Not what we remembered...
When we last stayed at the Copthorne in 1995 it was a nice modern hotel. That's what we thought we'd booked ourselves into for a weekend break this month. Clearly though not much has been spent on it since then because the decor was very dated and overall the hotel felt very tatty and grubby. Staff were friendly and helpful but the room was hot with no a/c (just a fan blowing room temp air), the bed and pillows were hard and unpleasant, the tv was ancient and the breakfast was very unappealing. The location is still good though and the view of the Tyne was nice. Sadly that won't be enough to entice us back, the competition from Malmaison, HdV, Hilton et al is far too strong.

NEEDS A BIT OF A REFURB
We stayed at the Copthorne on 15/6/13,very nice entrance/reception area,we arrived at approx 12noon and the hotel let us book in approx 2 hrs early, which was good,we got to our room 311 and when you open the door ,and walk in,two things hit you,the view of the tyne, and the HEAT in the room, massive window that looks over the tyne, but only 2 little windows that opened to let any air in,the air con didn't make any difference to the temp, not a very good nights sleep!I think maybe a bit overpriced and needs some refurb work done around the hotel, but the location is great, and the view from our greenhouse! was fantastic. Not sure if I would return!?

Perfect place for a special party
We rented a room in the hotel to hold out own graduation ball. We had such an amazing night. We had access to a small bar and our own room with a in house dj. The hotel provided us with a 2course meal including a chicken dinner followed by sticky toffee pudding and a bottle of any wine. The food was tasty and the service was 'spot on'. The waiters would bring drinks to the tablesand we cpuke just pay there and then. The room had a pituresque view of the river at night. This was a perfect place to celebrate something special and I would reccommend it for any occasion.

Brilliant
Read many reviews prior to staying at the hotel but thought i would just wait & see for myself!! Cannot fault the hotel one bit,yes i can appreciate the comments regarding it being dated etc but as the management have said that is something that is being looked at with a plan for refurbishment ongoing! From checking in the young woman was very helpful with any questions we had we were given a free upgrade to a better room on the 5th floor. The room was well comfortable,as for the view of the river tyne & its bridges i can only describe as stunning!!! We opted for breakfast in bed the following morning the food was superb with first class customer service from the woman who brung us our food! If you are thinking of staying at this hotel try and not let the negative reviews put you off!!! Excellent hotel,First class staff, stunning location

Disappointed by service!!
So I stayed at this hotel for a Hen party and from the moment we checked in we didn't feel welcomed at all.Check in was terrible! We arrived all together about 3pm and were greeted by a rude and abrupt little female receptionist. There were no guests other than us to check in at this stage. She advised us our rooms weren't ready on the same floor so we would have to be split....instead she could have asked us if we wanted to wait, we wouldn't have minded. 1st floor and 3rd floor our party was split to!We were all expected to pay ¿¿100 bond on check in...This is a hotel not a flat and our accommodation was paid in full, we are all mature females and were discriminated like a bunch hooligans. (None of the leisure guests have to pay this). The accommodation wasn¿¿¿t that great either, granted the fact if we damaged our room we would lose ~¿¿600 as per the little piece of self written documentation we had to sign.I stayed in a twin room and was greeted by a lovely CRT TV ¿¿¿ didn¿¿¿t think 4 star hotels even had these any more, I inspected the room to see if anything was damaged before we relaxed and noticed above the trouser press was a lovely rip/burn or whatever on the wall! The d¿¿cor was dated with very odd pictures of urns on the wall ¿¿¿ very disturbing, and the lamp on the far side was broken. We did have a balcony with a lovely view of the river ¿¿¿ and a lubricant factory! The downside to the balcony is next door would find it quite easy to just climb into our room, slightly unsecure especially if you¿¿¿re a lone traveller. We were on a 2 night stay and after a late night from our meal we all needed a good nights sleep for our day out on the Saturday, the pillows were incredibly hard and beds far too close together.I was rudely awoken by housekeeping at 8am, she knocked very loud and shouted housekeeping and didn¿¿¿t even pause before walking in, god help anyone who showered that early. This is just not acceptable on a stay at 8am!!!!! After that I put the do not disturb sign on the door to prevent a repeat performance.Breakfast ¿¿¿ the tall slim dark haired waitress was very friendly and welcoming.Make sure you ask for milk with your hot drinks as it¿¿¿s mostly forgotten. The food wasn¿¿¿t too bad really, could have been warmer but in the area its cold in the corner this is situated. My tip would be put the toaster at the end of the food station and not on the opposite side of the room. The receptionist on Saturday was very helpful organising our taxis etc for the day and the evening.Leisure facilities ¿¿¿ I personally didn¿¿¿t use these but some of the party did, they all seemed up to scratch however the Jacuzzi was out of order which was a disappointment.Check out ¿¿¿ a lot faster and simpler then check in but nothing special.I love Newcastle and will be visiting again but I will avoid this hotel at all costs.
