Over rated hotel
We stayed at the Russ hill hotel on a sat night in may for 1 night , thank god it was one night !, the hotel when we arrived look nothing like on the website . It was shabby ,run down and had a really musty smell . The sign wasn't either on the front of the hotel like in the picture . No way was this 3 star , lucky if 2 . We were showed to our room which was like a dungeon with a dump yard outside of an old bed and a member of staff sitting outside the window smoking !! We demandid to move room which I must say they were very happy to help with this . The shower dribbled and was cold but thank god was for one night sleep. I couldn't say way the food was like as the Resturant looked like a canteen so found a nice pub called the half moon which I would reconmmend , . So no I would not reconmmend this hotel !!!

Cheap and does the job.
I stayed here for one night with my partner before an early morning flight from Gatwick. I found the hotel on a search engine as I needed somewhere to park the car while I was away and of course, as cheaply as possible. (Dont we all!)We arrived on the Monday evening of a Bank Holiday at around 9.30pm and parked up just outside to check in and sort the car out. Outside I can see the old charm that the place must have once had and it's pretty big. Several people have mentioned the musty smell inside and yes it was a bit old smelling in the large reception area but hey, the hotel is old and we didnt find it too offensive. Check in was quick and we were told to find a parking spot in long term. It wasnt too long until we found a place. Staff were alway very nice and efficient. There arent marked out parking spaces for cars and I think it's goverened by common sense to be honest. If your car doesnt fit in the gap or you're likely to block someone in etc then dont park there! We had a short walk back up the gravel to the hotel and found our room. This was a bit of a maze but a breadcrumb trail isnt necessary, pretty good directions. The room was okay. I wouldnt really want to be here for longer than one night to put my head down. The musty smell was behind us in reception but the first thing I noticed when I walked in was a footprint on the yellowish wall, toes and all! The cleaners couldnt have missed this and I imagine it would put a lot of people off. However, bed linen and towels were clean and we'd be getting up at 4.30am anyway. Back out for a quick glass of wine before bed and the restaurant/bar was very busy! Lots of older couples (50's/60's) who seemed to be having a great evening and didnt seem to be there just to put their heads down like us. Had a pretty decent sleep and we were picked up by the hotel run airport bus at 5am on the dot. It cost ¿¿5 each return and the drivers were always very friendly on each journey which took about 20 mins. All in all it was cheap, car was in one piece when we got back and it was fine. Ive battled between a poor rating and an average rating but have gone with poor because of the footprint. I cant be fairer than that but for one night to put my head down I would stay again. You get what you pay for which was a room for two (no breakfast) and parking for 4 nights for around ¿¿60.Id look other places again but would possibly stay again.

Could do better.
Booked over the phone, directly with the hotel, got booking reference. I did ask for a room with a bath, as to just a shower. I was advised that this request was honoured. THEN, I looked on Tripadvisor. Read reviews posted on this site, I telephoned the hotel again. The phone was not picked up for over 10 minutes, so I hung up. I rang again, waited over 10 minutes, but was eventually answered. I told the receptionist of my booking reference, and that I had read the reviews. She said that she was aware of the reviews, and with this in mind she had changed my original room that I had booked earlier. She told me that it would be better for me?The hotel looked good, as I drove up. A large country style building- large car parks. They looked full, but I was able to find a space. The lobby, and entrance are spacious,.Russ Hill hotel seems to have a loverly old world feel. Check in took over 15 minutes, one receptionist, 3 couples in front of me. I could here talking and laughter from an office near the reception. No welcome given by the receptionist- asked only for my booking reference, my payment. I was issued with my key/s. No directions given. Not advised of facilities, dining/bar area, or how to get to and from the hotel- zero.My room- generally good, clean, modern.I could however here some one snoring in the next room.Aircraft taking off and landing could be heard as a gentle back ground noise, nothing to intusive for me in a ground floor room. The link corridors, tired, battered decorations, scuffed skirting boards. On returning to reception- waited again, to request an "alarm" call. Advised to set the TV, and my mobile phone, as their system might fail!!!!!.The bar area was busy, my sandwich and cup of tea arrived quickly- both of good quality, and reasonably priced. The menu is of good standard, and seemed to please many of the guests. The big plate glass windows that gave a view of the early evening sky, the lawned and tree lined gardens, needed cleaning. All visitors to the bar area looked out of these windows- this area could have been easily improved by employing a window cleaner. I did use their computer- slow, but reasonably priced- the printer had a sign on it, broken. The price for room only, and overnight parking ¿¿29-00pI feel that the location could not be improved. Perhaps in the future the hotel could be made to be much better. At present it does not live up to it's potential.

Don't know why the negativities for a simple-cheap hotel, which is suitable?!
It really annoys me when people put up really bad reviews when they are really not necessary! To some up - The Truth is that it is simple.cheap and suitable. That's it. Ok so it isn't the Ritz, however when u have just spent a lot of money on a holiday and u need a hotel for the night and parking which is affordable then you really can't go wrong with this. When I read all the bad reviews we were very tempted to cancel and book elsewhere! When we got there, yeah thedecor is dated and smells a bit funky, the staff were friendly, parking was easy and check in was quick.we had more than 1 socket in our room and it was clean!! Seriously don't let people put u off! Also shuttle bus is on time and gets you to airport with plenty of time to spare!! You can't hardly hear the planes!! I love it when people pick up on really small stupid things to maor the place sound like a dive!! Happy holidays!! Fyi stayed 1 night 2/3/13

It simply does the job!
me and my girlfriend stayed one night before a morning flight to morocco, and although you read many bad reviews, there isn't really anything wrong with it. i would not stay more than one night, but at ¿¿75 for a room and 8 nights parking you cant complain! the room was down a lot of corridors but signs were clear, the room was a decent size double. the only window was in the roof but the bed was comfy and the shower was hot! that's all i wanted from the room. the bus picked up from outside the front door but isn't that regular, so plan it in advance! really, it did the job, was not unpleasant and i slept well!
