My European vacation
The front desk was extremely helpful and always polite. I even stopped by the bar and talked to the bartender about the original tile work and wood work. He was also extremely friendly. Although the hotel does not have all of the amenities of a larger hotel, the staff goes out of their way to let you know that they appreciate your patronage. Rooms are small but clean. Toiletries are included.I loved that the hotel had/kept a lot of old world charm. You could not find a better location as far as the proximity to everything you would need to see.

Best place to stay.
This is a beautiful old hotel very close to Dam Square. The staff are so friendly and most helpful. The room was large enough and very quiet. We were on the second floor room 214.The only little quibble was that the twin beds were put together,as I was with my daughter we were a little to close, but we still slept well enough. The food was tasty and having breakfast included in the rate made the cost very good value for money. We intend to return to stay in the hotel next time we we visit Amsterdam.I liked the "old world"ambience from the moment we entered the hotel. We stayed for two nights and really enjoyed our visit. The location is so good as backing on to Dam Square makes this the ideal hotel for a tourist to be based during a visit.

Cracking Hotel in the centre of Amsterdam
We had gone for our 40th anniversary not knowing what to expect since some of the reviews had mentioned that the rooms were poky. Ours (no 322) certainly wasn't. In fact it was quite comfortably spacious. There was little street noise in spite of it being at the front of the hotel, and on the Coronation weekend. The window was unusual as it was very low, with the top, arched part being bricked up with a mural on it. It was a large window shared with the room downstairs which had been split when a new floor was added. It had a wide carpeted sill. The room had all the usual amenities and really comfortable beds with memory foam mattress toppers. The wardrobes, one containing a safe, were roomy and accessible, although my wife, who is on the short side, could only use the lower shelves. In practice this was no problem as there was ample room for storage. Below is a small fridge, about the size of a coolbox, which was thankfully free of the minibar. In the bathroom the bath was deep and comfortable, the shower was good with loads of hot water. Word of caution though, be sure to adjust the temperature before you get in. If you are a collector of hotel lotions and potions you can forget it as they were on the stingy side. there was a line of four fancy soap boxes by the wash basin and all but one were empty. They were a bit stingy on the bottled items too. It wasn't a problem as we tend to bring our own things anyway. The towels were new and fluffy with spares to be had. The front of the hotel is accessed via a ramp over stairs and opens on to a fairly unimpressive reception with the Brasserie/restaurant on the right and a small lounge and bar on the left. The hotel staff could not have been more welcoming. Their English was excellent and they showed a good fluency with several other languages. In the Brasserie and the bar the same applied. There is a lot of character displayed in the older part of the hotel and you could do worse than eat in the restaurant. They have a ¿¿¿12.50 Beer and Burger weekend deal which is great . One of the best burgers I have had and a substantial meal to boot. Their breakfast deal is not so great though, for generic hotel buffet food we felt it was a bit overpriced at ¿¿¿19. Especially since just around the corner towards the canals there are a host of delightful cafes offering the same thing at half the price. The hotel is ideally situated, being just across from the Nieuwkerk and Dam Square with the Canals at the back. In short this is a really great place to stay and We will certainly return

Room small , but very convienent location.
I did not choose this hotel. I was a part of a group. If I was choosing a hotel on my own, I am not sure I would stay here again. Although the hotel's location was very convienent, I am not sure it was worth the price. My main "complaint" is the size. I do realize that this is Europe and I should not expect American size rooms. I shared a room with my friend and there wasn't much room for our belongings. We lived out of our suitcases. The hotel was clean and had interesting architecture. It was also nice to have access to a diverse breakfast buffet.

Great Location to Celebrate 30th Anniversary
For our 30th Anniversary, my wife and I decided on doing something special, and as we had never been to the Netherlands before, we easily agreed on Amsterdam. I didn't want a chain hotel, so after checking a lot of web sites, we came across the Die Port van Cleve. This is an older, very traditional looking hotel located in the Dam Square area, near the Royal Palace and the Nieuwe Kerk (New Church). The location is great, as the tram/light rail stopped right outside the door. We had the standard room, which to the typical American traveler would be considered quite small. There was an open closet area with some shelves, but only one small drawer in the room. An in-room safe was included, so we were able to hideaway our valuables. We didn't spend much time in the room, which helped.I thought the room was a little dark, but that might have been the design, which used a lot of wood and wood tones. Two twin beds were put together, so the bed was large enough. As a big plus, the bed was very comfortable, and both my wife and I slept well. We could hear noise outside the hotel (from the 4th floor), but it wasn't really distracting. The bathroom was slightly larger (compared to the hotel room). There was a shelf that went along most of the wall, so we had reasonable storage space. The tub was raised off the floor, so while getting in was ok, getting out was a little tricky. The staff all spoke good English, and did a fine job in responding to requests. Our room rate included a full breakfast (which was nice plus, as we had only been promised a continental breakfast). The food was good, but not spectacular. If we had to pay the regular price (19.5 Euros, around $25), I would have been disappointed. We did have drinks one night in the attached bar, which was completely full. Prices were a little high, but seemed normal for the area.Overall, we were pretty happy, and I would definitely consider returning here if we come back to Amsterdam in the future.
