Centrally Located Hotel
The location is the best thing about this hotel. Front desk staff is helpful and the bed was comfortable. There were issues with housekeeping. Some days they did not vacuum my room. Scotland has a reputation for excellent drinking water. In the bathroom above the sink there is a sign alerting the guests that the water was not safe for drinking. Housekeepers on most days would leave 2 bottles of drinking water.

Falls short on pretty much everything
Saw the reviews and hoped they were harsh......butHotel is having work done to renovate. Reception was friendly enough. Room had been refurbished (307) and looked good....quite modern. Very small - just over a double bed wide. Bathroom ok at first glance but shower had hairs in, loo too close to sink to sit on comfortably ( sorry about the image!)Free shower gel etc was good and there's a kettle and tea bags. Tv good. Light switch not working and 2 bulbs out on main light.Bar was closed at 11pm but friendly staff member served us anyway :-)Room was quietBreakfast was a joke....under staffed.....helped myself to cereal and ordered full breakfast. Room had threadbare carpets and itv on fairly loudly and basically smelled like old folks home.Got toast and tea after 5 mins but 15 mins after that there were still people who had ordered before me waiting for food. Didn't fancy the debate with staff (one chap took them on but got nowhere) so got up and left. Corridors smell of smoke- fresh smoke (cigarette)Checked out straight away.....told reception I had breakfast ( they prob wouldn't have known) and paid for continental out of good faith.Great location- right opposite station and on princess st......Overall...for tourists..avoid this hotel until they sort out foodOk for business when you're in the room for 6 hours and have had a few beers

Could have been better
As a rule, the staff were very good and tried to make us as comfortable as possible. Being limited physically, there were no options as to Handicapped Access rooms. This posed problems with bathing. We were given a room with a step in shower on our second night, this along with a folding metal chair made taking a shower a bit easier. One thing my wife and I noticed was, no soap dish/tray on the shower wall. I am not a juggler and had to place soap or shampoo on the floor of the shower and reach for each as needed. This situation could be corrected with a tube of Silicone adhesive and a flat backed soap dish. The renovations that are on going created some other issues that will not be a problem once complete. The Housekeeping staff were not as dedicated as they could have been. We stayed in the same room for 6 nights and the carpet was not cleaned once in that time frame. Our coffee service was left dirty 3 of the 6 nights and we had to go to the desk for coffee packets usually each day. We left the empty tissue box on a bed 2 days in a row and finally went to the desk for a replacement. The location is wonderful, close to many sights and attractions. I do not feel the room cost was a good value with all of the shortcomings of a property under renovation. Would consider returning once most of the renovations are complete.Michael EllisMilwaukee, WI USA

More like 1*
A friend and I stayed here for a couple or nights to see Derren Brown at the playhouse. We chose here because of the great location. However that's where the good points stop. On trying to locate our room there were horrible 70s wooden doors that were very heavy to open and lots of unnecessary steps and hills. On finding out room we realised there were 3 beds in it, and it wasn't the refurbished room wed asked for.The room itself was extremely dated, and looked as if nothing it it had been updated since the 70s. The window latches were broken so we had a draft in our room, and even with the windows pushed shut you can hear everything that's happening outside. The walls and doors are thin and we could hear sneezing in the room next door. The Internet cut out if you sat in a certain place and the bathroom was very basic. However, I can't fault the cleanliness. We went for breakfast on our first morning which was an in edible full English. The mushrooms were dripping in fat and the sausages and hash browns tasted artificial. Needless to say, we skipped breakfast the next morning. If you don't particularly mind where you stay and just want somewhere to sleep close to the train station then this will do you. But personally I don't think the price justifies the condition of the hotel nor the star it's been given.
