Why this is a great Irish hotel
Primarily, because everyone working there whom I encountered, whether Irish or not (most staff do seem to be local), has absorbed the notion that visitors stay in a hotel like the Old Ground for a taste of the national character, to be treated with friendliness, kindness, and respect. I arrived early, well, VERY early, on a international overnight flight, and was greeted at 7:00 AM with a smile and a pot of tea. I asked for a room overlooking the lovely cathedral and garden, and was accommodated by 10:30 AM, which was much appreciated. The room was very clean and tastefully decorated, with a comfortable double bed. The hotel was full throughout my stay with visitors from far and wide for the Fleadh Nua, but the staff never seemed too busy to answer a question or make a phone call to assist a traveller. Many locals use the hotel as place to get together in town, and these were some of the friendliest people you will meet in Ireland. As a single traveler, I was made to feel welcome in some of the impromptu musical sessions that came together in the beautiful sitting rooms. One of the hotel staff was also captivated by the music (in this case an older gentleman singing sean nos) and took some cell phone video of it. When asked by another tourist why this was special, she replied, "Why, they've just come in off the street!" Sometimes, the spontaneous can be almost magical, and it was great to see hotel staff appreciating that too. There were some problems. The water pressure in the shower was simply awful, not much above a trickle. The sink did not seem to be well-connected to the pedestal beneath it. And, the breakfast was a major disappointment, was buffet-style only, and featured watery eggs and cold sausages. There was apparently an electrical problem that weekend, so perhaps that was the reason. But I would probably not book at a B and B rate next time. I think because of the volume of business that weekend, it was often difficult to get service in the Poet's Corner bar, and the room was made up rather late in the day (after 3:00 PM). The room was initially far too warm, but a call down to the desk had the heater turned off. Don't let any of this stop you from booking, the Old Ground is the genuine article, an Irish townhouse style hotel of the first rank. Ennis doesn't have a lot of marquee attractions for the traveller (although the Franciscan Abbey is remarkable), but you get the impression it's a really nice place to live. It grew on me. I hope to return.

A bit tired
We only stayed a single night and that was plenty. If this is a four star hotel, it must get it by the skin of its teeth. The hotel is obviously on the tour bus route and there were large coach parties staying whilst we were there. The room was OK but very dated and roaring hot even after turning off all the heating and opening the windows. There was no shaver point in the bathroom nor any natural light. The general areas and reception felt very bashed about.Breakfast was served in a very nice room and the food was good. There's also an odd arrangement where the hotel bar doubles as a town pub and that leads into the Town Hall Restaurant (which was very good). Not a hotel I shall be using again.

Tour Bus Heaven
Unless you're on an American tour bus, skip this hotel. Room was ragged, staff was overcome by buses of tourists, breakfast was a disorganized mess, waiting 10 minutes for eggs, had to ask for a newspaper (hint: they didn't want the tour bus group taking them en mass). Even got rammed in the parking lot by a garbage truck trying to back in. Not all that impressed with Ennis, will move on next time.

Has it all
The Old Ground has great location, good pub, excellent restaurants, and nice rooms. The staff is very friendly. The breakfast is lovely - in a cheerful dining room with linen table cloths and very attentive staff. Not the harried event at other hotels. We ate at the Town Hall restaurant which is very good. The only negative was the location of our room, whichwas in a lower outside wing. Our window opened to service area in the back of the hotel. Wehad to keep our window and curtain closed for safety and privacy. But that aside, the hotelis really nice and well worth the stay.

Rooms are tired
The rooms are tired but clean. The breakfasts is good and they will do your eggs etc. to your request. The staff were friendly and helpful. There was a pub in the hotel which was busy with good food. There is also a dining room available for guests. There were other good restaurants in the area.
