Great location and fab hotel
Great location opposite Central Park, the Natural History Museum and very close to subway. This made it great for sightseeing days out. Classy hotel with well equipped spacious rooms which were really clean and fresh. Would definitely recommend as it was away from the noise of the city but close enough for a short tube journey to be in the middle of all the action. Great value!

two day break
Found this hotel very good for our break. Hotel very clean if a little old worldy. Pleasant staff and very helpfull consierge. Booked our show and sightseeing trip and both were excellent.Its very central and near the subways. Our first time in America so were really pleased with the hotel and even better we arrived early and they upgraded us to a suite which was lovely.

This hotel ticks all the right boxes but lets itself down......
We stayed at the Excelsior from 4th May 2013 to 9th May 2013. Its not much to look at from the outside but oozes character from the lobby onwards.Upon check in we got an automatic upgrade (nice) to what looked like a small suite. Room 616 comprised of a compact toilet, to the right from the entrance a sitting area with a sofa, several tables, lamps and a large unit with a 32" cable TV on it. Through a couple of double doors into the bedroom area with a massive queen bed (3 adults could easily sleep in it and not disturb each other). More seating, tables and a second 32" TV rounds the room off.We had 3 windows around the room but a side/rear hotel view-this did not matter really.So, the positives:Fantastic location, perfect for restaurants on Columbus, Amsterdam and Broadway.Zabars deli is on Broadway, fantastic! Right out of hotel, 2 blocks to Broadway take a left.Turn left out of the hotel and the Blue C subway line to go downtown is there 5 minutes walk.Turn right out of the hotel, to Broadway subway and get the Red 1 subway right down to southern sea port for the free Staten Island ferry,Right across the street is the American Museum of Natural History, great for a rainy dayVery quiet location, good sleep with no disturbances. The negatives:All really refer to the room.Toilet blocked for all 5 days, reported every day and fixed then blocked every day the following morning. Staff seemed disinterested. Disgusting.The heating/cooling system has a mind of its own, blows out hot air when you want cold and visa-versa. This is even when the wall controllers are switched off. cooked to death one night and then froze the next.Bedside phone only working intermittently.This is such a shame as it did spoil what would have been a perfect and absolutely fantastic first visit to New York.I would have no hesitation of staying at this hotel again and would pick it out of choice. It has an unbeatable combination of location, quality and value. This is extremely hard to achieve in New York. Had none of the issues occurred with the room I would have awarded 5 stars. Yes we could have moved room but could not be bothered and really liked the room.

Fantastic experience
What a wonderful way to start our trip in New York. I feel in love with this gem of a hotel and what a great size for New York. I a perfect location to great restaraunts and Central Park. Compared to other hotels this was so quiet and we had no issues sleeping. I could not recommend this hotel more highly. Lovely view of New York sky line and friendly staff made for an all round great stay.

For those in love with UWS
This is not your high end full service anything you want and could possibly need type of hotel. But if you want to spend some time close to central park at a relatively reasonable price, this hotel offers a convenient reasonable option.
