A grand touch of Fawlty Towers with a smile
Had I read some of the tripadvisor reviews prior to booking, it's unlikely that I would ever have booked this hotel but I like a touch of grandeur and in that respect we were not disappointed. The old building is wonderful and our en suite room was exceptionally spacious with comfortable beds. There were also two lifts, two restaurants and a bar, with breakfast being taken in the fourth floor restaurant with the most wonderfully uplifting view of the city and the Bay of Naples. I had, however, read some of the tripadvisor reviews before travelling so arrived with considerably lowered expectations and some trepidation. After our first night, we were the first to arrive for breakfast so had our pick of pastries followed by a delicious orange and perfectly made coffees. It was not until the third day that we experienced the plastic plates described by one reviewer and I realised we were eating the same, now somewhat stale, filled croissants as on our first day. There were no oranges and the apples on offer looked well past their best.Drinks at the bar are relatively cheap, the area was dirty but nothing like as poor as described nor scary but Naples is a very poor city and there's a need to be alert at all times. Our meal in the hotel's 2nd floor restaurant was somewhat surreal. This is a beautiful room and the tables were elegantly laid, with fine tablecloths and matching napkins but each table was very far apart and blaring in the background was a large television. The food is dreadful. The hotel's position high up the Via Capodimonte improved my fitness enormously. It was an easy downhill walk to the museum quarter and then on into the shopping areas and then to the sea front or the docks and the strange quirks made us smile far more than fume but I could not wholeheartedly recommend this hotel.

Overnight in Naples
Travelling back to Naples airport last week we decided to stop over in Naples for a night. The Grand Hotel Capodimonte looked ideal as it is an eadsy wallk from their to Capodimote and the have car parking facilities. The hotel is typical italian style and very well kept. The room we had was ideal with ensuite, TV ( no English channels) adnd comfortable bed with lots of room.Unfortunatley we decided ot stay for dinne ( as there are no resutants in the vicinity). The meal was almotst inedible - "Veal" turned out the be a raw T-bone steak - nop veg extra for chips ( only a samll handful). My wife chose "Gnocchi" this turned out to be so starchy half was left on the plate. Despite drawing these to the attention of the waiter - it was simply a galic shrug and still charged full price.Breakfast was acceptable - just!FOr an overnight with no meals this hotel is OK but not very well positioned for exploring Naples. although very handy for the motorway system.

Friendly, helpful staff in a basic hotel
Stayed for one night on Friday 14 September. In a poor neighbourhood, but within reasonable walking distance of Naples old town. We had an OK room and a dreadful meal, which we put down to being the only ones eating in (we were too tired to go elsewhere) The hotel seemed empty, and since the stairwell and rooms are so large it was a bit eerie. The one good thing about the place was the staff - Reception/Bar/Waiting staff were all lovely and helpful. We were glad we had booked a different hotel for the end of our tourPS - watch out for the taxi drivers at the airport - be sure to agree a price in advance!!

Absolutely appalling
Having travelled extensively in business and personal I have to say this was the worst hotel I've stayed in. I booked via Thomson platinum and what a joke that was, travelling solo for my sons wedding and booked a single room.. I was given what only could be described as a cupboard. The room had been used by a chain smoker ( I can only assume) as it was smoke contaminated to the extreme. Having pointed this out to the reception I was told that there were no rooms available to transfer to and they would spray freshener in. This did next to nothing and I once again complained with the same comments from reception staff. I even offered to upgrade at extra cost but no joy there either. Thomson rep took the case up and was no more helpful. This holiday cost me ¿¿1450.00 for a week incidentally. My Son who was staying in the same hotel with his fianc¿¿e who had issues with his own room requested a room for two nights pre and post wedding was miraculously found one at a premium price. I would not give this hotel a 2 * rating let alone a 4/5* it is very dated in all aspects and very unhelpful.

What a Gem
A really beautiful and charming hotel - delicious food - great service and enormous rooms. Eating out on the terrace with the busyness of Naples around us was spectacular. Naples is not Sorrento and the neighbourhood was typical Naples with little neighbourhood pizzerias - and the Catacombes are right next door! Each floor in the hotel was decorated to fit the age of the building with beautiful artwork. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel - a grand hotel of a former age but with all mod cons.seejayAuckland
