Pros and Cons
We recently stayed here for three nights. The pros - location, staff, price, ample free parking, breakfast included in room rate. The cons - small room size, small "double" beds, lack of certain amenities. All of the staff that we encountered at this hotel were simply great. The price is reasonable and includes continental breakfast. The breakfast each morning included scrambled eggs, bacon & sausage, either potatoes or biscuits & gravy, make-your-own waffles, fruit, bagels or bread for toasting, a few different cold cereals, instant oatmeal, juice, coffee, tea. It was not an upscale breakfast. It was average, but adequate. The hotel is located near all of the historical sites that we wanted to visit - the Dana-Thomas House, the Capitol Bldg, and all of the Lincoln sites. Nothing was more than 0.7 miles from the hotel, all within an easy walk. The lone exception was Lincoln's tomb, which was a short drive. The hotel dates to the 1960's. It has been renovated, but the rooms are small. The first room that we had was supposed to be two double beds. I made the reservation online, and that was pretty much all that was available. I noted that we would prefer to have a room with only one bed. They were apparently fully booked, and we were given a room with two beds, but I'm pretty certain that the two beds in our room were NOT standard double/full size beds. Each bed seemed only slightly wider than a twin. If I had to guess, I'd say that each was a 3/4 size bed. We complained and were moved the following day into a room with a single, queen bed. They were very good about accommodating us, and the housekeeping staff even moved our belongings for us while we were out touring the sites the following day. We didn't expect that. I must say that the beds were very comfortable. We found the sliding door that opens/closes the closet/bathroom to be annoying. If someone wants to be getting something in/out of the closet, that means that nobody can enter or exit the bathroom at the same time. I understand they've done the best they can with the space limitations of what was a standard size room when the building was built, but still... Both rooms we had offered a conventional vs. a flat screen TV, and there weren't a huge number of stations to choose from. There is no restaurant on the premises. There is also no pool, although they do have a fitness room in the basement level. Still, all things considered, for the price and location, this was a worthwhile stay.

Good location and nice facility
Location is very convenient to historic sites. Clean, attractive facility with good off street parking. Hot breakfast is served on real plates instead of styrofoam. Reasonably priced. Don't miss a tour of the state Capitol just a block away.

The State House Inn, Springfield, Ill.
My wife and I stayed at the State House Inn May 2-3, 2013, when we went to Springfield to visit the Lincoln museum. Everything about the hotel was satisfactory for our purpose. When traveling, we want cleanliness, comfort and convenience, not luxury and multiple services. The room and bathroom were ample and clean, and the bed comfortable. Bathrobes were a nice, unexpected extra. The hotel was within walking distance, for us, of the museum and all the historic sites in town, as well as restaurants. Newspaper articles on a wall reported on the hotel's complete, multi-million dollar renovation in the 1960s. The furniture came, they said, from Carson Pirie Scott in Chicago. The one negative point I'd make is that the decor does not appear to have been updated since then. (Nothing looked worn, however.) The look throughout is 60's modern, bringing back memories of our establishing our household years ago. But when asleep, who cares about decor? And those memories are pleasant.

Great Stay!
Really enjoyed our time in Springfield and the State Inn was conveniently located to all we wanted to see and priced just right - rooms were older but very clean and the breakfast was great - thanks!!

My room could have used some more room
I don't want my title to scare people away from this establishment. This is a good Hotel. If you are transacting business with the State of Illinois you should stay here. All of the major state offices are right across the street as well as the state capitol building. If you are taking Amtrak you are only about three blocks from this hotel. They have an outstanding breakfast. The rooms have everthing you would ever need in a hotel room. There were only two problems I had with this hotel. Granted, since I was traveling alone, these were really not issues for me. However, if a family of four were to stay in the room is was in, these two things might be a problem. First, the bathroom door was a large sliding door which covered the closet when it was open. A novel idea at that. However, the door did not have any kind of lock on it. This was not an issue for me, but for a family of four a lock on the door is important. The other problem was the lack of floor space. If you look at the photos accompanying this review, shots numbered 4, 18, 36 and 37 were probably taken in a room like the one I stayed in. By the time you put in two queensized beds, a chair, a floor lamp and a large combination chest of drawers and desk, which also serves as a TV stand, it just does not leave any room for much else. I might suggest that the management remove the furniture other than the beds and do the following. Replace the current TV with a wall mounted flat screen. Replace the floor lamp with a hanging lamp. Get rid of the the combination desk and chest of drawers. In its place, put some drawers in the closet and put a smaller desk in the corner by the window. These changes would improve the room considrably. In conclusion, if you are traveling on your own, my room was fine. If you are traveling with a family, you might want to consider a different room. Overall, the palce is a good hotel.
