reserved for a different group and there hadnt been a reservation put down for us. So we were then moved to the restaurant. With the people that I had in my care this was not ideal as they were settled where we were. Once said to the manager all we got was a simple apology. I stated that we were going out to go to another pub and he then asked did we want to go into their bar and I told him that it was said to us that it is full up. He then had the cheek to ask us did we want to sit in the lobby...I think it is obvious what we said. So we left the hotel and went to a lovely little pub around the corner and had a lovely evening.I would definately not take another large group of people to this hotel and to be honest I dont think I would return as a couple either.

Good value, nice surroundings
This is the second time that we have stayed here as we have family that live in Bray and this hotel is so very handy. This time we were on room only basis so can not comment on the food. We had a double room booked on line at the cheapest site I could find (¿¿20 each per night) so wasn't expecting one of the better rooms -but what a surprise. The view was non existent but then not having a view of Bray Main street is hardly worth getting uptight about. The room was very spacious, clean and fresh, the fixtures for a three star hotel were fine. The bathroom was clean and the shower powerful and hot the only minus point was the fact that the hairdryer did not work but I'd brought my own - so again no problem. The pool and bar make this a really comfortable place and along with the privacy offered we wouldn't hesitate in staying here again.

Dated, smelly rooms
I spent the weekend in this hotel with my mother and my grandparents, we had accompanied my grandparents on an ulsterbus tour as they are rather elderly and need a bit of help away from home. First can I say that this hotel is not suitable for elderly people at all. There is 1 very small juddery lift which holds 4 people at a push and as the tour had 98 people travelling on it, most of them 60+ this was extremely inadequate for their needs. When we got checked in and arrived at our rooms, the smell of damp that greeted us was something else entirely. The rooms were in dire need of urgent refurbishment. They looked like they hadn't been updated since the 70's at least! On the surface they looked clean enough and the beds were comfortable, although it was quite obvious there had been a bad leak in the past and the carpets and walls had been stained by this. The rooms however were tiny and the furnishings left a lot to be desired. The storage cupboard had such a strong smell of damp we were afraid to leave our bags there in case the smell got into our clothes. There was a very shabby bathroom with a shower placed over a high bath. This was totally unsuitable for my elderly grandmother who then had to do without a shower for the weekend. I asked staff if they could possibly move them to a more suitable room but I was told there was none available at the min but they would have a look and see if they could do anything. They were to get back to me but this was the last I heard from them. The next morning my grandfather couldn't get the shower turned off as I called reception and reported the problem to them. Someone came up and was able to turn it off but it was apparent this was a regular fault that was going on for sometime and instead of fixing the problem it was left for the next unlucky person who stayed in the room to complain about. The hotel was extremely noisy and although we were on the second floor we still heard the music from the bar downstairs quite loudly. On the second night the fire alarm went off for a couple of minutes at 1 30 waking everybody. The towels which we had left in the bath per instructed to be changed were simply hung up again dirty. On the plus side the bar and restaurant staff were very friendly and helpful although the dishwasher needs replacing as we did have our drinks served in dirty glasses a few times. I would not have stayed in this hotel except for the fact I was with elderly people and it would have been an upheaval to move them. I think the only reason this hotel is a 3 star is because of the leisure complex. Without it it would be lucky to be a 1 star hotel!
