Overall great service and excellent experience
My husband and I really enjoyed this hotel. We are Platinum Elite members, and always try to stay with the Marriott family hotels. The Navigators at this hotel were so friendly and helpful. We were so pleased every time that we asked them for dinner recommendations, directions or an umbrella. Lourence is an asset for this hotel - he was so professional and helpful. It's near Central station, many Metro stops, Dam plaza and lots of restaurents. We were able to walk to the other side of the center of town (Van Gough museum) in 30 minutes. The concierge lounge was well appointed and large. The beds were so comfy! Our only complaint was the noise level from the street. We were on the 3rd floor, facing the St. Nicholas Hotel/Renaissance Conference Center. The street noise was so loud that we thought that the window was actually broken. If we weren't so jetlagged the first night and hadn't passed out then we would have switched rooms. BTW - we live in the city and near a main road, so we are used to noise. The noise level was inexcusable!! The interesting thing is that other Marriott Hotels that we've stayed in automatically put us in a quiet room realizing that we are Elite members and staying 5 nights!! This Renaissance didn't take any of that into consideration. Unfortunately, we were here during a big convention and the Europe football cup so we couldn't move. The noise was our only complaint - but a big one! We had breakfast in the hotel on sunday morning because the lounge was closed. Real nice buffet. They need to figure out a better place to order omelettes because the current logistics don't work. However, the man making the omelettes was very efficient. we also had dinner at Savinis (italian restaurant right down the street), Seasons (a short walk from the hotel) and Cafe Loetje (30 minute walk) which I would highly recommend all 3. The Cafe Loetje is a steak house that is chaotic and fun!! Quite an experience, excellent value and a good steak. Check it out on Yelp - that's how we found it and the description was accurate! I'm glad that we were able to experience it.

Cant hide its age..
I can only report on the room I had. Small is the word... no room to walk at end of bed! Curtains didn't block out lights and street outside was noisy. Wardrobe light was stuck on. Sink cracked... five star? Well not here. 20 euros for internet access.

Disappointing
Was really looking forward to my stay here which is billed as one of the nicest hotels in Europe. Problems began with check-in. Had requested early check in if possible when reserving months before, but in fact room was not ready until 4 pm which made for a disjointed day as i was told room was almost ready a few times and kept returning to hotel. By the time i finally got into the room i was too exhausted from walking around the city for 5 hours after a trans Atlantic flight to do much more than eat or sleep. (Was there on business and had planned to do some work that day.) The room itself was large but comparable to a fairly standard moderately priced room in North America -- much less than i had hoped for at 240 euros a night! Amenities were very uninspired and i ended up purchasing hair conditioner to use while there but what was supplied was simply not very good. Lounge offered minimal assortment of breads and cheeses at 5:30 each evening plus two fried appetizers. Still water was actually removed from lounge each day except during appetizer times making access to drinks quite limited. Breakfast on Sunday in restaurant was excellent, but fairly standard offerings in lounge on other days (e.g. powdered scrambled eggs) making surcharge for lounge a poor value. Nice espresso machine available. Staff would accomodate requests (converter for room, etc) but were not particularly friendly. The exception was the mustachioed concierge who was quite helpful. I was Not inspired to consider returning on future visits.

Standard 5 stars, but nothing special
The hotel's location is almost perfect, rooms are clean and comfortable, check-in process went smooth, club lounge is very comfortable (but lacks electric sockets). The request for the room on the upper floors was met. However, there are details that really spoil the impression: noone helped us with the luggage, water pressure and temperature in a shower are unpredictable, breakfast system is rather odd. The hostess gave us a piece of paper with types of breakfast options and a pen and didn't explain anything. Given that the full breakfast was already included in a room rate, the goal of this paper was not clear. When we asked for a fresh juice for a child at the breakfast, the waiter told us that only bottled juice is available. And when we asked guest relations why there is no fresh juice on the breakfast, they stated that the juice they have is "99% fresh". WTF? How this was calculated? The juice could be either freshly squeezed or not. The absence of the juice is not a big deal, but I hate when people are trying to fool me, saying that black is white. If you don't have something, just say this.

Nice hotel, but very small rooms and unfriendly reception
The location of the hotel is great. Next to the central station and next to one of the channels. It is also up to date. Key reason why i would not go back anymore is the very small sized rooms (particularly when you are two). The walls are also not very thick so you could get worken up by people talking or doors (slamming) closing. A second reason is the staff at the reception. First of all, the day before my arrival i called the hotel that I was arriving early and would like to check in. They mentioned that they could not guarantee a room, which is obviously fine, but you're still hoping to that in such a large sized hotel there is a room already available. When I checked in the receptionist told me that it was not possible, but that she will call me when a room was ready. So i thought not ideal, but maybe it will only take one hour. Then my colleague checked in after me and he immediately got s room!!!! 2 minutes after me! And he didn't even call! Anyway, not to make my review to long, the receptionist didn't call me. So at 15:00 I checked in and then she gave me a room next to the cleaning storage (avoid room 133). This room enables you to hear slamming doors of the cleaning department and nice long discussions in the morning and doesn't allow you to sleep in. Oh and she also never explained me about any of the facilities or even where the lift is! Receptionist's name started with a D.Check out was a similarly crappy excersise where it took them for ever to have my invoice properly set up and again nobody asked anything about my stay. Well now you know! One last thing, as one of the few hotels in amsterdam this hotel charges for wifi and also at a ridiculous rate (20 euros a day!).So to sum up, nice and modern hotel, too small rooms, unfriendly & unhelpful recption and expensive wifi. No need to come back.
