Perfect Romantic Getaway
Spent a night at the George Inn and what a fantastic place. On arrival, we were greeted by extremelly friendly staff and given a short history of the building (some of it over 600 years old) on the way to our room. Firstly were shown to the Monmouth room, which was lovely, but when we checked our reservation through Expedia, we had actually booked a four poster room. When I mentioned this to the barman, we were instanly moved with no fuss at all to the Samuel Pepys room which was even lovlier than the first room! Huge four poster, rickety uneven floorboards and lovely and atmospheric. Went to the restaurant later and the service was impecible. Were recommended a wine that wasn't on the wine list and it was absolutely lovely and very reasonably priced. Dinner was excellent and we retired to one of the lovely cosy rooms to finish our wine before heading off to the ridiculously comfy bed. Breakfast the next morning was lovely, excellent selection of cereals, fruit, juices and yogurt, followed by a fabulous freshly cooked breakfast. We would say the whole experience was faultless. Well done George Inn staff...best place we've stayed for ages.We took some photos in our room and on two out of the many photos we took, you can see glowing orbs floating around the room....not dust on lense as the photos either side of the same angle are perfectly clear....just these two in the middle, taken seconds apart, the only difference being that the one before them had my wife in itm, the one after had me in it, so the middle two were just of the bed.....spooky!! The room did have a lovely feel though, so whatever they were, they seemed very friendly!

Utterly perfect!
Oh my word - an old building that feels as if you've stepped back in time (but with the luxury of hot running water). Oozes charm and character. Olde England indeed. We stayed in the Sedgemoor with its uneven floors and four-poster bed. The bath was lovely and big enough for two - at a squash! Well, we were on honeymoon! Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, who gave us a lovely warm welcome. The pub and restaurant were amazing too. A beautiful place that has not been tarnished by idiots trying to modernise it. I hope it always remains this way.If you don't love this place, bugger off and go stay in a Premier Inn!

Oozing with history and gorgeousness and very dog friendly
Stayed two nights in the King Charles room. Plenty of room for the greyhound to stretch out on the floor - which itself had a distinctly interesting slope due to the age of the building. The George has been an inn for centuries and the whole building is wonderful. The galleried courtyard is spectacular. All the staff were helpful and friendly. We were able to have dinner & breakfast in the pleasantly appointed Dungeon as the only place dogs are not allowed in the dining room. The food is also very good. A selection of quality cereals, yoghurt and dried fruit followed by a full veggie breakfast (with tasty Glamorgan sausages) and toast.Dinner was reasonably priced - again with a good selection of veggie food.Outside there is a walled beer garden with a fabulous view over to the 14th century church. And next to that is a large field (the Mead) for playing and running with plenty of pooh bins. And to top it all off there is a resident Cavapoo called Dudley belonging to the delightful landlady. He became great friends with our own Cavapoo. So if you enjoy good food, comfortable surroundings steeped in history and never go anywhere without your pooches then this is the place for you.

very pleasant
Had two rooms here for one night , and staff did their very best to accomodate our needs . We arrived very early to go to a wedding, and they let us use a room to get changed etc and leave our stuff. Well Done. just a minor detail - cooked brekkie was great but a little more variety with the cold items on breakfast menu would be better. And the tea/coffee making facilities were a little stingy

Better than staying in Bath!
Leaving Cardiff at 17:35 should have led to a journey through rush hour but it appeared that everyone was heading to Wales for the weekend. We found the George after an easy drive - with no 'detours' - and pulled into the last space in a full car park just before 19:00. We stretched out of the car and heard a 'good evening' from a cheery ghost like figure who was carrying something in the darkness - after a few seconds I realised it was in fact a chef taking a sack to the far off bin store. Bags in hand we entered though a side door and into a room with an enormous crackling wood fire and plenty of seats and nooks to sit in, I quickened my pace to get checked in and back down to one. We closed the door behind us and opened the next and made our way to a bar - which resembled a large table - and was clearly used for everything. Having taken a glance at our bags the assumption was made that we were staying and after a confirmation of names we were taken u to our room. Abotts. ( I had paid in advance for ease)Back out to the corridor, outside and across a courtyard, past 'the dungeon' and up a flight of stairs to our room. The whole place really was old and charming, a real feeling of 'built to last'. Beams bigger than some of the windows! Bags were plonked on the beds and a hasty return to the bar was made.Having secured a pint of 6 X and a glass of ros¿¿ from the efficient and friendly barman we took a seat in front of the fire and began to fully relax. Staff and guests came and went from the bar room all at a pace that helped us both continue to unwind - A large table of 20 people arrived but were smoothly ushered out to the dungeon - I'm sure it wasn't as bad as it sounded..After another glass of ros¿¿ and a pint of wadworths bishops tipple we decided to head to the restaurant. Out through the courtyard and into another part of the hotel where we were met by a young waitress who sat us down and presented us with a menu. Now, I'm always pretty hungry and my girlfriend is not a salad lover either and we were both impressed by nearly all of the choices - making a decision difficult. We tried to spy the plates on the other tables but that didn't make the choice any easier. We eventually opted for the smoked pork and game terrine to start, followed by venison steak and a mixed grill (for her, I know!) The starters were excellent, and having asked the chef to cook the venison as he felt best I was presented with a wonderfully rare sliced steak. All plates were promptly cleared and desert was ordered sticky toffee pudding and a cheesecakeAt the end of proceedings - and really having had our fill -a half bottle of Tempranillo left over led to having a cheeseboard for two, the ghostly figure appeared again from the kitchen and drifted over to the table to discuss the cheeses with us, after a bit of persuasion on the blue cheese we agreed to try them all and after a short time a board appeared that would have beaten lesser folk. Once the cheese had been seen off we paid our bill and retired to our room.Having fallen asleep in no time at all we woke early to make our way into Bath for a morning adventure in the thermae spa. Looking out the tiny window revealed a mist shrouded church bordering a cricket pitch - which would be perfect on a summer evening to have a pint next to - less so at 7:30am in March. We left the way we had entered and saw only the chef arriving for work - strangely missing breakfast was probably the best thing that could have happened - but it does provide an excuse to return for a night in the future - which we surely will.
