Pleasantly Surprised
I booked this hotel on the Internet as a place to stay following a long trans-Atlantic cruise. We arrived in Lisbon early and had an 8 am tour of the city. I arrived at the hotel at noon, but no problem. Although a few hours early for signing in I was welcomed and escorted to my spacious room. A hot shower was a delight, and then the hotel called a taxi for me to reach a wonderful shopping mall. Everyone was as friendly and courteous and hospitable as could be, and eager to use English to communicate. I slept so well that night that I didn¿¿t awaken until 9 am! Breakfast was still available and buffet style, with a seemingly endless array of culinary delights. Internet access was good and provided without charge. I would certainly stay again at the Barcelona if I return to Lisbon.

All that we needed
Despite previous reviews stating that the staff were not helpful, we found this not to be true - the front desk was very friendly. The room was clean, everything worked, and I have no complaints. We were on a layover for a flight with TAP and we felt it was good value for money.

A very long way to go to be the 4* hotel they claim to be
We initially booked 2 double rooms in a different hotel run by 3K in Lisbon, but were booked out to this property due to problems with the AC. Nothing wrong there, the staff at 3K Madrid rang us in the morning and advised us of the problems they had, emailed me the details of the property they moved us to and assured me that the Barcelona Hotel is a 4* property as well. On check in at 3K Barcelona Hotel, the receptionist did not manage to make us feel welcome at all. She did not even bother to smile and greet us, and the reply we got to our greet was: "Oh, you are booked out from 3K Madrid!". She did not even bother to check the room types we have booked, but only asked for credit card details for extras. She gave us the key cards for the rooms and that was it. Only when we looked at the room allocations we realized the rooms were, to my memory, 5 floors away from each other. I have told the receptionist I am not happy with the room allocation and that we have made a request with the other property for double rooms on the same floor as we are two couples spending a longer holiday in Portugal together; that was not good for us as we do a lot of things together. The reply was:"That was only a request, that doesn't mean you will get it! We are full today and have no other rooms!". I have explained that it was not acceptable for us and that we should have been told form the beginning or when we were booked out and given other options. The reply was still in the same manner - no more rooms available, nothing we can do. Her colleague suggested two smoking rooms on the 10th floor. We are all smokers, so we did not mind that. I wonder why she did not bother from the beginning to ask the question and check what type of rooms we preferred? The receptionist changed the allocation and handed us the keys with a very sour look on her face. I had to ask for directions to the rooms, since it was the first time we stayed there (and the last) and the reply from the receptionist was: "Just take the lift!". I was also informed that the room doesn't have breakfast included in the rate and if we wanted we can have it for about 8 euros per person next morning, on the first floor. We were never asked if we needed help with luggage, given clear direction on how to get to our rooms or offered to be shown to the rooms, or even wished a pleasant stay. These are minimum standard procedures one would expect in a 4* property. Our next surprise was finding out that the double rooms that we have booked were actually not doubles, but twins, even if our booking was for two double rooms. Hint for reception: two couples check in: they might want double beds! Our room was almost half the size of our friends' room, even though we had the same type of room booked, and the beds size was considerably smaller. Our beds were closer to a kids size single. When our friends saw our room, they started laughing, and insinuated that I only got that as a payback form the receptionist for complaining about the initial allocation. I went back to reception to have the room changed again, as I did not find that acceptable at all. Our friends decided they could not be bothered talking to the girl in reception again, as she clearly didn't care much. Back in reception the girl that initially booked us in wasn't there. I explained to the other team member that it wasn't good enough and I did not go on holiday with my girlfriend to spend the night on different beds. Initially I was told the same story of a full hotel, but after seeking advice form a lady that I can only assume was either the duty manager or head housekeeper, miraculously there was a double room available that was not ready yet. I did not appreciate the fact that they used Portuguese in front of me when discussing my issue, when they could both speak English. I can only assume the words used were not the most complimenting towards me. But we finally got a room with a double bed! Not larger than the previous, but at least

Would recommend this hotel
We very much enjoyed the 3 nights we stayed at this hotel. The staff at reception were all very approachable and helpful. I asked for a room above the 3rd floor after reading on Trip Advisor that the 3rd floor is above the kitchens and can be noisy in the morning. We were given a non smoking room at front of building on the 4th floor instead, It was very quiet, the windows kept out alot of the noise from traffic, although next time Id ask for a room higher up just for a better view. The room was clean and a good size, the beds were comfortable, the furniture was standard but ok and we had free WIFI in our room. You need to ask for the password at reception. The bath was made for miniature people but fine for standing in to shower. Bathroom was also small but very clean. Didn't book breakfast so unable to comment on this. There is a food supermarket 5 mins walk away and a vegetarian restaurant 2 minutes away called Zen Parlour. The metro and airport bus stop are a few minutes walk. The Gulbenkian Museum is only 10 minutes walk and in my opinion, the most inspiring museum in Lisbon. You can use a computer with printer for free in the reception area and they have a private room for leaving suitcases.I would be happy to return to this hotel and its location during future trips to Lisbon.

No much help from the front desk
No one looked or greeted us at the front desk, I felt a bit scare to ask them any tourist information because I felt I was bothering them. The hotel room looked like life had stopped in the 90s, spilt shower and noisy from the near airport. The planes were flying so close that I could see the passengers. The room was clean.
