Little gem of a hotel in SoHo
We stayed in this hotel because it was close to our daughter's apartment and it had a pretty good rating and the price was good. We were pleased with our choice. The rooms are not big, but we just needed a place to sleep that was in this neighborhood. There are plenty of attractions nearby and a subway stop on the F line is right across the street (2nd Ave stop). The room was very clean and well appointed... comfortable bed, small fridge, microwave, and even a free bottled water! The bathroom had granite counter tops and shower walls... very pretty. There was even a soap and shampoo dispenser mounted on the shower wall... and a nice white bathrobe! The front desk people were all very friendly and professional... Helped us arrange for a car to the airport. There is a Whole Foods store just down the street, so it's convenient if you want to go grab breakfast or lunch. It rained the day we left so we hung out at Whole Foods (comfortable chairs, clean bathrooms and good food) while we were waiting for our car to the airport. We would stay here again.

Tailor Made for Us!
It's hard to answer a question about value when talking about any NYC hotel because it's all relative... anywhere is going to likely be more costly than what you're used to paying. Where the purveyors of Soho Gem are smart is by pouring on the fantastic service and lovely charm. And isn't that the secret to success? We stayed here for 5 glorious nights and loved every minute of it. Usually our hotel is just the place we sleep, but I was 6 months pregnant and needed bouts of rest and relaxation in between the bursts of energy. So, having Whole Foods across the street and a fridge in the room was GREAT.The first night, we were in a room I will generously describe as "bijou" (the smallest jewel at the Gem, I'm sure). Didn't so much mind the size, but it was hot out and the A/C would only stay on for 20 min at a time so I did not sleep. I brought it to the attention of the sweetheart at the front desk (and told him about my "condition" and he called in the hotel manager who upgraded us to a HUGE room, which was glorious. The desk staff is extremely kind, friendly and helpful. The neighborhood is our perfect vision of NYC. Little Italy and Chinatown are both just steps away. Sugar (one block away) has the best, freshest food for all 3 meals, plus fantastic baking and lattes. Two Boots pizza was a great deal, a few blocks away. The burger place next door is delicious. And we grabbed a Knish from next door for breakfast a few times. For us the Lower East Side felt like quintessential old NY. Tenament Museum, Feast of San Genarro, Katz Deli - it was all fantastic!Then, to drag you back into this decade, Broadway is only 5 blocks away where you can shoe shop until 11:00pm! The rest of the City is all easily within reach as the 2nd Ave. subway station is right across the street.One of the best trips of my life and the Soho Gem was a big part of it!

Cozy, but pricey
Picked this hotel solely on location for a family event nearby. Did not get any sort of bargain, thought it overpriced for the small space and noisy street location. However, the bed was comfy and the desk staff helpful and friendly. But the base of the queen bed was too big and we hit our shins too many times for a one night stay. Also, the odor in the halls and elevator was "off".Only could recommend if you get a deal, which in my opinion should be no more than $200.

Comfortable, Accommodating, Affordable
Don't let the modest exterior put you off. The Gem Hotel SoHo is a bargain that does not sacrifice comfort or convenience. We four ladies visiting NYC and the Metropolitan Opera booked two double rooms and found everything we needed at a very reasonable price. The rooms were bright and cheerful and spotlessly clean and not overly small. The beds were very good and well made with inviting linens. The bath offered all the usual amenities (including robes) and plenty of thick towels. The staff from the general manager to the room attendants were friendly, cordial, and more than willing to help. In particular, the desk staff (three shifts/three different people) made us feel welcomed, offering suggestions and retrieving online information for us. We'll be back!
