Wait until after Renovations
My review is based on the fact that we were not advised when we booked this property that it was under renovation as others have said. I think this was wrong of the hotel and gave us quite a shock when we were shuttled through a narrow hallway to a tiny front desk that looked like the back of a bookie operation or something. Also, only two elevators are working and they are slow and small. People were getting into arguments (particularly this one porcine looking women who refused to let people on lest she be crowded on the elevator). The rooms are all different sizes. The one I had was very small and the bathroom counter/sink looked like something you'd find in either a prison or a chemistry lab. Was cold and uninviting. I'm sure others look upon it as different and interesting. It wasn't for me. The furniture resembled something you'd find in a kindergarten classroom. Luckily we didn't have a room facing the alley, that would've just made things worse but I suppose it comes with the territory in NYC as do some boutique hotels in Upper West Side where space is at a premium -- I get that. You trade a great location (which this has) and nice staff against these negatives....but there were just too many negatives for me. On the plus side there was that great location, a very nice Italian restaurant that's open for breakfast too, on the ground floor, good TV, a comfy bed, good A/C with a fan that runs constantly that makes falling and staying asleep easy for me. When the lobby is finished and all the elevators are back in service (which also might be when the building across the street that's under construction will also be finished) I would probably give this hotel another try despite the horrible room decor. For now though only two stars.

Disappointing stay at On The Avenue
I have stayed at On the Avenue for the past 7 years, 2-3x¿¿¿s a year and have, in the past, loved this hotel. Unfortunately I cannot say that I am that happy about my resent stay for 4 days at the end of May. First the lobby is under construction ¿¿¿ so there is no lobby ¿¿¿ which is not mentioned on their website, but that is not my complaint though I do think it is worth mentioning. The attitude of the front desk and the management was one of¿¿¿ I really don¿¿¿t care that you are here¿¿¿ and extremely rude. First, I had a room upgrade coupon that the hotel sent me. Actually I had two, last time I was there; there were no upgraded rooms available. The manager at that time said she would note it for my next stay which was already reserved for May, since then I received another coupon from the hotel for an upgrade. When I showed this to the front desk she told me I already was upgraded to a deluxe room. This was the room that I paid for - it was not an upgrade. At that she said that they don¿¿¿t do upgrades past that room! Nothing like that is mentioned by the way on the upgrade coupon sent to me. I asked her for free internet in my room and her reply was there is free internet in the lobby. At which point I said ¿¿¿ but you don¿¿¿t have a lobby. She told me I had to talk to a manager. When the manager finally arrived and I stated my concerns (about the attitude etc.) he could not care less ¿¿¿ but I finally did persuade him for internet in my room. The next day was raining ¿¿¿ there are no umbrellas in the room ¿¿¿ and when I asked for one at the front desk they told me they were out. What ¿¿¿ a hotel that doesn't have enough umbrellas for their rooms! This is not a discount hotel ¿¿¿although it appears to act like one at this time. Last bit of information I will mention is about the rooms that were renovated. The beds are wonderful, the best I have slept in at a hotel, and I just stayed at the Kimpton Palomar in Washington and Sofitel in Philadelphia (where they actually seem to care about their guests) however the rest of the room looks like it was done by IKEA¿¿¿s children¿¿¿s areaMy assumption regarding this hotel is that management changed and unfortunately not for the better.

Great Upper Westside Hotel
Spent 3 nights here over Memorial Day weekend. I had booked several months earlier and I kept checking prices and they kept dropping. I contacted the hotel and they adjusted the rate for me saving me a sizeable amount. We were in a superior room on the 6th floor overlooking 77th. The window was very small but let in enough light. As we were there on a holiday weekend, the construction across the street was nonexistent. The room was not huge, but for the price in NYC it was more than adequate. A small bedside stand was on each side of the king sized bed. The bed was very comfortable and was a bit taller than my own, but not as high as some hotel beds I've experienced the last few years. The bathroom was fine. I didn't like that the stainless sink always seemed damp. The shower/tub worked well. There was plenty of room beside and below the sink for storage of makeup bag and shaving kit. The only issue we had with the room was sound from the neighbors next door through the connecting door. Fortunately we were out most of the time. You could hear entire conversations as if in the same room. The patio on the 16th floor was great on a spring evening. Met interesting people there. In fact, everyone we encountered, staff or guests, were friendly and outgoing. You had time to have a short conversation waiting on the elevators. As has been mentioned, there are only 2 working at the moment and are on the slow side. Knowing this going in it just didn't bother me.We had one dinner at Serafina. I was pleased with the quality. They really pack people in close together in the dining room. We loved the UWS and will certainly want to return to this hotel again. Love the area and the location of this hotel. We were in NYC to attend a concert at The Beacon Theatre only a couple of blocks walk. When the construction is complete it should be a really good hotel.

Grossly Disappointing; rude staff; terrible security; no notice of very disruptive renovations; no minibar or room serv
This was one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed at in New York. Ongoing renovations were very disruptive leaving zero lobby or gathering space other than a roof terrace which was useless during 24 hours of rain. And there was no courtesy of notifying guests in advance. The entrance looked like a back alley access and there was no security until midnight. there were only two working elevators that were very slow and shared with housekeeping staff. The front desk staff were generally rude and snarky. I was charged for 3 nights parking and had a car there only for two nights. It took too long to remove the charge. No minibar or room service. The bathroom was mediocre and the sink reminded me of the aluminum trough at girlscout camp. Too many problems and issues, and no attempt by staff to make amends or offer some form of compensation. On the Ave is not a hotel worthy of $400 plus per night before taxes!!!

Great Place to Be...
I have been staying at On the Ave every time I come to NY for years. The staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. The hotel is clean, chic and so conveniently located. The guest rooms have been renovated and are very nice.Right now the hotel is undergoing a major renovation of its lobby. This has resulted in some inconvenience during the construction (e.g., there are only two elevators for guest use). These experiences do not detract from the overall quality of the hotel. As the say, "Temporary inconvenience, permanent improvement".I look forward to staying at On the Ave again...and can't wait to see the new lobby!
